Here are players that are likely to be available when you make your selection:
Players to Target at 1.09 Fantasy Football Draft Pick
If available, you should target these fantasy football players at the 1.09 draft pick.
Amon-Ra St. Brown (WR – DET)
After the true elite wide receivers are off the board, Amon-Ra St. Brown represents the best of the rest. Over three seasons, St. Brown has 3,588 receiving yards on 429 targets — the sixth-most among wide receivers in that spell — only trailing Davante Adams (524), Tyreek Hill (500), Stefon Diggs (478), CeeDee Lamb (457) and Justin Jefferson (451). In 27 of 52 career games, St. Brown has managed to record either 80+ receiving yards or score a touchdown, giving fantasy managers a fantastic floor and an excellent ceiling with the sixth-most 20+ point PPR games in the last three years. St. Brown feels like less of a safe pick than those who come before him in average draft position (ADP). The Lions ran hot in 2023 and their offense looks well set for the long term. But if Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta make second-year leaps (which is not uncommon) and Jameson Williams finally has a clean offseason, then it could eat into Brown’s volume somewhat. Although, if you don’t like the running backs at the 1.08, St. Brown is the clear choice.
If we arrive at the 1.11 and Puka Nacua, Breece Hall and Bijan Robinson are off the board, AJ Brown becomes a lot easier to target. This past year was a tale of two halves for Brown, who scored 22.6 points per game in Weeks 1-9 before falling off a cliff and scoring only 12.3 points per game for the rest of the season. Part of this can be attributed to the Eagles’ collapse in general and an injury to Jalen Hurts that we never heard any proper details about, but was rumored to be a bone bruise – an injury known to hamper dual-threat quarterbacks.
Brown might come with some risk, but if the Eagles can stay more consistent in 2024, having a player who can average over 22 points a game is a massive advantage in fantasy football.
So far through Garrett Wilson’s young NFL career, he’s caught passes or at least has been targeted by quarterbacks like Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, Mike White, Chris Streveler, Trevor Siemian, Tim Boyle and briefly took the field with Aaron Rodgers. Even at 40 years of age and coming off an Achilles injury, Rodgers is still by far the best quarterback Wilson will have played with. Wilson has posted an identical 56.5% catch rate in both of his seasons in the NFL and it shouldn’t be surprising to see that number jump a good amount this year. The biggest concern will be whether the Jets play slowly and their defense keeps the games low-scoring. Rodgers has always had his favorites in the red zone and Wilson can thrive as long as someone keeps Nathaniel Hackett from being too involved.
Players to Avoid at 1.09 Fantasy Football Draft Pick
Here are a few potential fantasy football landmines that you should avoid.
Having just turned 27 years old this offseason, Saquon Barkley isn’t necessarily past his prime just yet, but he’s played over 14 games just once in the last three years. Through seven seasons, he only has three 1,000-yard seasons. Barkley finds himself playing on the best offense and with the best offensive line of his career now that he’s made the intra-division jump to the Eagles, but there are still reasons to be pessimistic.
Barkley has averaged 293 receiving yards per season over the last three years, falling below 1.0 yards per route run in two of the last three and having not been above 1.5 since his rookie season. The Eagles threw the ball to RBs at the 12th-lowest rate last year, which doesn’t help Barkley’s case. This is before we mention Jalen Hurts‘ prowess at the goal line, having 16 rush attempts inside the 5-yard line (eighth-most) while converting 13 into touchdowns.
The Lions didn’t receive much praise for the perceived reach of Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2023 NFL Draft, but a little over a year later, it’s clear they made a good choice. Unfortunately for Gibbs, though, David Montgomery is still in Detroit and will be capping Gibbs’ upside for the near future.
The Lions continue to say they plan on running a committee between Montgomery and Gibbs in 2024. It makes sense to do so, given their abilities mesh well. Montgomery led the backfield in touches last year with 17.3 per game to Gibbs’s 15.8. He also led the pair with 4.0 evaded tackles per game compared to Gibbs, who had 3.5.
Gibbs produced explosive runs, with a massive 8.88% big run rate, which dwarfed Montgomery’s 3.83%. Still, the Lions preferred Montgomery at the goal line which kept him very fantasy-relevant. Gibbs deserves to go around the end of the first round or early in the second, but not this high in drafts.
