2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Nic Scourton
Nic Scourton (DE – Texas A&M)
6-foot-4 | 285 Pounds
Background
Nic Scourton is a Texas native and four-star recruit who originally attended Purdue, where he spent the first two years of his collegiate career. Rotated in fairly heavily (265 snaps) as a freshman, finishing with 22-2.0-2.0. He then took over a starting role and had a highly productive sophomore campaign, posting 50-15.0-10.0 over 701 snaps. Transferred to Texas A&M and has been enjoying another strong season (37-14.0-5.0 as of the time of writing.)
Positives
Very big, long-limbed EDGE defender with two highly productive seasons under his belt, spread across two different programs. High-intensity player with very good play strength. Moves very well for his size. Texas A&M has Scourton play out of a two-point stance relatively frequently; kind of a strongside elephant linebacker in the team’s odd base front. Able to two-gap effectively in the run game, locking out blockers and locating the football effectively. Contact balance is very good. Keeps his shoulders square and shows discipline on the back side or when working as the read man.
Scourton shows good motor in pursuit and will pursue across the formation and downfield if needed. His first step and reaction times are very good, showing good explosiveness once the ball is snapped. Overwhelming bull-rusher with a nice combination of active feet, intensity and natural power to generate push and collapse the pocket. Mixes up his approach a bit to soften up blockers for his power. Works in spins and other counters when his initial move is unsuccessful. Closes well when he finds a lane to the passer. Looks fast spot-dropping into coverage, and was asked to do that relatively often.
Negatives
The flip side of his intensity is an occasional lack of discipline; shows some minor tendencies to play out over his feet. Can have some weight distribution issues and lets his pad level get a bit high at times. Would like to see more consistent knee-bend. A bit of a linear mover who doesn’t have the smoothest change-of-direction skills.
Scourton can get too far upfield with his rushes, allowing the quarterback to climb the pocket and get out of danger. Somewhat reliant on his bull rush and doesn’t have as much suddenness to his other moves.
Summary
A force of nature who brings it on a snap-to-snap basis in terms of intensity and toughness, combining an explosive first step with heavy hands and a nonstop motor. While Scourton has the power you’d expect from a bigger EDGE defender, he is also significantly more athletic than his size would suggest, with impressive speed and range in pursuit and the ability to spot-drop effectively.
While his aggressiveness can sometimes lead to issues with balance, it looks like he should be able to step right in and contribute at the next level, with some room for further growth as he improves his discipline and continues developing his repertoire of rush moves.
Projection: Round 1
