Wednesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
Luis Gil (NYY) at LAA
According to FanGraphs, Luis Gil's 2.78 xERA in 10 starts this season is the second-lowest mark among tonight's probable starters. The young righty is also in superb form. In his previous five starts spanning 30.2 innings, Gil has had a 0.59 ERA, 3.11 xFIP, 3.14 SIERA, 0.72 WHIP, 8.8 BB%, 31.0 K%, 27.0 CSW%, 107 Stuff+, 99 Location+ and 104 Pitching+.
Gil can stay hot in an average matchup. This season, the Angels are tied for 19th in wRC+ (96) with a 23.7 K% against righties and 12th in wRC+ (106) with a 24.9 K% at home. In addition, the Yankees are -185, and the game's total is 8.5 runs.
Justin Verlander (HOU) at SEA
Justin Verlander's 2024 campaign has been up and down. Still, he's had four quality starts in seven opportunities and struck out at least eight batters in two of his previous three starts. The veteran righty has sandwiched DFS-friendly starts around a clunker.
Tonight's matchup can bring the best out of Verlander. This year, the Mariners are tied for 19th in wRC+ (96) with an exploitable 28.7 K% against righties and tied for 21st in wRC+ (97) with a bloated 28.7 K% at home. They were also tied for 20th in wRC+(89) with a 25.5 K% in the previous 14 days. Seattle's penchant for punching out elevates Verlander's floor and ceiling. The Astros are slight underdogs (-105), but the game's total is a pitcher-friendly 7.0 runs.
Spencer Schwellenbach (ATL) vs. WAS
Spencer Schwellenbach is making his big-league debut tonight. The young righty has pitched only 13.0 innings above High-A. Nevertheless, Schwellenbach has dominated in High-A and Double-A this season. In six starts spanning 32.0 innings at the former, Schwellenbach had a 2.53 ERA, 3.13 xFIP, 1.09 WHIP, 6.9 BB%, 26.0 K% and 14.6 SwStr%. In two starts totaling 13.0 innings at the latter, Schwellenbach had a 0.00 ERA, 1.63 xFIP, 0.46 WHIP, 2.3 BB%, 38.6 K%, 54.2 GB% and 17.8 SwStr%.
He could wilt under the bright lights. However, Schwellenbach has a favorable matchup in his first big-league opportunity. The Nationals are tied for 19th in wRC+ (96) against righties and tied for 20th in wRC+ (90) on the road this season. In the previous 14 days, Washington was 25th in wRC+ (82) with a 22.5 K%. Thus, the Braves are -155, and the game's total is 8.5 runs.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
The Guardians had an offensive outburst at Coors Field last night and shouldn't slow down tonight in a cushy matchup. Cleveland is tied for second in wRC+ (124) against lefties this season. Meanwhile, Ty Blach is a pitch-to-contact lefty, with a 12.2 K% in his previous five appearances (three starts). His low strikeout rate is a dreadful fit for this matchup and Coors Field.
- Road (T-Mobile Park)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 7.0 Runs/HOU -105
The Astros didn't make good for those who stacked them last night. They have another opportunity against a recently underachieving George Kirby. In Kirby's previous five starts spanning 30.0 innings, he's had a 4.50 ERA, 4.19 SIERA, 0.93 WHIP, 1.7 BB%, 15.7 K%, 8.7 SwStr% and 23.8 CSW%. Kirby has also coughed up 2.10 HR/9 in that stretch.
The Astros can punish his pitch-to-contact approach and penchant for serving up homers. Houston is fifth in wRC+ (115) versus righties this year and seventh in wRC+ (114) in the previous 14 days.
Core Studs
- In 688 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, Jose Ramirez has had a .331 OBP, .223 ISO and 120 wRC+.
- David Fry has lit up lefties. In 112 plate appearances against lefties since debuting in the majors last year, Fry has hit six homers with a .482 OBP, .286 ISO and 204 wRC+.
Value Plays/Punts
- In 387 career plate appearances in Triple-A, Johnathan Rodriguez had a .382 OBP, .230 ISO and 126 wRC+. As a righty, he can exploit Blach's inability to slow down righties. Blach has allowed right-handed batters a .420 wOBA this year after ceding them a .401 wOBA last year.
- In 206 plate appearances against lefties at Coors Field since 2021, Brendan Rodgers has hit seven homers with a .393 OBP, .182 ISO and 124 wRC+.
- Elehuris Montero has also hit well at home with the platoon advantage. In 111 career plate appearances against lefties at home since debuting in the majors in 2022, Montero has had a .324 OBP, .250 ISO, .365 wOBA and 103 wRC+.
- Gavin Sheets is a slightly above-average hitter against righties with a DFS-friendly lineup spot and matchup. Since 2021, he's had a .313 OBP, .185 ISO and 105 wRC+ against righties. Conversely, Alek Manoah has ceded a .390 wOBA to lefties this season after permitting them a .387 wOBA in 2023.

Brendan Rodgers: 1.5 Total Bases - Higher/More
Rodgers is another holdover from the DFS section. He's feasted on southpaws at Coors Field and has a favorable matchup tonight. Logan Allen has yielded 12 doubles, two triples, nine homers, a .304 batting average and .541 slugging to 199 righties this year.
Yordan Alvarez: 7.5 Fantasy Points - Higher (Underdog Fantasy)
Yordan Alvarez: 6.5 Fantasy Points - More (PrizePicks)
