Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Rankings & Waiver Pickups (Week 16)

Now that the season is halfway done you should be grinding two-start pitchers to give you an advantage over your competition.

Each week, I will give you a breakdown of the two-start options for your fantasy leagues broken up into the following tiers:

  • Must Start: Pitchers you have to start because of their talent/matchups.
  • Should Start: Pitchers rostered in most formats and who should probably be in your lineup.
  • Here We Go: Pitchers you are probably starting in most formats but who come with some level of risk.
  • Feeling Lucky: Pitchers available in less than 25% of leagues that are risky but viable in deeper formats.
  • Desperate Measures: Pitchers you shouldn’t use unless you have no choice.

These projected two-start pitchers are subject to change and will throughout the season.

Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Week 16

Must Start

Should Start

Dean Kremer (SP – BAL) vs. CHC, vs. NYY

Dean Kremer came back from the injured list (IL) and looked pretty good in his first start, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing two runs and two walks while striking out eight. He has two tough matchups, but they are both at home where the dimensions of Oracle Park at Camden Yards help protect him from home runs. The Yankees start is tough, but the Cubs one is pretty juicy and he should be picked up in most formats.

Christian Scott (SP – NYM) at PIT, vs. COL

Christian Scott returned from the IL and pitched fairly well until the last inning. He has two fantastic matchups here versus a mediocre Pittsburgh lineup and a bad Rockies one away from Coors Field. You are using him in all formats.

Mitchell Parker (SP – WAS) vs. STL, at MIL

Mitchell Parker’s last start was bumpy, but before that, he had been pretty reliable as a starter. He is facing two teams that are worse offensively versus left-handed pitching than they are against righties.

Ben Lively (SP, RP – CLE) at DET, at TB

Ben Lively is not an overpowering starter by any stretch of the imagination, but he does a good job limiting walks and blow-up outings. He is facing two anemic offenses in the Tigers and the Rays, so this is a pretty easy two-step to take advantage of.

Here We Go

Cal Quantrill (SP – COL) at CIN, at NYM

Cal Quantrill has been pretty good this season, especially on the road, throwing 55.1 innings with a 3.58 ERA away from Coors Field this season. He has two matchups that can be dangerous against a hot Mets offense and a Reds team in Cincinnati that can do damage, but he has been pretty reliable when not at home.

Jordan Hicks (RP, SP – SF) vs. TOR, vs. MIN

Jordan Hicks has been up and down this season, posting 90.2 innings with a 3.47 ERA, but a 1.32 WHIP. These are tougher matchups even with the Blue Jays struggling because Toronto is good at taking walks. Hicks has had an uptick in strikeouts, but there is some risk here.

Miles Mikolas (SP – STL) at WAS, vs. CHC

Miles Mikolas is always risky because of the amount of contact he pitches to, but he has two nice matchups versus a mediocre Nationals offense and a bad Cubs one. You won’t get many strikeouts, but he can deliver good ratios when he’s not unlucky.

Colin Rea (SP – MIA) vs. PIT, vs. WAS

Do I believe in what Colin Rea has done this season? No, but he continues to pitch well enough to get through outings and the Brewers provide a ton of run support, which means he is in line for wins often.

Feeling Lucky

Brayan Bello (SP – BOS) vs. OAK, vs. KC

Brayan Bello has struggled as of late, but he gets a great matchup versus a bad A’s offense to start the week. However, he has a much tougher matchup versus the Royals. This is a high-risk/high-reward play.

Luis Ortiz (RP, SP – PIT) vs. NYM, at CWS

Luis Ortiz has moved out of the pen and into the rotation because he has pitched so well. The back half of this matchup is juicy enough that there is a lot of reason to risk the front half, but Ortiz has yet to show he can go deep into games, so the win potential is lessened.

Carlos Rodon (SP – NYY) at TB, at BAL

Carlos Rodon has been going through a rough patch recently, which worries me that something is wrong health-wise, but the strikeouts and velocity are still there. I am not worried about the Tampa start. At least the Baltimore one is in Oracle Park at Camden Yards, but there is some risk here.

Yusei Kikuchi (SP – TOR) at SF, at ARI

Yusei Kikuchi has struggled lately, but he rebounded nicely in his last outing. He has two nice matchups in good pitching parks but there is always a risk with Kikuchi because of his ability to lose his command and control at times.

Desperate Measures
