Top 8 Fantasy Baseball FAAB Waiver Wire Pickups: High-Stakes Leagues (Week 13)

Top 8 Fantasy Baseball FAAB Waiver Wire Pickups: High-Stakes Leagues (Week 13)

The best players in the world play on NFBC and the most popular high-stakes contest is the NFBC Main Event, which has a $1,750 buy-in with a $7,000 league prize and a $200,000 overall prize. Thankfully, for everyone, NFBC allows us to see what each team is doing with their FAAB pickups on Sunday night.

Each week, I look at the most popular fantasy baseball waiver wire and FAAB pickups in the NFBC Main Event to see who the best players in the world are picking up and whether we should add them.

Fantasy Baseball FAAB Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 13

DJ Herz (SP – WAS)

DJ Herz was the most added player in NFBC Main Event leagues. He was picked up in 51 leagues with a maximum bid of $131 and a minimum bid of $1. Part of Herz’s allure was his dominant performance on Sunday where he threw six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 13 in the victory over the Marlins. Herz is an interesting prospect with a dominant changeup, but he has struggled with command throughout his time in the minors. There is a lot of upside in his arm, but there is a fair amount of risk, too.

Tyler Soderstrom (C, 1B – OAK)

Tyler Soderstrom was a popular pickup after a massive week in which he hit four home runs with a .370/.433/.815 triple slash line in 30 plate appearances. He was picked up in 50 leagues with a maximum bid of $126 and a minimum bid of $1. This is just a crazy hot streak, but Soderstrom does have a ton of power and the underlying skills aren’t bad outside of the strikeout rate. He has more value in leagues where he still has catcher eligibility, but there is still value in other formats as well.

Yariel Rodriguez (RP, SP – TOR)

Yariel Rodriguez was picked up in 49 Main Event leagues with a maximum bid of $95 and a minimum bid of $7. Rodriguez is working his way back from an injury but is expected to be activated this week to start against the Guardians. Rodriguez has been dominant in AAA this season and pretty good in his brief Major League time but hasn’t been going deep enough into games to qualify for wins. If he can start to go deeper, there is a ton of upside.

Carson Spiers (RP, SP – CIN)

Carson Spiers was picked up in 47 leagues with a maximum bid of $43 and a minimum bid of $2. Spiers was a typical two-start streaming pickup. The first start went fine, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk. He gets the Red Sox later this week. He is a low upside play in a bad park after this week and is not super interesting outside of deeper leagues.

Jacob Stallings (C – COL)

Jacob Stallings was picked up in 47 leagues with a maximum bid of $29 and a minimum bid of $1. With Elias Diaz out with an injury, Stallings becomes the main catcher in Colorado, who has seven games at home this week. Other than that, he is a low-end C2.

Drew Thorpe (SP – CWS)

Drew Thorpe was another pitching prospect who was called up this week, being picked up in 44 leagues with a maximum bid of $116 and a minimum bid of $2. Thorpe is a really interesting arm who had a nice debut and then got destroyed in his second start. He has a lot of upside but if he struggles with control and being too hittable the upside disappears, especially on the White Sox.

Chad Green (RP – TOR)

Chad Green was picked up in 43 leagues with a maximum bid of $60 and a minimum bid of $3. Yimi Garcia is dealing with an injury and Green is likely the next man up for saves in Toronto.

Ryne Stanek (RP – SEA)

Ryne Stanek has also been the main closer in Seattle recently which is why he was picked up in 37 leagues with a maximum bid of $261 and a minimum bid of $1. Stanek may not be the main closer once Andres Munoz is fully over his back issue, but for now, he is and should be treated as such for the time being.
