NBA DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer

NBA DFS Core Plays

Cam Thomas (SG/PG – BKN)

  • DraftKings: $7,700
  • FanDuel: $8,000

Thomas has fired out of the gate for the Nets, going for 24 or more points in all three of his games, including 32 or more points in two of those outings. The former first-round pick of the Nets in 2021 really came into his own last season, more than doubling his points per game (22.5 PPG) average in 2023-24 over the previous season (10.6 PPG). All of his other counting stats have taken off, too, and this season he looks like he is taking the next step. He has at least five rebounds and 2.7 assists per game (APG) with 1.7 steals per game (SPG) and an amazing 12 3-pointers already, or 4.0 triples per game. His production makes this price a bargain.

DeMar DeRozan (SF/PF – SAC)

  • DraftKings: $7,900
  • FanDuel: $8,100

DeRozan has been rolling right along this season, posting 23 or more points in each of his three games. He might not rack up the triples anymore, but he is consistent in the scoring department while posting some boards and dimes. The best part is that the Kings are facing the Jazz, a team that allows 121.0 PPG, making them the worst defense of all eight NBA teams playing on Tuesday. You’ll want to roll up a stack of Kings against the leaky Jazz D.

Domantas Sabonis (C – SAC)

  • DraftKings: $9,300
  • FanDuel: $9,700

As mentioned above, you’re going to want a Sacramento stack…or, dare I say, a “Stack-ramento”? OK, that was bad. Or was it? Sabonis will take advantage of a soft Utah Jazz interior. He has managed 23.0 PPG, 11.0 RPG, and 6.0 APG in three games so far. A double-double is all but a given, but he’ll also toss in a triple or two, while posting an occasional block or steal, as well.

NBA DFS Cash Game Targets

Aaron Gordon (PF – DEN)

  • DraftKings: $6,100
  • FanDuel: $6,100

Gordon, who is fresh off signing a 4-year, $133 million extension, has been steadily contributing, and exceeding his DFS salary expectations. He has posted double-digit point totals in all three of his outings while going for nine or more boards in two games. Last time out in Toronto, Gordon rolled up 16 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists with two 3-pointers and two steals with a blocked shot. He is averaging 12.7 PPG, 8.3 RPG, and 4.0 APG, and he should keep up the good work against a so-so Brooklyn defense.

Andrew Wiggins (SG – GSW)

  • DraftKings: $5,700
  • FanDuel: $7,000

Wiggins has been dealing with a back injury, so circle back around closer to tip off and be ready to make a switch if necessary. However, Wiggins has the opportunity to see extended minutes and a lot more production with Stephen Curry (ankle) sidelined, and De’Anthony Melton (back) on the shelf. He has been battling a strained lower back, so be careful. However, last time out against the Clippers, Wiggins posted 29 points with five 3-pointers, and two games ago he had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. A double-double at this price could be outstanding.

Julius Randle (PF/C – MIN)

  • DraftKings: $7,600
  • FanDuel: $7,600

Randle had a slow debut in a loss last Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers, his original NBA team. He has gotten his sea legs in the past two games, going for 28.5 PPG, while averaging 7.0 RPG, 4.5 APG, and 3.0 3-pointers per game in the past two outings. He was an extremely efficient 13-of-17 last Thursday in Sacramento, too. As long as he stays out of foul trouble, and so far that hasn’t been an issue, he should more than exceed his DFS salary expectations.

NBA DFS GPP Targets

Walker Kessler (C – UTA)

  • DraftKings: $6,600
  • FanDuel: $5,700

Kessler is the fourth-cheapest pivot on the board. The 23-year-old is hit or miss in the scoring department, but he is a tremendous disrupter on the defensive end, cleaning the glass at a feverish rate, while blocking shots at a high rate, too. When his shot is falling, he is a bargain at this price. He has scored 12 or more points in two of his three games while going for nine or more boards in each game. He has eight blocked shots in three games, too, so what’s not to like?

Buddy Hield (SG/SF – GSW)

  • DraftKings: $5,500
  • FanDuel: $6,000

The Bahamian-born swing man rolled up 24.5 PPG in his first two games, but he had an off shooting night last time out with a 3-for-14 performance, checking in for just eight points. He is a veteran, and he should put that in the rear-view mirror. With no Curry or Melton, he should be one of the top two scoring options for Golden State on Tuesday night. Look for Hield to get to 20-plus points with a handful of boards and rebounds, while hitting some triples, too.

Malik Monk (PG/SF – SAC)

  • DraftKings: $5,400
  • FanDuel: $5,800

Monk gets a crack at the very leaky Utah Jazz defense. He has been a steady contributor on offense, going for at least 12 points in each of his three games. He is averaging 2.0 3-pointers per game, too. While he can be a little bit erratic, in the assists and rebounds departments, he can score and hit 3-pointers. At a mid-tier price, he offers you a solid option to save salary to allocate on a stud or two up top.

NBA DFS Value Plays

Brandon Podziemski (PG/SG – GSW)

  • DraftKings: $4,900
  • FanDuel: $5,700

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Curry will be sidelined for the next two games due to an ankle injury. Podziemski should see an increase in minutes. He has played exactly 25 minutes in all three games to date, and the results have been mixed. He showed some signs of life on October 25 in Utah, going for 15 points and five rebounds on 7-of-14 shooting. If he is on his game, he should get to at least 10 points and five boards.

Jordan Hawkins (SG – NOP)

  • DraftKings: $4,900
  • FanDuel: $5,100

Hawkins is a strong play, as he has been getting some extra run with Dejounte Murray (hand) sidelined. He has posted some big-time stats, and he checks in with a tremendous salary. Through three games, Hawkins has managed 18.0 PPG, 6.3 RPG, and 1.3 SPG, while averaging 3.0 3-pointers per game. Hawkins is even a perfect 9-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Brice Sensabaugh (SF/PF – UTA)

  • DraftKings: $3,500
  • FanDuel: $3,800

I don’t suggest you look it up but know that Taylor Hendricks suffered a gruesome fractured right tibia and dislocated ankle on Monday night in Dallas. He is obviously out indefinitely, so Sensabaugh is likely to see some extra run. He has not played much, but he has the chance to go for 20-plus minutes.
