PGA DFS Advice & Picks: FedEx St. Jude Championship (2024)

The FedEx Cup Playoffs are upon us. Only 70 players qualified this year, down from 125 in years prior. Those 70 golfers descend on Memphis, Tennessee with big dollar signs in their eyes and a no-cut, 72-hole romp around the links to hopefully advance to next week’s 50-man BMW Championship.

PGA DFS has been very kind to us in these limited-field events. We’ve attacked these tournaments with reckless abandon, knowing all six of our rostered golfers will get to play four rounds. Leverage is a relative term this week since I’ll be able to eat more value chalk down the board. Fade the favorites? Not hardly. This event traditionally favors the best golfers in the world (or at least the hottest). At least the projected rostership is mostly balanced at the top. My focus will be on single-entry tournaments and cash games while maxing out a few three-max entry contests for some variance.

TPC Southwind in Memphis is a brave bramble through the Bermuda. The course itself is of average Tour length at just more than 7,200 yards. The par-70 track is well-guarded by water hazards and strangling Bermuda rough. The Bermuda greens are receptive, but are notoriously fast to putt on, especially when running with the grain. Lucas Glover was on an incendiary run in 2023 and took home the St. Jude with unbelievable ball-striking and an untenably hot putter.

While not unheard of for long shots to prevail, this event is usually domineered by the golfers with a keen grasp on their entire golf bag (i.e. the favorites). Missed fairways are a huge penalty since they remove any real chance of scoring birdies. Good drives gained and proximity on approach (ball striking in general) are of paramount importance. Either good putting or hot recent putting form can round out solid tee-to-green play and separate one from the field in a hurry. From a riverboat on the mighty Mississippi, let’s dig in.
