Jameson Taillon (SP – CHC)

“Jameson Taillon is surging right now, and he may have just opened up a nice little sell-high window for you with this week’s win over the Orioles. Not only did he toss a quality start and earn a win over one of the best offenses in baseball, but he also dropped his ERA below 3.00 in the process. Through two starts in July, he has a 2.77 ERA with a .174 AVG, .191 OBP, and .215 wOBA against. With pitching finally regressing around the league, managers in most fantasy formats are looking for pitching depth. With Taillon outperforming most of his underlying metrics while also having just 72 strikeouts over 87 1/3 IP, I’m definitely looking to move him for a hot hitter like Mark Vientos or Alec Burleson that another manager might not necessarily believe in.”

Byron Buxton (OF – MIN)

“I am shopping Byron Buxton with the pushiness of a used car salesman who needs to sell a 2007 Chevy Impala before it breaks down again. The oft-injured outfielder is on a tear, getting 11 hits in his last 23 at-bats and looking like he just rolled out of the dealership. But it’s a mirage. His current batting average of .282 is 30 points higher than his expected, and his xwOBA is also primed for regression. However, more than any of that, you don’t want to rely on Buxton to get you to a championship, just like you’re not taking that 2007 Impala on a cross-country road trip. Could you make it? Sure. Are you more likely to get stranded 100 miles from the nearest auto shop in the middle of Nebraska? We both know the answer. I’d take a young pitcher with upside like Tobias Meyers in exchange, or even just a mid-round draft pick. But whatever the return… Sell, sell, sell! ”

“Max Scherzer is still a big-name pitcher, and there’s a chance he could be dealt in the weeks to come if the Rangers fade out of the race. Scherzer’s K rate is lagging behind career norms, and he just hasn’t looked like his old dominant self since returning from the IL. Instead, he just looks, well, old. ”
