PGA Championship: One-and-Done Picks & Predictions

The 2024 PGA Championship is set to tee off from Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky on Thursday hosting the second major of the PGA Tour season.

In this article, we’re previewing several golfers in the field of 156 who are worth using in one-and-done leagues and survivor contests at Valhalla. The player ideally wins outright, however, managers playing in this format receive points based on where their golfer winds up finishing in the event. The lower the score and higher finishing position on the leaderboard, means more points will be earned.

Big Guns

Scottie Scheffler
The World No. 1 is back in action after celebrating the birth of his first child, son Bennett. Now, Scottie Scheffler looks to extend his winning streak to three consecutive events. He won the first major at Augusta National to earn his second green jacket at The Masters, while following it up with another outright win at the RBC Heritage, which was a Signature Event. Ranking first in nearly every strokes gained category except putting, we should see Scheffler put on a clinic at this lengthy par 71 course.

Rory McIlroy
The last time Rory McIlroy won a major, it was at Valhalla in 2014. Much has changed since then, but McIlroy is playing great golf right now, earning his fourth outright win at Quail Hollow during a late surge at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday. This comes on the heels of McIlroy’s outright win with teammate, Shane Lowry, at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. McIlroy is potent gaining strokes off-the-tee, so he’s certainly a viable option to roll out if you still have him available.

Secondary Options

Brooks Koepka
Mr. PGA Championship himself, Brooks Koepka, looks to add his fourth PGA Championship win since 2018 this week. Koepka is coming off of a win at LIV Singapore and went back-to-back at this major in 2018 and 2019, albeit at different courses than Valhalla. Still, he’s a powerful driver and has good touch around the greens, making him worth the investment in one-and-done formats, previously recording a T15 finish at Valhalla Golf Club in 2014.

Xander Schauffele
Despite not being able to hold a lead on Sunday this season, we’ve seen Xander Schauffele perform very well in virtually all other aspects of his game in 2024. He’s particularly talented off-the-tee and on approach, which is what Valhalla demands, so don’t worry about a late slump, since the Californian has recorded eight top-ten finishes and made the cut at all 12 events he’s played this year.

Sneaky Plays

Collin Morikawa
Collin Morikawa contended at The Masters briefly in the final round before Scheffler began outpacing him and all others in the field. It’s important to remember that Morikawa has a PGA Championship win under his belt, coming in 2020 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California. It’s been a mediocre run at this major since 2020, going T8, T55, and T26, but Morikawa is 29th strokes gained off-the-tee, giving him some value at Valhalla this week.

Justin Thomas
Louisville native, Justin Thomas, is rounding into form with a T5 and T21 at each of the PGA Tour’s recent Signature Events played. He beat Will Zalatoris at Southern Hills C.C. in 2022 during a playoff, and he’s also logged 15 career wins on the PGA Tour. Ranked 31st in total strokes gained, including 12th on approach, 21st in driving distance, and 26th around the green, Thomas is looking more like the old version of himself, which is good news for one-and-done leagues if he remains available to insert this week at Valhalla.

Favorite One-And-Done: Byeong Hun-An

South Korean native Byeong Hun-An is riding a heater with his play on the golf course over the last few events. Producing finishes of T4 and T3 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and Wells Fargo Championship, a T16 at the first major held at Augusta National bodes well for An at this event. He’s ranked 21st in total strokes gained, including 21st off-the-tee and tee-to-green, whole also 16th in total driving. An is a great asset to deploy at Valhalla this week, as he could wind up with his first top-20 finish at this major.
