Wells Fargo Championship: One-and-Done Picks & Predictions

For our latest one-and-done picks and predictions, we’re heading to Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship held at Quail Hollow Club. This is the sixth Signature Event played on the PGA Tour this season and it’ll be without World No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, as he’s expecting his first child to be born any day now.

69 golfers who managed to qualify with top finishes or outright wins are set to tee it off at this cut-free Signature Event. Precision off-the-tee and on approach are key, as there are plenty of water hazards and narrow fairways to conquer. In this article, we’ll label and analyze several golfers who deserve consideration in one-and-done leagues and survivor contests.

Big Guns

Rory McIlroy
A three-time winner at the Wells Fargo Championship, Rory McIlroy is riding high off of his team win with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic. McIlroy hasn’t been stellar playing in the traditional solo format this season though, so despite his previous accomplishments at Quail Hollow Club, use caution before deploying him as your one-and-done pick this week.

Wyndham Clark
The defending champion, Wyndham Clark, broke through with his first career PGA Tour win at Quail Hollow in 2023. Since then, Clark has gone on to add two more wins, including an outright victory at Pebble Beach earlier this year. He’s also had several runner-up finishes, including a brutal in-and-out birdie putt on the 72nd hole during The PLAYERS Championship, which was also a Signature Event.

Secondary Options

Max Homa
Max Homa has won the Wells Fargo Championship twice since 2019, so he’s one of the betting favorites this week at Quail Hollow. Homa’s best outing came at Augusta National, contending late into Sunday before a bad tee shot on a par 3 derailed his momentum. He’s clearly comfortable playing at this course, so if you still have Homa available, he’s a strong prospect to use this week.

Tommy Fleetwood
Still searching for his first outright win on the PGA Tour, Englishman Tommy Fleetwood is one of the best players when it comes to the driver. He’s accurate and can stripe the ball far, creating good lies to give himself numerous birdie and eagle opportunities. Fleetwood recorded a T5 finish at this event in 2023, so he’s certainly another strong candidate to consider using in survivor leagues.

Sneaky Plays

Sahith Theegala
Sahith Theegala had a forgettable debut at Quail Hollow in 2023, winding up T56, going over par in two of four rounds. In 2023, he’s ranked 21st strokes gained: off-the-tee, 38th strokes gained: approaching the green, and eighth strokes gained: putting. This qualifies him as a great sneaky play to deploy in one-and-done formats at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Matt Fitzpatrick
T35 and T2 finishes have been the final results for Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick at Quail Hollow in 2023 and 2022. He’s had a bit of a down year, but Fitzpatrick does rank 28th strokes gained: putting and can hunt flagsticks with his irons when he’s dialed in. Ranking 12th total driving and 31st going for the green, Fitzpatrick is another sneaky play this week.

Favorite One-And-Done: Brendon Todd

Believe it or not, Brendon Todd, who oddsmakers value at 170-1 in the outright winner betting market, is my favorite one-and-done golfer to use at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. Todd ranks inside the top-40 for strokes gained: around-the-green and top-20 strokes gained: putting. Previous finishes of T8 in 2023 and T18 in 2019, further solidify the case to appoint Todd as a fantastic one-and-done golfer at Quail Hollow ahead of Thursday’s opening round.
