Welcome to the FantasyPros Week 17 starting pitcher rankings for 2024. On Fridays, we view the upcoming week and rank starting pitchers based on their talent and the team they play against. These rankings are for Monday, July 22, through Sunday, July 28.
These rankings use expert consensus rankings (ECR) as a starting point. Matchup information can be found in the helpful Pitcher Planner’s resource for probable pitchers.
As usual, remember that some starts are projected over a week in advance. Dates can change due to rain, injuries, or anything else. Two-start weeks pitchers often end up as one-start weeks.

Top 50 Starting Pitcher Rankings: Week 17
Best Matchups
- Logan Gilbert continues to impress. The workhouse leads the majors with 132.1 innings thrown, accumulating a 2.79 ERA and a 0.87 WHIP (first-place among qualified pitchers). The Mariners stud should bolster his numbers in a probable two-start week against the Angels and White Sox, who have a combined 68-126 record.
- Blake Snell has always been known as a second-half hero. Fantasy managers should feel very good about the reigning Cy Young winner after he entered the All-Star break throwing seven scoreless innings, creating a 12-inning scoreless streak. The Giants pitcher seems to be finding a groove. Start him confidently against the Rockies at home and look forward to a big second half.
- Justin Steele battled a hamstring injury that sidelined him earlier this year but is far past it. The 29-year-old has thrown seven consecutive quality starts. He hasn’t been charged a loss since early June. Steele is steadily moving up the weekly rankings and a good performance against the Brewers will surely move the Cubs star into the top-30.
Unfavorable Matchups
- Seth Lugo’s ERA of 2.48 is the fourth-best qualified in baseball. His expected ERA of 3.93? Not quite. Lugo’s 3.31 FIP? Almost a run higher than his ERA. Both of these stats point to negative regression. Some regression may occur against the Cubs, who Lugo has a career ERA of 5.26 against.
- Tanner Houck is a great pitcher with a tough schedule this week. It happens. Cautiously start the ace as he faces the Yankees and heads to Colorado to face the Rockies. The Rockies’ Coors Field is notorious for allowing easy home runs in Denver’s low-pressure mile-high altitude. The temperature in Denver for the game is supposed to be in the high 70s, so heat will not contribute to the woes. Even so, be careful. Coors Field should strike fear in the hearts of fantasy managers, and the 58-40 Yankees are a scary team to pitch against.
- Nick Lodolo is on a cold streak. Despite having a 3.33 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, the Cincinnati flamethrower has a 6.23 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in his last three starts. Surprisingly, this disappointing performance has been against lackluster teams – Miami, Colorado and Boston. Fantasy managers should probably bench Lodolo against his upcoming lackluster opponent: Tampa Bay.
Top 50 Pitchers (7/22 – 7/28)
Dodgers’ ace Tyler Glasnow is expected to return from the Injured List (lower back tightness) and play the Red Sox, then the Astros. However, no starts are confirmed. Glasnow’s uncertain health causes a lowered ranking.
