Fantasy Football Discord AMA: Brock Purdy, Drake London & More

My Discord AMA on Friday afternoon was popping. The questions were coming fast and furious. There were a variety of team-specific questions. However, there were a few recurring questions or players involved in multiple questions. Let’s look at one question that was asked repeatedly and a pair of players involved in numerous questions.

Friday’s Fantasy Football Discord AMA Recap

Should Gamers Start Joe Burrow or Brock Purdy in Week 11?

A few gamers asked if they should start Joe Burrow or Brock Purdy this week. They are back to back in the Week 11 expert consensus rankings (ECR), with Purdy ranked as the QB4 and Burrow as the QB5.

I echoed the ECR, suggesting the gamers start Purdy over Burrow. The margin is narrow, but I chose to lean into the betting info. The Bengals are 1.5-point underdogs in a game with an over/under total of 48.0, leaving Cincinnati with an implied total of 23.25. Meanwhile, the 49ers are 6.5-point favorites at home, and the game’s total is 48.0 points. So, San Francisco has an implied total of 27.25 points.

In addition to having more favorable betting info, Purdy has a better matchup. The Chargers have held opposing quarterbacks to 15.1 points per game, and the Seahawks have yielded 17.1. In a coin-flip decision, I’m backing the quarterback, Purdy, with better betting info and the more desirable fantasy matchup.

How Should Gamers Handle Drake London in Week 11?

Drake London has had a fantastic season. He’s the WR13 in half point per reception (half PPR) points per game (13.0) this year. Sadly, London has his work cut out for him this week against Denver’s stingy pass defense.

According to Pro Football Reference, the Broncos have allowed the 10th-fewest passing yards per game (192.2) and have tied for the 11th-fewest passing touchdowns allowed (12) despite not having their bye yet. Pat Surtain looms for London in Denver’s secondary, and he’s terrorized wideouts this year. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Surtain has allowed only 16 receptions, 136 receiving yards, 8.5 yards per reception and one touchdown on 21 targets this year.

It’s unwise to overreact to a challenging matchup for a wide receiver. However, Surtain is a monster. London should have opportunities against Denver’s other cornerbacks, though. Per PFF, London has a 40.2% slot rate this year, and Surtain has aligned wide 448 times, in the box 31 and in the slot just 32 times this season.

Still, Denver has permitted the third-fewest half PPR points per game (21.0) to wide receivers this year. Moreover, trusting Kirk Cousins in a challenging matchup could burn fantasy gamers. Cousins’s numbers are substantially padded by carving up Tampa Bay’s pitiful pass-funnel defense twice.

London is the WR15 in half PPR ECR this week. I’m less enthused about London’s outlook this week. I was asked start-or-sit questions with London versus Jayden Reed, Cedric Tillman, Tee Higgins, Jakobi Meyers, Jaylen Waddle, Ladd McConkey, DeAndre Hopkins and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. I would start Reed, Tillman, Higgins, McConkey and Hopkins over London this week. London would get the nod over Meyers, Waddle and JSN.

Is Dawson Knox a Viable Streamer in Week 11?

Gamers with Trey McBride and others streaming tight end this year have a new option this week. Since Dalton Kincaid was already ruled out for Sunday, Dawson Knox will start in his absence. Knox had 3.3 receptions per game, 39.1 receiving yards per game and nine receiving touchdowns in 15 games as Buffalo’s starting tight end in 2021 and 3.2, 34.5 and six in 15 games in 2022.

The Bills are also without Keon Coleman and might not have Amari Cooper. Even if Cooper plays, Buffalo needs contributions from ancillary pass-catching weapons like Knox. The Bills have turned up their passing rate lately. According to RotoViz’s pace app, Buffalo has had a 61% situation-neutral pass rate since Week 7. Conversely, the Chiefs have faced a 56% situation-neutral pass rate since Week 7.

The Bills have a rock-solid implied total of 24.25, favorable for Knox’s touchdown potential. Knox also has a drool-inducing matchup. The Chiefs have coughed up the second-most half PPR points per game (13.1) to tight ends this year. Knox isn’t a flawless streamer. Still, among the players I was asked about in start-sit questions involving Knox, I’d start Buffalo’s fill-in starter over Pat Freiermuth, Hunter Henry, Will Dissly, Jonnu Smith and Dalton Schultz.
