As usual, remember that some starts are projected over a week in advance. Dates can change due to rain, injuries or anything else. Two-start weeks often end up as one-start weeks.
Sometimes it is best to treat a second start as a pleasant surprise rather than an expectation, especially due to rain. Be sure to check the Pitcher Planner later on for more up-to-date information.
Top 50 Starting Pitcher Rankings: Week 14
Best Matchups
- Paul Skenes (PIT) looks untouchable. The phenom has not so much as faltered in seven major league starts. It’s getting ridiculous at this point. Start Skenes with confidence, unless he begins to perform otherwise.
- Matt Waldron (SD) is reminding us not to overlook the knuckleball. The unique Padres starter is amidst a late-career breakout. After a slow start, the 27-year-old is on a rampage of five consecutive quality starts, including his most recent outing where he held the Phillies to just one run in seven innings. Start the blast from the past for his two-start week against Washington and Boston.
- Hunter Brown (HOU) has been good lately. This upgrade is a shock to many. Brown has laughed in the face of the analysts who counted him out, stringing together six consecutive quality starts. How is he doing it after having a 9.78 ERA in his first six starts of the year? It seems beyond science. Fantasy managers should start Brown at home against the Rockies. He is living up to his potential.
Unfavorable Matchups
- Gerrit Cole (NYY) won the American League Cy Young last year. He’s a great pitcher who is simply rusty. Elbow injuries are always something to frown over. Although fantasy managers should start Cole for his two-start week, they should reel in their expectations as he tries to get into a groove.
- Luis Gil (NYY) is human. His horrendous outing at home against Baltimore showed the mortal side to the former American League ERA leader. The youngster allowed seven runs to the Baltimore offense in just 1.1 innings. There is no reason to believe Gil’s next start will be even remotely as bad, but his confidence is undoubtedly shaken. Exercise caution as he faces the Mets, who have won eight of their last 10 games.
- Kevin Gausman (TOR) does not look like the ace of years past. He threw a complete game shutout two weeks ago and has struggled in both of his starts after. Gausman is yet to establish any reliability in 2024. Fantasy managers should be worried as he faces divisional opponents in the Red Sox and Yankees.
- Jared Jones (PIT) seemed like the next big thing until he wasn’t. The rookie has an ERA of 5.34 since May 16. His road bump is partially attributed to an increase in walks — Jones has distributed 15 free passes in his last five starts. Jones will continue to slide down the rankings until he improves. He takes this cold streak into a scary matchup facing Atlanta.
