As usual, remember that some starts are projected over a week in advance. Dates can change due to rain, injuries or anything else. Two-start week pitchers often end up as one-start weeks.
Sometimes it is best to treat a second start as a pleasant surprise rather than an expectation, especially due to rain. Be sure to check the Pitcher Planner later on for more up-to-date information.
Top 50 Starting Pitcher Rankings: Week 12
Best Matchups
- Max Fried gathered a season-high 13 strikeouts against the Red Sox on June 4. His past three starts include a complete game vs. the Cubs and eight scoreless innings against the Nationals. Look for Fried to continue this streak against the Rays, who sit near the bottom of the American League East.
- Carlos Rodon has won six games in a row and earned nine quality starts this year (out of 13 chances). Rodon has ignored the fancy analytics so far. Although his advanced stats suggest regression, including a 4.21 expected ERA compared to a 3.08 actual ERA, the lefty continues to dominate. The bounce-back veteran is on a hot streak and should have a good two-start week in Kansas City and Boston.
- Cristopher Sanchez is a mainstay of the National League leader’s rotation. The Phillies breakout star has a 2.71 ERA, aided by improved control and only allowing one homer all year. Despite somewhat lackluster strikeouts, Sanchez has been fun to watch all year. It will be exciting to see how he does against Boston. Fantasy managers should claim the 27-year-old southpaw if he is available.
Unfavorable Matchups
- Chris Sale went 5-0 with an ERA of 0.56 and 45 strikeouts in five starts (32 innings) in May. He opened June by allowing eight runs to the A’s. It may be hard for the left-handed ace to bounce back against the Orioles, who have an OPS of .806 when facing lefties.
- Seth Lugo is a great pitcher in the middle of a wonderful year. Sadly, he is coming off the worst start of his season and has to face the Yankees and Dodgers. Those are not the teams a fantasy manager wants their pitcher to play against.
- Pablo Lopez entered 2024 as a prime Cy Young candidate. The 28-year-old is yet to live up to the lofty expectations. Lopez has allowed 24 runs on 35 hits and 10 walks in his past five starts. These disastrous numbers have occurred in 27 innings of work where Lopez notched 24 strikeouts. It is far too early to give up on the pitcher, and perhaps easy starts against Oakland and Colorado will fix him, but things have been grim.
- Bailey Ober’s season has been less disappointing than Pablo Lopez’s, though disappointing nonetheless. Ober lines up to face Oakland this week. Hopefully, it will help him recover. He is in the middle of a four-start period where he allowed 16 runs on 24 hits and eight walks in 19 innings. It could be a good idea to bench Ober until he gets his act together, even against Oakland.
