WR/CB Matchups: Week 12

Advantageous Wide Receiver Matchups

Mike Evans (WR – TB) vs. Deonte Banks (CB – NYG)

Mike Evans has missed the past four weeks with a hamstring injury. However, coming off the bye, he has already returned to practice and looks set to make the lineup on Sunday against the New York Giants.

We have yet to see a game from Evans without Chris Godwin this season. However, we have seen how much the Buccaneers have struggled in the passing game since both Evans and Godwin have not been available. Especially against the 49ers in Week 10.

According to Fantasy Points, Evans has the second-highest average separation score against man coverage among receivers who have run at least 60 routes against man coverage this season. His 0.349 score is second to only Zay Flowers.

Evans is second in win rate (where the receiver receives a positive separation score on a route), behind only Brandon Aiyuk. The Giants rank in the top 10 in most man coverage played by the defense. They also allow the sixth-most fantasy points allowed per dropback while in man coverage.

Evans will be mostly covered by Deonte Banks this week. Banks is allowing 0.42 fantasy points per route run — the second-most fantasy points allowed by a cornerback this season.

Evans has a great schedule coming in and should be a WR2 this week with WR1 upside. Fantasy managers should have no reservations about playing him this week.

Courtland Sutton (WR – DEN) vs. Decamerion Richardson (CB – LV)

Courtland Sutton comes into Week 12 as the WR14 in fantasy scoring. He has double-digit returns in five of his last six games. He is also 12th in terms of target share, managing 24.4% of the total targets from Bo Nix.

Sutton also has a great matchup against Decemerion Richardson of the Las Vegas Raiders. According to Fantasy Points, Richardson is allowing 0.38 fantasy points per route run against this season. This is the sixth-most of all corners in the NFL entering Week 12.

Sutton is managing 0.39 fantasy points per route run. According to Fantasy Points, Sutton has averaged 30 routes a game over the past four weeks. If the averages pan out, that is 11.7 fantasy points before you add any reception bonuses and touchdowns. With these on top, Sutton should finish as a high-end WR2 this week, with WR1 upside if he finds paydirt.

Jauan Jennings (WR – SF) vs. Javon Bullard (CB – GB)

Jauan Jennings is fast becoming the go-to guy in the 49ers offense. According to Fantasy Points, Jennings has amassed a whopping 0.60 fantasy points per route run this season. Of all the starting receivers in the NFL this weekend, that mark ranks fourth entering Week 12. To compare, only Nico Collins, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Justin Jefferson have managed more fantasy points per route run this season.

In addition to this, he has a favorable matchup against Javon Bullard. The Packers cornerback is allowing 0.33 fantasy points per route run, which is tied for eighth among all cornerbacks in the NFL entering Week 12.

Jennings has another matchup this week to show fantasy managers he should be a staple in their lineups moving forward.

Challenging Wide Receiver Matchups

Kayshon Boutte (WR – NE) vs. Jalen Ramsey (WR – MIA)

Kayshon Boutte was a hot waiver wire pickup a couple of weeks ago. However, since his WR21 week against Houston in Week 6, he has finished as the WR59, WR58, WR75, WR40 and WR53. Furthermore, according to Sleeper, his rostership and starts have grown to double-digit numbers this week.

Please, do not start Boutte this week. He has one top-36 finish this season and he goes against Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey is allowing just 0.17 fantasy points per route run against him, which is tied for the eighth-lowest of any cornerback in Week 12.

There is no upside and no ceiling this week for Boutte fantasy managers. Drop Boutte and gamble on players like Nick Westbrook-Ikhine instead.

Jakobi Meyers (WR – LV) vs. Pat Surtain (CB – DEN)

Jakobi Meyers is just one of two or maybe three Raiders players fantasy managers could consider starting every week. However, Meyers’ upside is well and truly capped this week.

Meyers comes into this week as the WR38 overall. However, he has missed three weeks due to injury and a bye. On a points-per-game (PPG) basis he is the WR32. Too bad he will likely fall in both standings after this week.

Meyers is up against Pat Surtain. Surtain has been one of the best corners in the NFL this season and will be in consideration for Defensive Player of the Year honors if he keeps his form up for the rest of the season and the Broncos make the playoffs. In addition, his 0.14 fantasy points per route run allowed is the fourth-lowest mark in the NFL among starting cornerbacks this season.

Moreover, Meyers might hold a safe floor due to volume. However, it is a struggle to see him outperforming his current standing as a low-end WR3. Lastly, fantasy managers might want to consider chasing upside and sending Meyers to the bench this week.

Deebo Samuel (WR – SF) vs. Carrington Valentine (CB – GB)

Deebo Samuel has had a mixed season plagued by injury. The WR40 in PPG is no longer a must-start. While he is off the injury report, which is good news, Samuel does have a tough matchup this week.

According to Fantasy Points, Carrington Valentine allows only 0.15 fantasy points per route run. This ranks fifth among all cornerbacks playing in Week 12. In addition, Samuel’s fantasy points per route run is significantly lower than in previous seasons (0.38).

And then, with Jennings having such a good matchup on the other side, the feeling is Christian McCaffrey and he will hoover up the targets. Samuel will only flourish in a shootout-style game script. Fantasy managers need to strongly consider benching Samuel this week, depending on how they see the game going.
