News & Notes
Ryan Helsley and Emmanuel Clase are the two lone closers to have at least 40 saves on the season.
Josh Hader allowed his first earned runs of August on Friday. The last time he allowed an earned run was July 29.
Edwin Diaz allowed home runs in back-to-back appearances earlier in the week. Before that, he had not allowed a home run since May 18.
David Bednar was removed from his closer role. Pirates manager Derek Shelton said the role will be filled by a committee of relievers while Bednar gets work in low-leverage spots. Aroldis Chapman is worth a look, but he isn’t officially the closer for Pittsburgh.
Camilo Doval was recalled last Saturday, but Ryan Walker remains the closer. Doval has earned a hold and a win since being recalled.
