Fantasy Football Outlook: Will Deebo Samuel Play Week 4?

Deebo Samuel Sr. expected to play Sunday vs. Patriots
San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel Sr., who was dealing with a calf injury, is expected to return to action in Week 4 against the New England Patriots.

Fantasy Impact

It’s unclear if he could be on any sort of pitch count, but after initially having a timetable of multiple weeks, Samuel is set to return after just one week off due to a calf injury. Samuel was DNP-limited-limited in practice, and if he plays, he provides high-end upside as a threat to receive valuable and schemed-up touches in a dangerous offense that is returning its top weapons (TE George Kittle also set to return in Week 4). This bumps down the value for any managers looking to Flex Jauan Jennings again after his smash-hit Week 3 outing.

Deebo Samuel Sr. (calf) questionable for Week 4
Deebo Samuel Sr. (calf) is questionable to play in Week 4’s game against the New England Patriots.

Fantasy Impact

Samuel was initially expected to be out this week, but he has been recovering well from his calf injury and will have a chance to play in Week 4. A decision about his availability will be made closer to game time, and his return to the lineup would make Jauan Jennings nothing more than a bench stash moving forward.

Deebo Samuel Sr. (calf) has a real chance at suiting up in Week 4.

Fantasy Impact

John Lynch told media on Friday that Samuel has a real chance of playing in Week 4. He was out last week due to a calf injury, and the team is planning on making a determination for him depending on how Friday’s practice goes. If he’s active, that will mean a lot less work for Jauan Jennings moving forward.

Deebo Samuel Sr. (calf) was officially a limited participant at practice on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact

Samuel was able to log a limited practice session on Thursday. He has been sidelined for over a week thanks to a calf injury, so it’s good to see him back out on the field with the team. His Week 4 status remains to be determined, and fantasy managers should expect him to be back in the lineup sooner rather than later.

Fantasy Impact

Samuel was not able to participate during Wednesday’s practice. He’s currently dealing with a calf injury, and it looks like he is trending towards missing another week in Week 4. Jauan Jennings remains a quality flex option for however long Samuel remains sidelined moving forward.

Deebo Samuel Sr. (calf) set to miss a couple of weeks
San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel Sr. is slated to miss a couple of weeks with a calf strain he suffered on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact

The 49ers’ injuries are piling up, and Samuel, who saw 10 touches for 100 scrimmage yards in Week 2 and 13 for 77 in Week 1, is now in line to miss some time. Samuel split snaps out wide and in the backfield and is now dealing with a calf injury. Given his recent history recently with soft tissue injuries, the 49ers may proceed with caution and give him time to heal, setting the stage for RB Jordan Mason, WR Brandon Aiyuk and TE George Kittle to lead the way in San Francisco. The Niners face the Rams and Patriots over their next two games.

What the Experts Are Saying

Avg = 2-3 weeks. WR calf re-injury risk = high. Week 5 = possible, but data suggests Week 6 return as more likely.
– Dr. Deepak Chona, MD

Samuel is still dealing with a calf issue. He didn’t practice on Wednesday, and I doubt he will play in Week 4.
