Fantasy Football Roster Trends: Adds, Drops & Most Traded (Week 4)

Another wild week of fantasy is behind us and players are blowing up and crashing down harder than ever. Let’s look at the top players moving to and from waivers and between teams after Week 3. Hopefully, it can help us understand why and predict some moves to make before Week 4 is in the books.

Fantasy Football Roster Trends: Adds, Drops & Most Traded (Week 4)

Trending Up

Cole Kmet (TE – CHI)

Believe it or not, Kmet is TE3 on the season through three weeks. He’s averaging 11.3 PPR points per game while catching 15-of-17 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. However, of his 33.7 PPR points this year, he scored 25.7 PPR points last week. This TE2 performance in Week 3 is why he was added in 5.3% of linked leagues on FantasyPros. I’m much more cautious about Kmet’s future outlook. If you added him this week you might need to start him. I would try to avoid it if I could, because spike weeks at the tight end position are widespread, and I’m not sure he’s going to do it again against the Rams in Week 4.

Jauan Jennings (WR – SF)

Much like Kmet, Jennings had a terrific Week 3, finishing as WR1 with 46.5 PPR points. He caught 11-of-12 targets for 175 yards and three touchdowns. He outscored the WR2 by 16.7 points, which is just nuts. 4.5% of leagues added Jennings, which was probably the most obvious choice of the week. Jennings is in his fourth season and has only seen more than five targets in a game five times. This was the first time he’s seen 10 or more targets. That all points to me that this is a flash in the pan and I’m very hesitant to start him unless I have to. Sure, he might have won people some matchups, but he’s much more likely to revert to his usual dud of a performance in Week 4.

Sam Darnold (QB – MIN)

Last on the most added list this week is the QB4 on the season in Mr. Darnold. 3.2% of leagues showed an add for Darnold and yet again, I totally understand why. However, instead of this being a reaction to a singular outstanding performance, I think it’s more about the long-term outlook. Darnold was QB9 in Week 3 with 23.2 PPR points, which is just ahead of his 19.3 average on the year. Only Josh Allen, Jayden Daniels and Lamar Jackson have a higher average score on the season. Darnold has looked much better than expected, and as fantasy managers are likely moving on from players like Justin Herbert, Tua Tagovailoa and Caleb Williams, he’s the perfect pivot candidate off of waivers.

Trending Down

Demarcus Robinson (WR – LAR)

After Rams WR Puka Nacua was sent to IR and Cooper Kupp had his own injury history, fantasy managers were scrambling for the next man up. Robinson seemed to be a good choice, averaging five targets per game. While that’s a good opportunity, he hasn’t done much with it, averaging a meager 6.5 PPR points per game. This has led to 2.6% of leagues dropping Robinson to look for another option off waivers. Both Robinson and Tyler Johnson have been disappointments with their newly found opportunity. Both made the list, but Robinson is at the top for Week 4.

Hunter Henry (TE – NE)

Henry had a great Week 2 but crashed back to earth in Week 3. In Week 2, he caught 8-of-12 passes for 109 yards and scored 18.9 PPR points. Following that amazing performance, he went 2-for-3 for nine yards in Week 3. Yikes. It’s no wonder that Henry was dropped in 2.1% of linked leagues. Tight end is a hellscape in fantasy this year and managers are scrambling to find someone worth starting. Given how unpredictable it’s been, I totally get the reactionary move here. Look at the matchups and try to predict the next one rather than chase last week’s points. That could lead to a better overall outcome and less overall disappointment.

Cam Akers (RB – HOU)

This one confuses me. I thought Akers looked pretty good in Week 2 when he got nine carries for 21 yards. He also caught one of three targets for eight yards and a touchdown. He was carried by that score, but he seemed to be more agile than I thought he would. Obviously, he’s a backup and not someone I’m excited to start, but I wouldn’t mind keeping him on my bench. Instead, Akers was third in drops this week with 1.9% of leagues kicking him back to waivers. Maybe it’s because his box score was so clearly misleading, or maybe it’s because starter Joe Mixon may be back sooner rather than later. Either way, I’m scooping Akers in leagues where I need RB depth.

Most Traded

Tyreek Hill (WR – MIA)

The number one player getting traded before Week 4 is the cheetah himself. Hill is going to suffer with the QB change in Miami, whether it’s Skylar Thompson or newly acquired backup Tyler Huntley. Hill started the season hot, scoring 26 PPR points in Week 1, but since then he’s only scored 6.6 and 7.0 PPR points. I’m assuming many managers are selling low here, trying to get whatever value they can before he becomes benchable. Seeing him move in 1.5% of leagues makes total sense to me given all that is going on with him this year. I’m not touching him until we see him get back to normal, which might be next season at this point.

JK Dobbins (RB – LAC)

Dobbins’ shine may be fading already. He’s made the list of most traded after Weeks 1 and 2 and makes this list again after Week 3. He went from RB4 overall after Week 2 down to RB9 after Week 3. He didn’t look nearly as good this week, only scoring 8.4 PPR points. Teams were likely trading for him in the other weeks but now I’m wondering if they’re trading him away. Trades are trades though, so if someone wants out, you still need to find someone that wants in. I’m curious if we see Dobbins again next week after another 1.3% of linked leagues saw him switch fantasy teams.

Brandon Aiyuk (WR – SF)

Last but not least is Aiyuk, who was also traded in 1.3% of leagues. Aiyuk is currently WR57 overall in PPR scoring even though he’s played in all three games and seen 20 total targets. He hasn’t found the end zone yet, but even if he had, he’d still be a disappointment. The 49ers look very different without stud RB Christian McCaffrey, and it seems like they are spreading things around differently than we expected. I’d rather be trading Aiyuk away than adding him to my roster unless I can get him for a steal. However, there must still be buyers out there since he made the top three in traded players this week. Here’s hoping he turns it around.
