Fantasy Baseball Prospects Report: Jackson Holliday, Junior Caminero, James Wood

Hey friends, welcome to my weekly fantasy baseball prospect report at FantasyPros! The goal of this column is to give you the most fantasy baseball-relevant prospect information throughout the last week, all in one place. The format of this weekly fantasy baseball prospect report will be by level and we will go through players in order of their placing on my latest Top 150 prospect rankings (click here to view). I won’t be hitting every fantasy baseball prospect every week (though I basically did this week), but will focus on the most relevant throughout the week and will follow up on other notable players post my Top 150 rankings. This article will not focus on any AAAA type players or veterans in the minors who have outlived their prospect status.

      • Notes: Pages had a strong spring and is looking to show he’s healthy and ready to rip. He was called up to the Dodgers and has been playing every day, but how long will that last? Until Heyward is back?

      • Notes: Skenes could be a top 25 starter in baseball per batter faced from the gate – his first start is TODAY (Saturday, 5/11) where he was spitting fire, but not very efficient (trying to strike everyone out) and the bullpen didn’t help him by walking the bases loaded a few times behind him.

I believe we will see an adjustment at some point where he tries to put the stuff and the command together.

      • Notes: Scott is looking like a future front of the rotation starter.

      • Notes: Gasser was activated this week for his first start of the season and shut out the struggling Cardinals offense. Let’s see if he can keep the walks down in his next start as well, because the stuff is good – the concern is the control.

AAA Hitters

      • Notes: Junior Caminero is ready for the Majors and ready to destroy. However, is Tampa ready for a player who could win Rookie of the Year?

      • Notes: Holliday is back to destroying AAA ball after the rough initial call up to the majors.

      • This Week: 11/23 | 5 XBH, 3 HR, 1 SB (plus 2 more homers Saturday just before I posted this article for editing)
      • Notes: Wood is showing great discipline and has been hitting the ball hard (mostly on the ground) so far this young season. Wood should be in the majors, but he does need to work on lifting the ball as the GB rate is over 50%.
      • Season: .224/.349/.432 | 14 BB% / 30.7 K%| 13 XBH, 6 HR, 3 SB

      • Notes: Montgomery is not hitting for average, but like PCA when does get hits, he has been doing damage. He needs to reign in the swing and miss.

      • Notes: Acuna is wasting so many ABs by popping up more than 40% of the time according to fangraphs batted ball metrics. He’s making things happen when he gets on base, but he has to put the ball in play more often.

      • Notes: I compare Jung to Nolan Gorman and we can see the profile here at AAA looks pretty similar. Jung is looking to force a call up sooner than originally projected and is doing his best to make it happen.

      • Notes: The Orioles minor league squad is ridiculous between Kjerstad, Mayo and Norby, who is going to make it up into a starting role? Who is for the bench? Who is trade bait? Norby is the Michael Busch of the Orioles and you can see the K rate climbing as he’s just trying to damage to force a promotion.

      • Notes: Durbin is continuing to rake and could be a nice utility player for the Yankees by the All Star Break.

      • Notes: He’s all boom or bust, but has a max EV of over 118 MPH this year, so the dude can kill a baseball – but can he hit enough to make it as a pro?

      • Notes: Nastrini was called up for his first major league start this week and performed pretty well. I’m a big Nastrini guy and think he should stick for the rest of the season.
  • #88 SP Carlos F. Rodriguez (Brewers)
      • Season: 38 2/3 IP | 10.9 K-BB%, 10.5 SwStr% | 6.28 ERA, 1.47 WHIP
      • This Week: 11 IP | 15 Ks, 2 BBs | 1.64 ERA, 0.64 WHIP
      • Notes: Rodriguez won’t be a super star, but could be an effective back end starter for the Brewers, I think he can be a Braxton Garrett type.
      • Season: 33 IP | 15.4 K-BB%, 13.9 SwStr% | 3.00 ERA, 1.48 WHIP
      • This Week: 5 IP | 8 Ks, 1 BBs | 3.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP
      • Notes: McDermott is a high stuff, bad command guy and we are seeing it this year. He has three plus pitches so we can only hope he gets the control in check to be a starter.
  • SP Landon Knack (Dodgers)
      • Season: 20 2/3 IP | 22.8% K-BB rate, 15.9% SwStr% | 3.48 ERA, 1.02 WHIP
      • This Week: 5 IP | 8 Ks, 2 BBs | 1.80 ERA, 1.20 WHIP
      • Notes: Knack had a decent run as a backend starter for the Dodgers, but is likely to be a swing man in the future; however he had a good start in his first run back at AAA.

AA Hitters

      • Season: .236/.317/.458 | 8.4 BB% / 34.9 K%| 8 XBH, 3 HR, 4 SB
      • This Week: 4/16 (w/ 4 BBs) | 3 XBH, 1 HR, 2 SB
      • Notes: Crews is starting to get going, but he really needs to cut the K rate down – it’s killing him.
      • Season: .233/.397/.427 | 19.1 BB% / 19.1 K%| 12 XBH, 4 HR, 8 SB

      • Notes: Interesting to see Ford stealing 4 bases in a week where he didn’t have any luck at the plate.

