Overvalued Fantasy Football Players to Avoid: CBS Leagues
With the preseason officially underway following the Chicago Bears’ 21-17 win over the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame game, fantasy drafts across all platforms are heating up. Below, I’ll examine some overvalued players on the CBS Sports fantasy football platform using expert consensus rankings (ECR) from FantasyPros and comparing them to average draft position (ADP) data on CBS Sports.
All rankings are for PPR formats. Let’s dive in.
Jalen Hurts (QB – PHI): ECR – 26 Overall | CBS – 21 Overall
Over at CBS, Jalen Hurts is going at QB1 and 21st overall. Hurts is only slightly behind with the expert rankings, but I’d argue he’s closer to QB4 or QB5 than QB1.
Hurts would be my QB4 behind Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes — in that order.
Hurts finished as the QB2 in 2023 with 370.2 points. He threw for 3,858 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions and added 605 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.
The 15 rushing touchdowns were a career-high for Hurts, who had 13 in 2022 and 10 in 2021.
While I think Hurts will still be valuable on the ground, adding Saquon Barkley will hinder his rushing statistics. Before Barkley, he had D’Andre Swift and Miles Sanders to contend with. Barkley is a bonafide top running back in the league with an RB5 or higher upside.
Hurts will continue his way through the air, but I have to wonder if the added reps for Barkley will just eat into his production overall.
Don’t avoid Hurts altogether, just avoid him at his QB1 price.
Zamir White (RB – LV): ECR – 75 Overall | CBS – 53 Overall
This is a massive price gap. At CBS, Zamir White is currently going as the RB18 in PPR leagues.
While the running back position becomes a “pick your poison” relatively quickly, White is ahead of players like James Conner, Aaron Jones, D’Andre Swift and Najee Harris at CBS.
White has youth on his side as he enters his third season in the NFL. In 2023, though, he averaged 4.3 yards per carry on 104 carries. He had 451 yards and a score.
The quarterback position hasn’t changed, especially if Aidan O’Connell is named the starter.
Las Vegas’s running back depth leaves a lot to be desired. White could play his way into a valuable role based on volume, but there are players like Alexander Mattison and Dylan Laube behind him who could eat into rushing and pass-catching production.
A near top-50 pick isn’t something I want any part of when it comes to White. There are too many question marks here.
George Kittle (TE – SF): ECR – 71 Overall | CBS – 58 Overall
This pick of George Kittle being overpriced comes before any potential trade involving wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. If that happens, I can understand this price point more, though the 49ers will want to work in Ricky Pearsall.
Assuming Aiyuk stays on the roster, Kittle is ahead of players like Kyle Pitts, Evan Engram and Jake Ferguson.
Kittle did finish with 65 receptions for 1,020 yards and six touchdowns in 2023 and was the TE5, but the addition of Pearsall could eat into his production. More if Aiyuk stays on the roster.
As for those players behind him, Pitts will be more involved than ever with Kirk Cousins as his quarterback, Evan Engram should remain productive with Calvin Ridley departing and Jake Ferguson is likely the No. 2 receiver on the Dallas Cowboys behind CeeDee Lamb.
We’ll see what happens with Aiyuk, but some other valuable assets are going near Kittle at this price point you should consider instead.
