3 Fantasy Football Trades to Propose in Week 3

Javonte Williams (RB — DEN) for Jaxon Smith-Njigba (WR — SEA)

The stars were aligning for Javonte Williams heading into his fourth professional season. He was more than a year removed from a massive ACL injury that cut short his 2022 season, with the 2023 season being used to ramp back up. He was the unquestioned starter after Denver failed to sign a free agent or draft a back any earlier than the fifth round this year (more on that in a bit). But we’ve quickly seen how bad quarterback play can take down an entire offense. Rookie Bo Nix has looked lost in his first two weeks as the Broncos’ starter. In turn, the offense has scored just once — a rushing touchdown by Nix himself, of all people — and doesn’t appear to show any signs of turning it around. This will affect no one more than Williams. If the offense can’t get going, the run game won’t be utilized nearly as much. Williams will have value as long as he’s part of the passing game — like in Week 2 when he caught five passes for 48 yards — but his run stats may be non-existent.

The Broncos’ Week 1 opponent, the Seahawks, don’t have a problem on offense, at least through the first two weeks. They’re currently a top-10 scoring offense and have studs all over the field. An emerging one is receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He’s coming off the best game of his career in Week 2, converting 16 targets into 12 receptions for 117 yards. The 16 targets led the team and he shattered his personal best yardage total by 50 yards. With veteran Tyler Lockett another year older, and DK Metcalf still drawing the most attention, JSN is primed to break out. He (JSN) may be a luxury for fantasy teams that may be desperate for a running back (Williams), giving this deal a chance to get done.

Xavier Worthy (WR — KC) for Zach Charbonnet (RB — SEA)

You can tell by the previous section that the Seahawks’ offense is trending up right now, and that includes Zach Charbonnet. Filling in for the injured Kenneth Walker III, Charbonnet led the team with 14 carries in Week 2. He finished with just 38 yards but did score. He also added five receptions for 31 yards and was working as a true workhorse, playing on an incredible 95% of the snaps in Week 2. Of course, Charbonnet is in line for that kind of workload based on Walker missing time, which he is expected to do at least for another week. But even if and when Walker comes back, Charbonnet will be a big part of the offense as the offense has performed well with him in it. The offense is currently ranked sixth in offensive DVOA after Charbonnet played a third of the offensive snaps in Week 1 and nearly every snap in Week 2.

So why give up Xavier Worthy? He exploded on the scene in the primetime opener for the Chiefs, scoring once on the ground and another through the air. But he had just three touches all game. He had three touches in Week 2 as well, but he didn’t score, which is the crux of the issue: Worthy is a boom-or-bust player. He’s on a very good offense, and there’s not much competition for touches in front of him, but he’s clearly not going to be leading the team in targets anytime soon — that honor goes to receiver Rashee Rice. Worthy certainly has Deebo Samuel-like traits that would allow him to see rush attempts as well as targets, but he’s nowhere near getting Deebo’s workload. Deebo saw just 22 rush attempts in his first two seasons in the league and wasn’t fully deployed as a dual threat until his third season. Worthy will enter just the third week of his professional career this week, and there will never be a better time to sell high.

Rachaad White (RB — TB) and Hunter Henry (TE — NEP) for Kyler Murray (QB — ARI) and Jameson Williams (WR — DET)

Rachaad White and Hunter Henry should both be traded, but for very different reasons. In White’s case, his draft value is quickly drying up as his season is off to a rocky start. There’s no doubt that he’s the lead back in Tampa (for now), but he’s done nothing to justify being drafted as high as he was. He’s averaging a paltry 2.0 yards per carry and has yet to score.

By contrast, Hunter Henry had, literally, the best game of his career in Week 2, tying a career-high with eight receptions and totaling a career-high 109 yards. Henry wasn’t drafted nearly as high as White, nor considered a TE1, but he played like one Sunday. His fantasy stock is at its highest point in years, which should be cashed in immediately. You can use the allure of Henry with the volume of White to make an enticing package.

In exchange, target Kyler Murray and Jameson Williams. In Murray’s case, he is who we thought he was. Every season he’s been healthy, he’s a top-10 fantasy quarterback. He’s off to a great start this season, throwing for 428 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Cardinals’ first two games and adding 116 yards on the ground. He’s on his way to a top-three fantasy finish so far.

Williams has finally fulfilled his potential, which fantasy managers have waited for since he became the 12th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Injuries slowed the start of his career, but now, he’s fully healthy and taking off. He’s carved out a role as the second-most targeted pass catcher in Detroit, turning 20 targets into 10 receptions for 200 yards and a touchdown. He currently ranks as a top-25 fantasy player overall and would make an excellent WR2 for the rest of the season.