      • Notes: House has been pretty consistent this season in regards to power, but he had one of his better weeks from an OBP standard..

      • Notes: Mayer is having a way better time at AA this year than last and already has 13 doubles on the season with four this week.

      • This Week: 2/11 (2/ 7 BBs) | 1 XBH, 1 HR, 1 SB
      • Notes: Marsee has had such terrible luck in both organizations this season (.209 BABIP) after being traded to the Marlins in the Arraez trade, however the plate skills and steals are still on point. He can almost be a Tyler Black in the OF.
      • Season: .288/.357/.433 | 9.6 BB% / 17.4 K%| 9 XBH, 2 HR, 2 SB
      • This Week: 8/16 | 1 XBH, 1 HR, 1 SB
      • Notes: Thompson is a very good hitter and looks to be more of a doubles power guy than HR hitter.
      • Season: .250/.289/.472 | 2.6 BB% / 26.3 K%| 4 XBH, 2 HR, 0 SB
      • This Week: 7/21 | 4 XBH, 2 HR, 0 SB
      • Notes: Brock Wilken missed time earlier this year after taking a pitch to the face and dealing with facial fractures, but he’s back with a vengeance.

      • Notes: De Los Santos returned to Arizona and has been destroying baseballs, why is he even in AA still?

      • Notes: Thomas continues to rake and should be close to a AAA call up.

      • Notes: A bit of a comeback this year for Hassell, good to see him finally starting to settle in with the Nationals organization.

      • Notes: Thorpe should be up in the majors sooner, rather than later. My assumption on why he’s in AA, rather than AAA is because they want him throwing to Quero.
      • Season: 23 1/3 IP | 19.8 K-BB%, 15.3 SwStr% | 2.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP
      • This Week: 5 IP | 8 Ks, 4 BBs | 0.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP
      • Notes: Misiorowski is going to be volatile because of his control issues, but if he can reign in the control, he’s going to be unhittable.
      • Season: 26 IP | 11.8 K-BB%, 12.6 SwStr% | 6.58 ERA, 1.69 WHIP
      • This Week: 5 IP | 6 Ks, 1 BBs | 3.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP
      • Notes: Petty has had a rough start to the season after a pretty strong spring, but this was his best start and it looks like he’s ready to get rolling.

      • Notes: Another ridiculously good start from Mazur. The Padres may want Mazur and Snelling to skip AAA and the PCL, so he could be next up in the event of a long-term injury.

      • Notes: Palmquist continues to roll as the entire Rockies pitching prospect squad just keeps dealing.

      • Notes: The Angels are always a team to prompt players quickly, but Dana’s swinging strike rate reminds me of AJ Smith-Shawver last year and that he might not be ready yet.

      • Notes: Tidwell is coming off a week with his best start and his worst start at the same time. The first start he went 8 shutout innings with 9 Ks and the second start he was absolutely smashed.

      • Notes: Vrieling is interesting, I love the Yankees strategy of just starting this guy off in AAA post TJ.

      • Notes: Mason Adams is the hidden gem of the White Sox baller AA rotation, but sooner or later, he’s going to jump out as the star within.

      • Notes: Birdsong was right outside of my Top 150 and he’s showing why this season with some excellent numbers thus far.
      • Season (A+): 39 1/3 IP | 39.1 K-BB%, 14.6% SwStr% | 1.59 ERA, 0.75 WHIP
      • This Week: 6 2/3 IP | 9 Ks, 0 BBs | 0.00 ERA, 0.45 WHIP
      • Notes: This was his first start in AA after getting the bump from A+, but Zebby has been stellar this season and I’m more interested now that he’s at an age appropriate level.
      • Season: 33 2/3 IP | 22.2 K-BB%, 15.7% SwStr% | 4.81 ERA, 1.04 WHIP
      • This Week: 6 IP | 12 Ks, 1 BBs | 4.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP
      • Notes: This is the prime example of why I don’t much care about minor league ERA, he has such good stuff, but still seems to get rocked despite a lower WHIP.

A+ Hitters

      • Season: .253/.351/.474 | 12.6 BB% / 27 K%| 11 XBH, 5 HR, 5 SB
      • This Week: 8/18 | 5 XBH, 2 HR, 1 SB
      • Notes: Isaac had a strong week to bring that batting average closer to normal, this line might be closer to what we can expect with more power moving forward.
      • Season: .313/.374/.417 | 8.4 BB% / 21.5 K%| 5 XBH, 2 HR, 11 SB
      • This Week: 8/16 | 1 XBH, 0 HR, 1 SB
      • Notes: Crawford started the season with a ton of power and has slowed down, but he does keep hitting and as long as he’s hitting and stealing bags he will be valuable.
      • Season: .405/.510/.405 | 17.3 BB% / 11.5 K%| 0 XBH, 0 HR, 13 SB
      • This Week: 8/22 | 0 XBH, 0 HR, 6 SB
      • Notes: For those who don’t know Chandler Simpson is very good friends with Victor Scott II and they had a SB competition last year. He is ready for AA as he continues the foot race.
      • Season: .321/.472/.486 | 21.8 BB% / 19.7 K%| 12 XBH, 2 HR, 11 SB
      • This Week: 7/21 (w/ 8 BBs) | 5 XBH, 0 HR, 2 SB
      • Notes: Jensen is ridiculous and a beast of an athlete for a catcher. The Royals are the masters at developing stud catchers it would seem.

