Golf is a game rooted in humble beginnings on the windswept dunes of coastal Scotland. It is a maddening and exhilarating paradox, with mood swings that change like the Scottish weather. Every summer, the best in the world are welcomed back to the sacred ground for The British Open.
The golfers are teleported back in time with their modern technology and training to determine the Champion Golfer of the Year. Strike the rock with the stick and try to sink it in the rabbit hole in the fewest strokes possible. In a way, nothing has changed. Links golf is pure. It is exposed to the elements and dares the players to lose focus on the Claret Jug glistening across the lava beds of hell.

Major championship golf concludes for the year at Royal Troon, a course where the devil sneers on both shoulders. The track is a par-71 of average length at just under 7,400 yards. The outward six holes (heaven) are often downwind and offer some scoring opportunities to part the clouds. The next six holes (purgatory) jut through the briars and brambles and feature “The Postage Stamp” and “The Railway,” two of the most daunting holes on the Open rota when the wind is whipping.
The final homeward six holes (hell) run into the teeth of the prevailing wind and have tarnished the chances of many golfers with prayers of wings and halos and their name engraved on the Claret Jug. The entire golf bag will be tested. Avoiding bogeys through scrambling around these specks of greens will be the strongest correlation to building my DFS player pool.
Since the wind can freshen to two clubs or more at any time, I must also filter those stats for moderate or stronger conditions. Leveraging the field was not as difficult as expected for a major tournament. My player pool was also quite a bit narrower than I thought it would be. The best plays are the best plays this week.
