NHL Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Advice (Week 13)

(Rostership percentages courtesy of ESPN)

Teuvo Teravainen (F – CHI) | 32.1% Rostered

Chicago’s Teuvo Teravainen has some upside from a fantasy perspective. The Blackhawks are 29th in goals scored this year (92), but Teravainen has contributed to 23 of those 92 tallies, which means he’s helped account for 25% of the team’s goals. He’s logged seven goals and 16 assists this year.

Teravainen has seen his scoring production skyrocket over the last two weeks. He’s on fire right now, logging 10 points (one goal, nine assists) over his last six games. I won’t try to convince you that Teravainen is going to drag this Chicago offense out of the bottom ranks of the league, but I do believe the winger will continue to put up fantasy-worthy points and shots on goal (SOG) this season. He could be worth a look if you need some depth scoring.

Dmitri Voronkov (F – CBJ) | 12.6% Rostered

The Blue Jackets have regressed to the mid-to-bottom part of the Metropolitan Division, but it certainly hasn’t been due to a lack of offense. Columbus is ninth in scoring this year, averaging 3.3 goals per game.

I love adding Dmitri Voronkov to a fantasy roster. It’s not every day we get an opportunity to add a top-line winger and a first-unit power-play forward on a top-10 offense in the league. Voronkov is up to 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in just 28 games played this year. Ten (five goals, five assists) of those points have come over the last seven games. Voronkov plays alongside Sean Monahan and Kirill Marchenko on the top line. I only see upside for him from here. This is a great buy-low spot on the Russian-born winger.

David Savard (D – MTL) | 7% Rostered

Montreal’s David Savard isn’t a sexy pick as a defenseman. But, they don’t ask how you get your fantasy points, they just ask how many. Savard only has nine points this year (one goal, eight assists), but he has made his contributions on the defensive end of the ice. The 34-year-old is eighth in the NHL in blocked shots (86) and seventh in blocked shots per game (2.6).

If you’re in a league that rewards players stepping in front of pucks, Savard should be worth a look. He’s logging 18:44 time on ice per game and he’s anchoring a Montreal defense constantly under siege.

Mackenzie Blackwood (G – COL) | 46.6% Rostered

The Mackenzie Blackwood era in Denver is off to a roaring start. In five outings with his new club, Blackwood is 4-1-0 with a 1.82 GAA and .940 SV%. Blackwood’s not one of those guys who’s going to steal the show. However, when he’s surrounded by a competent team, he’s going to be serviceable.

I think it’s time to buy stock in Blackwood, especially considering he’s on a top-tier offensive team that can win higher-scoring games in case he has a bad night. Aside from shutouts, wins are the most critical goaltending metric. Blackwood should pile up the wins now that he’s on a contending team. I think he’s a solid long-term option if you need a goaltending boost.
