Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Rankings & Waiver Pickups (Week 26)

Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Rankings & Waiver Pickups (Week 26)

Now that the fantasy baseball season is almost done, you should be grinding the two-start pitchers to give you an advantage over your competition.

Each week, I will be giving you a breakdown of the two-start options for your fantasy leagues broken up into the following tiers:

  • Must Start: The players that you have to start because of their talent and/or matchups.
  • Should Start: These are the players that are rostered in most formats and probably should be in your lineup.
  • Here We Go: Pitchers that you are probably starting in most formats but have some level of risk to them.
  • Feeling Lucky: Pitchers available in less than 25% of leagues that are risky, but viable in deeper formats.
  • Desperate Measures: Pitchers you shouldn’t use unless you have no other choice.

These are projected two-start pitchers and are subject to change and will as the season ends.

Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers

Must Start

Should Start

Michael King (SDP) at LAD, at ARI

Michael King has pitched fantastically in the second half and probably deserves to be in the must-start tier, but these are really tough matchups. The Dodgers are finally back to full strength offensively, and the Diamondbacks have been one of the best teams in baseball since the break. I would still use him in virtually all formats, but the back half of this two-start week could be shortened for King if the Padres clinch a playoff berth before Sunday.

Nestor Cortes (NYY) vs. BAL, vs. PIT

Just like King, Nestor Cortes has been fantastic in the second half and deserves to be in the Must Start tier, but he could see the latter half of this two-step be shortened once the Yankees clinch the division. The matchups aren’t that bad though, so you should use him in most formats.

Here We Go

Eduardo Rodriguez (ARI) vs. SF, vs. SD

Eduardo Rodriguez has been pretty mediocre since coming off the IL, but he is facing a bad Giants offense at home and could be seeing a depleted Padres lineup by the time Sunday rolls around. It’s a gamble if the Giants end up playing him better than expected, but the Diamondbacks have been one of the better teams in baseball over the second half, so he could be in line for a win or two.

Tanner Houck (BOS) at TOR, vs. TB

Tanner Houck has been up and down recently, with two bad starts in his last four. However, these aren’t bad matchups at all, and the Red Sox have no real reason to limit him since they won’t be going to the playoffs. So it isn’t a bad spot to roll him out there.

Feeling Lucky

Jonathan Cannon (CWS) vs. LAA, at DET

I don’t think Jonathan Cannon is a particularly talented pitcher, and he pitches for the worst team in baseball, but these are decent matchups. The Angels are bad as well, and he just pitched decently enough against them to get a win. While the Tigers are hot right now, by Sunday, they should know whether they are in the playoffs or not and could rest a lot of their hitters.

Brady Basso (OAK) vs. TEX, at SEA

Brady Basso has pitched well for the A’s since joining their rotation, and he has two pretty good matchups versus non-playoff teams that have nothing to play for by the time these games get going. There is limited upside because of the lack of strikeouts, but he could sneak a win or two in nice pitching parks.

Luis Severino (NYM) at ATL, at MIL

Luis Severino has been great at home but terrible on the road this season, posting a 4.80 road ERA. He is facing two tough matchups on the road, though the Brewers may not need a full lineup as their playoff spot will already be locked in by the end of the week.

Hayden Birdsong (SF) at ARI, vs. STL

Hayden Birdsong has pitched better lately, but he can struggle with command and control at times, which can lead to blowout outings. He has a tough matchup to start the week but a good one to finish it, and there is no reason to think he needs to be limited in his final start.

Landon Knack (LAD) vs. SD, at COL

Landon Knack has been pretty good for the Dodgers since filling in for all their injured pitchers, but this is a brutal set of matchups versus a very good Padres team and on the road in Coors Field. The Dodgers will give him run support, so he could have a shot at two wins, which is the real reason to gamble with playing him.
