Thursday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
Bryan Woo (SEA) vs. DET
Bryan Woo is a beast at home. According to FanGraphs, in 12 starts at home since last year, Woo has had a 2.26 ERA, 3.62 xFIP, 0.90 WHIP, 4.5 BB%, 26.8 K% and three quality starts in 63.2 innings. Despite injuries stopping and starting his 2024 campaign, they haven't depressed his electrifying stuff. Woo has had 107 Stuff+, 109 Location+ and 110 Pitching+ pitch-modeling metrics in his previous four starts.
He has a drool-inducing matchup tonight. The Tigers are tied for 24th in wRC+ (90) with a 23.8 K% versus righties and 26th in wRC+ (86) with a 25.0 K% on the road this year. Detroit has also been 29th in wRC+ (72) with a 24.0 K% since the All-Star break.
Nestor Cortes (NYY) vs. LAA
Like Woo, Nestor Cortes has excelled at home. In 18 home starts spanning 106.1 innings since last year, the lefty has had a 3.22 ERA, 4.05 xFIP, 0.99 WHIP, 4.3 BB%, 24.8 K% and 10 quality starts. Unfortunately, Cortes has had a few messy turns lately.
Nevertheless, the southpaw has a get-right matchup on tap. The Angels are tied for 20th in wRC+ (93) with a 20.8 K% versus lefties and 27th in wRC+ (85) with a 21.4 K% on the road. They also aren't turning their season around, ranking tied for 25th in wRC+ (87) with a 22.0 K% since the All-Star break. As a result, the Yankees are -240, and the game's total is 8.5 runs.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
The Diamondbacks have a top-shelf offense by every applicable split for tonight's matchup. Arizona is tied for fifth in wRC+ (117) versus lefties and eighth in wRC+ (113) at home. They've also ranked third in wRC+ (139) since the All-Star break. The injuries to Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno weren't ideal. Still, they have high-end firepower and depth.
The matchup will be a cupcake against Kolby Allard. The 26-year-old southpaw has a 4.50 ERA, 4.13 xERA and 4.93 xFIP in two appearances (one start) this year. Moreover, he's had a 6.05 ERA and 4.93 xFIP in 253.0 innings in his big-league career.
