NBA DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer

NBA DFS Core Plays

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (PG – OKC)

  • DraftKings: $10,700
  • FanDuel: $10,800

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to produce at a high level. He posted a career-high 45 points with nine assists, five steals, four three-pointers, three boards and two blocked shots Monday against the Los Angeles Clippers. He went for 29 points with five boards and five dimes while swatting two shots in Wednesday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans.

In November, Gilgeous-Alexander has been good for a solid 28.9 points per game (PPG), 6.5 assists per game (APG), 4.5 rebounds per game (RPG), 1.4 steals per game (SPG), 1.0 blocks per game (BPG) and a healthy 54.1% field-goal percentage with 1.5 three-pointers per contest. You always get your money’s worth with the Thunder superstar.

Trae Young (PG – ATL)

  • DraftKings: $9,900
  • FanDuel: $9,400

If you want to devote a little less lettuce to the point guard spot, Trae Young has a very favorable matchup against the leaky defense of the Washington Wizards in an NBA Cup tournament game. He has had an amazing November and enters play with three consecutive double-doubles, averaging 24.0 PPG and 13.0 APG in the past three games.

Young has knocked down 3.2 three-pointers per contest in six November outings. That includes a dismal two-point effort with a 1-of-10 shooting performance (including 0-of-6 from downtown) in a game against the Boston Celtics on November 4th. The last time he faced the Wizards on October 30th, he went for 35 points, 15 assists and four triples.

Jalen Johnson (PF, SF – ATL)

  • DraftKings: $8,900
  • FanDuel: $8,600

An Atlanta stack is always a good idea against the defensively challenged Wizards. Jalen Johnson is coming off a triple-double in Tuesday’s NBA Cup game against the Boston Celtics, going for 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists with three steals and a pair of 3-pointers.

In a recent back-to-back against the Wizards, he averaged 25.0 PPG, 14.5 PPG and 5.5 APG with 2.0 SPG, including a 17-rebound effort in D.C. in the second end of the back-to-back.

NBA DFS Cash Game Targets

Donovan Mitchell (PG, SG – CLE)

  • DraftKings: $8,200
  • FanDuel: $8,700

Donovan Mitchell flirted with a triple-double in Philadelphia last time out on Wednesday, going for 23 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists with two steals and five three-pointers. He has been red-hot from long distance, hitting at least three triples in six of the past seven games while hitting two or more treys in 11 consecutive outings for the 13-0 Cavaliers.

The sub-.500 Bulls don’t figure to offer up much resistance, either. They’re allowing 120.5 PPG while teams are hitting 47.9% from the field against them. The Bulls are pretty solid defending the three, but don’t let that dissuade you.

Alperen Sengun (C – HOU)

  • DraftKings: $8,200
  • FanDuel: $8,300

The big man faces a middle-of-the-road Clippers defense. He has rolled up 22.3 PPG with 12.7 RPG in the past three games while posting 3.7 APG and 2.7 BPG. He just faced L.A. on Wednesday night, going for 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, four blocked shots and a steal in 30 minutes.

RJ Barrett (PF, SF – TOR)

  • DraftKings: $8,100
  • FanDuel: $7,700

RJ Barrett has been struggling with his shot lately, but that shooting slump isn’t going to last forever. He managed just seven points on a dismal 3-of-14 shooting might Tuesday in Milwaukee, but he salvaged the line with seven boards, two assists and two steals with a three-pointer.

In November, despite shooting just 39.4% from the field, he is averaging a healthy 20.1 PPG, 6.1 RPG and 5.7 APG in seven games with 1.7 triples per contest.

NBA DFS GPP Targets

Luguentz Dort (SG, SF – OKC)

  • DraftKings: $4,800
  • FanDuel: $5,200

Lugentz Dort has stepped up on offense with a season-high three consecutive showings with a double-digit point total. With Chet Holmgren (hip) and a multitude of other Oklahoma City shooters sidelined, Dort has been pressed into more of a scoring role.

He is averaging 15.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.7 APG and 1.3 SPG in the past three outings, and he has three or more three-pointers in each outing. He has hit two triples in five of the past six games and seven of the previous 10 outings.

Jordan Poole (PG, SG – WAS)

  • DraftKings: $7,400
  • FanDuel: $7,800

Jordan Poole erupted for a season-high 42 points last time out in San Antonio, hitting 15-of-22 from the field, including six three-pointers. He also added six assists, two rebounds and two steals. His scoring production has fluctuated lately, alternating good games and mediocre outings in November. He has managed two or more three-pointers in five of his six November outings and in nine out of 10 games on the season.

Brandon Boston Jr. (PG, SG – NOP)

  • DraftKings: $6,400
  • FanDuel: $6,500

Brandon Boston Jr. faces a favorable matchup against the Denver Nuggets. With a plethora of injuries, he is likely to see extended minutes and ball-handling chores. While he has struggled with his shot in the past two games, going 6-of-23 from the field, he hit double digits in rebounds (10) last time out at Oklahoma City on Wednesday while doling out 10 assists in Monday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.

Boston Jr. is also working on a streak of two or more steals in three straight outings while averaging a three-pointer per contest in the three-game span.

NBA DFS Value Plays

Haywood Highsmith (SF, PF – MIA)

  • DraftKings: $4,500
  • FanDuel: $4,800

Haywood Highsmith is likely to make another start with Jimmy Butler (ankle) sidelined for a third consecutive outing. He was listed with a left knee bone bruise, but he is listed as being available. In the past four games, Highsmith is averaging 12.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG and 2.5 SPG, while going for a total of seven three-pointers in the span.

Josh Okogie (PF – PHO)

  • DraftKings: $3,800
  • FanDuel: $4,000

Josh Okogie might see a little more run with swingman Bradley Beal (calf) sidelined for a second consecutive game due to a strained left calf. He likely bought himself a bigger role Friday after dropping 25 points with eight rebounds, two steals and three triples in 28 minutes at Sacramento last time out on Wednesday with Beal on the shelf.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (PF, C – NOP)

  • DraftKings: $4,400
  • FanDuel: $4,600

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl has seen an increase in playing time since Zion Williamson (hamstring) went down with an injury. Robinson-Earl has managed 10.7 PPG, 4.7 RPG and 1.3 SPG across the past three outings while posting a pair of three-pointers. At this price point, he should well exceed DFS expectations while freeing up salary to use at the top of your lineup.
