Wednesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
Chris Sale (ATL) vs. NYM
Chris Sale hasn't been fair lately. He's dominating. According to FanGraphs, in Sale's previous five starts spanning 30.0 innings, he's had a 1.20 ERA, 3.27 xFIP, 3.14 SIERA, 1.00 WHIP, 5.1 BB%, 28.8 K%, 28.0 CSW% and four quality starts. Sale doesn't have a favorable matchup, but his betting info is ideal.
The Mets are third in wRC+ (119) with a 21.7 K% versus lefties and tied for eighth in wRC+ (107) with a 22.2 K% on the road this season. New York was also fifth in wRC+ (127) with a 20.4 K% in the previous 14 days. Thus, the Braves are -185, and the game's total is 7.5 runs.
Kevin Gausman (TOR) vs. BOS
Kevin Gausman has been rock-solid lately, albeit lucky. In his last five starts totaling 30.2 innings, he's had a 2.35 ERA, 4.05 xFIP, 4.12 SIERA, 1.01 WHIP, 8.3 BB%, 23.3 K%, 27.4 CSW%, 93 Stuff+, 105 Location+, 102 Pitching+ and three quality starts. His matchup is good through one lens, and his betting info is favorable.
The Red Sox are tied for ninth in wRC+ (106) with a 24.4 K% versus righties and sixth in wRC+ (109) with a 24.9 K% on the road this season. However, Boston was 27th in wRC+ (75) with a 27.9 K% in the previous 14 days. So, the Red Sox are slumping and strikeout-prone. Finally, the Blue Jays are -140, and the game's total is 8.0 runs.
Brady Basso (OAK) vs. TEX
Brady Basso has shined since moving into Oakland's rotation. In three starts spanning 16.0 innings, Basso has had a 1.69 ERA, 3.91 xFIP, 4.17 SIERA, 1.13 WHIP, 6.2 BB%, 20.0 K%, 27.8 CSW%, 81 Stuff+, 106 Location+, 100 Pitching+ and one quality start. He can maintain momentum in a plus matchup.
The Rangers are tied for 20th in wRC+ (92) with a 23.4 K% versus lefties and 26th in wRC+ (88) with a 20.7 K% on the road this year. Texas was also 25th in wRC+ (78) with a 22.3 K% in the previous 14 days. The Athletics are slight underdogs (EVEN), but the game's total is a pitcher-friendly 7.5 runs.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
In what should be a surprise to no one, Austin Gomber has stunk at home. In 146.1 innings at home since last season, Gomber has had a 5.97 ERA, 4.85 xFIP, 1.48 WHIP and allowed 1.97 HR/9. Colorado's bullpen is MLB's worst and the only one with an ERA north of 5.00. Thus, St. Louis's offense should explode tonight in MLB's most hitter-friendly ballpark.
- Road (Truist Park)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 7.5 Runs/NYM +150
Sale is the top-ranked pitcher tonight. So, why are the Mets suggested as a stack? They're a contrarian GPP-centric stack due to their excellence. While Sale is a nightmare matchup for any offense, New York can rough him up if he's not sharp. The Mets are third in wRC+ (119) versus lefties and tied for eighth in wRC+ (107) on the road this year. They're also hot, ranking fifth in wRC+ (127) in the previous 14 days. Finally, while Francisco Lindor isn't listed on the table, he could return tonight, adding a significant bat to New York's lineup.
Core Studs
- Paul Goldschmidt is a lefty killer. In 467 plate appearances against southpaws since 2022, Goldy has hit 20 homers with a .413 OBP, .222 ISO and 165 wRC+.
- In 420 plate appearances against lefties since 2022, Nolan Arenado has hit 21 homers with a .286 OBP, .218 ISO and 100 wRC+. A .216 BABIP hurt him, but his power was still impressive.
- In 225 career plate appearances against lefties since debuting in 2023, Masyn Winn has hit nine homers with a .298 OBP, .199 ISO and 103 wRC+. He'll also benefit from hitting leadoff at Coors Field.
Value Plays/Punts
- Jordan Walker is a matchup and park-factors-driven punt. He's also in good form. In Walker's last 22 games and 78 plate appearances, he's hit five homers with 10 runs, 15 RBIs, a .269 OBP, .243 ISO and 104 wRC+.
- Pavin Smith is dialed in. In his previous 23 games and 74 plate appearances, he's hit five homers with 13 runs, 16 RBIs, a .392 OBP, .344 ISO and 173 wRC+.
- In 684 plate appearances against righties since 2022, Trevor Larnach has hit 27 homers with a .326 OBP, .196 ISO and 114 wRC+.
