Joe Mixon returns to practice on Thursday
Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (ankle) is returning to practice on Thursday ahead of Week 6, his first practice in multiple weeks.

Fantasy Impact

Mixon, who injured his ankle in a Week 2 contest, has been sidelined since, only returning for a Friday practice ahead of Week 4 in a limited participation. There is speculation he could have suffered a setback, but a return puts him on track for a potential Week 6 return. RB Cam Akers has started in his absence, and if both Mixon and Dameon Pierce return, he could return to the RB3 gig, with Mixon presumably returning to RB1 status for Houston. His situation should be monitored.

Fantasy Impact

It looks like Mixon is missing another day of practice because of an ankle injury. He has been sidelined since early in the season because of it, and the timetable for his recovery remains unclear at this point. There’s a chance that he will be back in Week 6, but this isn’t a good start to the week for the veteran.

Joe Mixon (ankle) status up in the air for Week 6
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said the team is “not sure” if Joe Mixon will be available against the Patriots in Week 6.

Fantasy Impact

It appears that Mixon may have suffered a setback when he returned to practice on Friday two weeks ago. Ryans added that Mixon is “definitely improving” and they’ll see where he is as the week goes on. If he remains sidelined, Dare Ogunbowale and Cam Akers will continue to split the snaps.

Joe Mixon (ankle) ruled out for Week 5
Joe Mixon (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Impact

Mixon will miss yet another game on Sunday. He’s still dealing with an ankle injury that he suffered earlier in the season, and he wasn’t able to practice all week because of it. It remains unclear if he will miss more time beyond this game, but either way, Cam Akers is set to see significantly more work in Week 5 in his absence.

What the Experts Are Saying

Mixon looks to be back this week. He had limited practices on Thursday and Friday. He has been listed as questionable, but he’s expected to play and handle a sizable workload. In his only full game this season, he handled 33 touches and produced 178 total yards. Mixon has only forced a missed tackle on 10% of his runs, with 2.28 yards after contact per attempt. These aren’t great numbers, and this week, while Mixon is playing, he is likely still not 100%, so we can’t expect his tackle-breaking to be much better than that baseline. He has a tough matchup this week, but if he sees anything close to his usual volume and red zone role, he’s somewhere in the RB2 realm. New England has allowed the 13th-fewest rushing yards per game, the third-lowest missed tackle rate, and the 11th-lowest rushing success rate.
