Renegade Fantasy: Stuck in Fantasy Purgatory? Now You Can Sub

We’ve all been there: Your star receiver lands awkwardly, grimaces in pain and limps off the field, his playing future uncertain and your immediate fantasy prospects imperiled. Or maybe your quarterback is having one of those days, missing open receivers and serving up meatballs to opposing defensive backs. Your running back can’t get touches in the red zone. Your tight end, playing in a driving rainstorm, has been reduced to blocking on the edge.

Welcome to Fantasy Football Hell.

It’s a helpless feeling, knowing your team’s fortunes are sunk and there’s no remedy at your disposal. If only there were a way to make a move and give your team a fighting chance.

Now—at long last—there is. Finally, you can become a true fantasy coach, rather than just an owner/GM, and go to the bench for salvation in times of need.

By allowing you to make strategic substitutions, Renegade Fantasy Football will change the way you play. And, by extension, it will change the way you build your team.

Renegade Fantasy Football Draft Strategies

When mapping out a draft strategy and, eventually, when combing the waiver wire, there are all sorts of nuanced considerations that will enter the equation. And with each league’s commissioner now afforded the power to increase roster sizes to as many as 22 slots, digging deeper—and preparing for a multitude of scenarios—will carry more value than ever before.

For example: If you thought handcuffing was an intriguing strategy in the past, it now carries added oomph. If Christian McCaffrey is your first pick, it absolutely behooves you to try to squeeze his 49ers backup, Elijah Mitchell, onto your bench. Say McCaffrey rolls his ankle in the first quarter and can’t continue. Your smoothest move as a Renegade coach may be to replace him with Mitchell, who’ll likely absorb the bulk of his touches.

Real-Time Adjustments

Because you can now adjust on the fly to real-time developments—injuries, weather, blowouts, breakout performances, faceplants—it means you don’t need to be as conservative when it comes to team-building. Taking a chance on a player whose production tends to come in spurts and whose involvement in the gameplan varies isn’t such a risky move. Picking a quarterback with a penchant for getting red hot—and, alternatively, ice cold—makes a lot more sense when he can be subbed in or out at your discretion.

For that matter, arming your roster with two or even three strong QBs is almost imperative. That’s especially true if your QB1 tends to be on the winning end of a lot of lopsided scores; now, when garbage time comes, you can replace him with someone who’s still fighting for points.

That coach who can’t decide which running back to feature on a given Sunday? Still annoying, but at least having one of those backs on your team isn’t such an all-or-nothing proposition. If he’s getting the rock, ride him. If he isn’t, sit him down and go with another option.

Maximum Flexibility!

This can go much, much deeper. Will you choose to carry multiple defenses, perhaps pairing a unit that tends to shine early in games with one that’s stingy in second halves? Will you skew slightly toward players on non-marquee teams who are likely to play a hefty proportion of games in the early Sunday slot, potentially affording you maximum flexibility when it comes to on-the-fly lineup decisions? Or will you value players on teams who play multiple games on Sunday and Monday nights, allowing you to hold back some potential moves until you know exactly how many points are required to win?

There’s a lot to ponder in the coming weeks, and your mindset—as with your in-game lineups—will likely evolve on the fly. That’s the fun part. Mastering this new, improved version of fantasy football won’t be easy, but it certainly won’t be boring.

Best of all, when you find yourself in Fantasy Football Hell, take heart. Now, there’s a potential escape route, allowing you to keep hope alive.
