Fantasy Baseball Buy Low Targets

What one MLB player are you trying to buy low right now and why? Also, who would you try to get in return?

Fernando Tatis Jr. (OF – SD)

“Depending on need, I’d be inquiring about the price of Fernando Tatis Jr. The outfielder has been on the IL since June 22 and will not play in the All-Star Game after being voted a starter. Perhaps the Tatis manager is worried about his performance when he returns. Or maybe the manager has a glaring need that you can fill. His expected stats indicate that we should see some improvement in his numbers, assuming he returns to health. His xSLG is 85 points higher than his current (.553!), and his xwOBA is the seventh-highest in MLB. Again, depending on need, I’m willing to give up someone like Trea Turner for him at this juncture.”

Cody Bellinger (OF – CHC)

Cody Bellinger hasn’t lived up to his 2023 contract year campaign, which isn’t surprising. However, the power is still there and he could be a major bat dealt to a contender in the coming weeks. He’s better than the .734 OPS he’s posted so far, but probably not as prolific as last year’s .881 OPS. Somewhere in between and on a contender makes Bellinger a valuable second-half fantasy asset.”

Marcus Semien (2B – TEX)

Marcus Semien – Since June 1st, he’s put up the 4th worst BABIP in baseball at just over .200, and on the season, that total is about 40 points lower than his career average. He picks it up in the second half, and we just saw him launch a home run the other day. This is a good time to buy on Semien.”

Bo Bichette (SS – TOR)

“If you’re only looking at metrics, there isn’t a very strong case to buy low on Bo Bichette. In fact, I have seen Bichette getting dropped in some leagues, which was unthinkable back in March when we were drafting these teams. He’s a mess, and fantasy managers who drafted him better have been perfect for the rest of their draft; otherwise, they likely aren’t contending right now. And that’s half of the case for buying low on Bichette: he’s either free or essentially free right now. And while he has been bad, we’ve seen his near-elite ceiling. Sometimes, the All-Star Break can do magical things. It’s a full reset. Players who were hot end up falling off after the break. Players who look a lot like Bichette looks right now get hot and look more like themselves the rest of the way. Unless he’s battling an injury, I don’t believe Bichette just forgot how to be a good hitter. Given the price tag, I’m buying Bichette and seeing if he can turn things around over the next few weeks. ”

Fantasy Baseball Sell High Targets

What one MLB player are you trying to sell high right now, and why? Also, who would you try to get in return?

Byron Buxton (OF – MIN)

“I am shopping Byron Buxton with the pushiness of a used car salesman who needs to sell a 2007 Chevy Impala before it breaks down again. The oft-injured outfielder is on a tear, getting 11 hits in his last 23 at-bats and looking like he just rolled out of the dealership. But it’s a mirage. His current batting average of .282 is 30 points higher than his expected, and his xwOBA is also primed for regression. However, more than any of that, you don’t want to rely on Buxton to get you to a championship, just like you’re not taking that 2007 Impala on a cross-country road trip. Could you make it? Sure. Are you more likely to get stranded 100 miles from the nearest auto shop in the middle of Nebraska? We both know the answer. I’d take a young pitcher with upside like Tobias Meyers in exchange, or even just a mid-round draft pick. But whatever the return… Sell, sell, sell! ”

Max Scherzer (SP – TEX)

Max Scherzer is still a big-name pitcher, and there’s a chance he could be dealt in the weeks to come if the Rangers fade out of the race. They have Tyler Mahle and Jacob deGrom inching back from surgeries, so they could even deal Scherzer and still sell to the fanbase they’re competing for a wild card spot. Scherzer’s K rate is lagging behind career norms, and he just hasn’t looked like his old dominant self since returning from the IL. Instead, he just looks, well, old. ”
Joe Pisapia (FantasyPros)

Shota Imanaga (SP – CHC)

Shota Imanaga – Since June 1, he has a five-plus ERA. Even worse, he has a .279 batting average, which is top-10 worst in that period, and an under 60% LOB% (left on base), which is horrible. Some things can regress in his favor, but I am selling the all-star name value of Shota right now.”
Christopher Welsh (FantasyPros)

Jameson Taillon (SP – CHC)

Jameson Taillon is surging right now, and he may have just opened up a nice little sell-high window for you with this week’s win over the Orioles. Not only did he toss a quality start and earn a win over one of the best offenses in baseball, but he also dropped his ERA below 3.00 in the process. Through two starts in July, he has a 2.77 ERA with a .174 AVG, .191 OBP, and .215 wOBA against. With pitching finally regressing around the league, managers in most fantasy formats are looking for pitching depth. With Taillon outperforming most of his underlying metrics while also having just 72 strikeouts over 87 1/3 IP, I’m definitely looking to move him for a hot hitter like Mark Vientos or Alec Burleson that another manager might not necessarily believe in.”
