Friday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Walker Buehler (LAD) vs. COL
Walker Buehler hasn't been perfect in his return from Tommy John surgery. Nevertheless, his underlying data has many encouraging nuggets, and he has a Charmin-soft matchup. According to FanGraphs, in four starts spanning 19.0 innings this year, Buehler has a 4.26 ERA, 3.71 xERA, 3.49 SIERA, 1.21 WHIP, 3.8 BB%, 21.8 K%, 26.3 CSW%, 96 Stuff+, 101 Location+ and 100 Pitching+. His ERA estimators were better than his ERA, and he can regress to those marks in a dreamy matchup.

This season, the Rockies are 28th in wRC+ (82) with a 25.9 K% versus righties and tied for 24th in wRC+ (87) with a 25.3 K% on the road. They were also 21st in wRC+ (91) with a 21.7 K% in the previous 14 days. The betting info is also ideal. The Dodgers are -305, and the game's total is 8.5 runs.

Jose Berrios (TOR) vs. PIT
Jose Berrios has loved pitching in Canada. In 19 starts totaling 116.2 innings at home since last year, Berrios has had a 2.93 ERA, 3.81 xFIP, 1.11 WHIP, 6.1 BB% and 24.3 K%. He also had 12 quality starts in those 19 turns.

Berrios can continue his dominance in Canada in a plus matchup tonight. The Pirates are 27th in wRC+ (84) with a 24.7 K% versus righties and tied for 21st in wRC+ (90) with a 26.3 K% on the road. In the previous 14 days, they were tied for 17th in wRC+ (97) with a juicy 27.4 K%. Thus, the Blue Jays are -165, and the game's total is 8.5 runs.

Jose Soriano (LAA) at SEA

Jose Soriano has successfully transitioned from the bullpen to the rotation. In 11 appearances (nine starts) spanning 52.1 innings this year, Soriano has a 3.61 ERA, 3.58 xERA and 3.68 SIERA. So, his ERA has aligned with his ERA estimators.

He's in even better form lately. In his previous five starts totaling 29.2 innings, Soriano has had a 2.73 ERA, 3.00 xFIP, 3.11 SIERA, 1.04 WHIP, 7.6 BB%, 23.5 K%, 27.9 CSW%, 101 Stuff+, 96 Location+ and 100 Pitching+.

Soriano has a high-upside matchup tonight. The Mariners are 22nd in wRC+ (96) with a 29.2 K% versus righties and 22nd in wRC+ (95) with a 29.7 K% at home in 2024. They were also 25th in wRC+ (82) with a 27.6 K% in the previous 14 days. The Angels are underdogs (+140). Still, the game's total is a pitcher-friendly 7.5 runs.

The Dodgers are a powerhouse. This year, they're second in wRC+ (119) versus righties and third in wRC+ (126) at home. Six of their projected starters have had at least a 104 wRC+ versus righties since 2021, and four have had at least a 124 wRC+.

LA can feast in a mouthwatering matchup. In Dakota Hudson's previous five starts, he's had a 4.56 ERA, 5.34 SIERA, 11.3 BB%, 10.4 K%, 23.8 CSW%, 88 Stuff+, 97 Location+ and 92 Pitching+. Colorado's relievers also have the highest ERA (5.24) in 2024. In fact, they're the only bullpen with an ERA over 5.00.

The Mets haven't had a potent offense this year. Fortunately, they have a get-right matchup against Jordan Montgomery. The veteran lefty hasn't been sharp after missing all of spring training and making his season debut for the Diamondbacks on April 19. In seven starts spanning 40.1 innings in 2024, Montgomery has a 4.69 ERA, 4.61 xERA, 4.68 SIERA, 1.41 WHIP, 7.1 BB%, 14.2 K% and 25.6 CSW%.

While the Mets haven't been good at the plate this year, their projected lineup has succeeded against southpaws. Eight of their projected starters have had at least a 104 wRC+ against lefties since 2021, and five have had at least a 120 wRC+. Finally, Arizona's bullpen is below average, enhancing New York's ceiling.

• Shohei Ohtani has hit 14 homers and stolen 13 bases with a .395 OBP, .285 ISO, 187 wRC+ and .457 xwOBA in 249 plate appearances this season.
• Since 2021, Freddie Freeman has had a .419 OBP, .212 ISO and 160 wRC+ against righties.
• J.D. Martinez has a track record of success against lefties and has hit at an above-average clip this season. In 118 plate appearances in his age-36 campaign, he's hit four homers with a .316 OBP, .173 ISO and 122 wRC+.

Value Plays/Punts

• Joey Ortiz continues to be underpriced at DK and FD. In 161 plate appearances in a breakout 2024 season, he has hit five homers and stolen two bases with a .381 OBP, .215 ISO and 150 wRC+.
• After a slow start, rookie Colt Keith tore the cover off the ball in May. In 76 plate appearances this month, he's had a .395 OBP, .116 ISO and 147 wRC+.
• In 131 career plate appearances against lefties, Mark Vientos hit five homers with a .298 OBP, .207 ISO and 109 wRC+. Additionally, in 48 plate appearances this year, he has a .354 OBP, .295 ISO and 171 wRC+.

Freeman can also take advantage of a soft matchup, and his fantasy scoring correlates with Ohtani's.
