Fantasy Basketball Trade Advice: Cam Thomas, Jonathan Kuminga, Malik Monk

Fantasy Basketball Trade Advice: Cam Thomas, Jonathan Kuminga, Malik Monk

With the conclusion of the NBA Cup in Las Vegas, the NBA schedule has returned to normal. Thursday’s 13-game slate marks the first time there have been double-digit games in a day since December 8th.

More games mean more fantasy points, which give us better insight into the trade market. It’s Week 8 of trade advice, let’s get started.

Fantasy Basketball Trade Advice (Week 8)

Trade For

Cam Thomas (SF, SG – BKN)

There hasn’t been and won’t be a better time to buy Cam Thomas than right now. With Dennis Schroder headed to Golden State, Thomas is the undisputed guy in Brooklyn.

The only catch is Thomas’ hamstring injury, which he suffered on November 25th. The LSU product has yet to be cleared for contact, per USA Today. The report — roughly — puts him on track to return within the original three-to-four-week timetable.

Thomas ranks 15th in the NBA in scoring and may benefit from the dismantling of the Nets roster closer to the trade deadline.

Trade Away

Jonathan Kuminga (PF, SF – GSW)

Jonathan Kuminga was part of the first trade advice article of the year as a “trade for” candidate. The fourth-year forward is now a “trade away” option for two primary reasons.

For starters, Kuminga has taken a step back. His candidacy for the Most Improved Player Award was a talking point in November’s article, but he’s regressed from last season.

Second, and this is what puts you on a deadline with Kuminga, Dennis Schroder is inbound. Funny enough, Schroder was a “trade away” in that same trade advice piece because he started the year on a tear. The veteran guard was a prime regression candidate… but he never regressed.

Schroder carried a 23.1% usage rate and averaged 14.1 field-goal attempts per game in Brooklyn. Those figures directly impact Kuminga’s on-ball playing style for the worse.

Players to Trade Him For Who Are Ranked Lower: Christian Braun (G – DEN), Jeremy Sochan (F – SAS)

Trade For

Malik Monk (SG, SF – SAC)

The fact Malik Monk is rostered in 64% of ESPN and Yahoo! leagues is criminal. Even with DeMar DeRozan on the roster, Monk is having his best season ever.

From a fantasy perspective, Monk has the ideal blend of a high ceiling and a high floor. His ceiling is propped up by a respectable five assists and 3.6 rebounds per game. Monk’s floor is secure thanks to Sacramento’s incredibly short rotation.

Kings coach Mike Brown’s lineups have given Monk career-highs in minutes (29), field-goal attempts (12.7) and points (16.2).

Players to Trade Him For Who Are Ranked Higher: D’Angelo Russell (G – LAL), Tobias Harris (F – DET)

Trade Away

Naz Reid (PF, C – MIN)

In what was supposed to be Naz Reid’s breakout season, it has instead been a disappointing year six. Reid is averaging 12.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.8 blocks and 0.8 steals per game on 45.1/35/87.5 shooting splits.

His 24.56 fantasy points (Yahoo! default scoring) per game are in the neighborhood of players like Jabari Smith Jr., Scotty Pippen Jr., Royce O’Neale and Luguentz Dort. Reid is rostered in 81% of Yahoo! Leagues.

Use Reid’s big name to trade for a lesser-known, more productive player.

Players to Trade Him For Who Are Ranked Lower: Deni Avdija (F – POR), Santi Aldama (F – MEM)