      • Notes: Gelof was promoted to high A this week and did not disappoint in his first week.

      • Notes: Schultz is dominating in the strikeout department, but a little like Misiorowski he needs to reign in the control some to live his best life. We have
    • #99 SP Rhett Lowder (Reds):
      • Season: 25 1/3 IP | 22.5 K-BB%, 15.2 SwStr% | 2.49 ERA, 0.95 WHIP
      • This Week: PROMOTED TO AA
      • Notes: Lowder was called up to AA and there is some talk he could potentially make the majors by the end of the year. I think he was starting as of the day of this writing and did not pitch beforehand this week.
      • Season: 24 1/3 IP | 32.7 K-BB%, 21.1 SwStr% | 2.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP
      • This Week: 5 IP | 10 Ks, 2 BBs | 3.60 ERA, 1.60 WHIP
      • Notes: Dollander would be ranked ahead of Lowder if it weren’t for the fact he will be pitching in Colorado when he gets to the majors, but Lowder isn’t really much better off in Great American Ballpark.
      • Season: 22 1/3 IP | 25 K-BB%, 13.7 SwStr% | 2.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP
      • This Week: 3 IP | 4 Ks, 1 BBs | 0.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
      • Notes: Barco is going to move up a level pretty quick and should already be in AA based on his age. They are ramping him up slowly in the Paul Skenes tradition.

      • Notes: Santos continues to destroy at the high A level and at 22-years-old, he should move up to AA with a couple more starts like this.

      • Notes: Murphy is a former first rounder who is really popping this year after a strong run at A ball last year and a rough entrance to high A.

  • SP Andry Lara (Nationals):
      • Season: 30 2/3 IP | 24.8 K-BB%, 16.9 SwStr% | 2.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP
      • This Week: 7 IP | 2 Ks, 1 BBs | 2.57 ERA, 0.86 WHIP
      • Notes: Lara is off to a strong start and like Sullivan went deeper this time around and managed to get productive outs without the strikeouts.
      • Season (A): 16 IP | 25.4 K-BB%, 17.7 SwStr% | 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP
      • This Week: 6 IP | 8 Ks, 2 BBs | 1.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP
      • Notes: This was only Olson’s second start in high A, he started the season in A ball and was promoted after some dominance.
      • Season: 8 2/3 IP | 21.6% K-BB%, 18.8 SwStr% | 1.04 ERA, 1.27 WHIP

      • Notes: Bruns didn’t play until the end of April, so he must have been coming off an injury, but he’s been building up with each start.

      • Notes: Emerson is back and had a ridiculous OBP week.

      • Notes: Miller is a guy I thought would move off SS to third, but he’s showing some early athleticism this season with all the steals which might keep him on SS for a little longer.
      • Season: .289/.440/.422 | 19.8 BB% / 15.5 K%| 8 XBH, 2 HR, 10 SB
      • This Week: 8/18 (w/ 3 BBs) | 0 XBH, 0 HR, 2 SB
      • Notes: Jaison is only a year younger than his brother and could be close to as good, but the Guardians are an organization that promotes slowly, so it’s unlikely we see a jump similar to what the Brewers did with Jackson.
      • Season: .279/.357/.477 | 10.9 BB% / 25.6 K%| 14 XBH, 4 HR, 3 SB
      • This Week: 10/26 | 5 XBH, 2 HR, 2 SB
      • Notes: Doncon is a former Dodger with a ton of upside. He’s showing a lot more speed this year, which is nice to see as a potential MI.
      • Season: .276/.345/.486 | 9.2 BB% / 21 K%| 10 XBH, 6 HR, 1 SB
      • This Week: 8/23 | 2 XBH, 2 HR, 0 SB
      • Notes: Velazquez is showing nice hit and power tools thus far at the A level and is a name to watch.

      • Notes: Duno strikes out a lot, but is built for a similar line to Shea Langeliers as a power hitting first catcher.

      • Notes: Delgado received a quick promotion from complex to A ball and is showing why.

A Pitchers

      • Notes: Meyer seems to be getting his feet under him still, it’s a small sample size. Don’t freak out.
      • Season: 30 IP | 26.1 K-BB%, 14.5 SwStr% | 3.00 ERA, 0.90 WHIP
      • This Week: 6 IP | 7 Ks, 0 BBs | 6.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
      • Notes: Suarez has been a beast this season and should earn a trip to high A sooner rather than later.
  • SP Quinn Matthews (Cardinals):
      • Season: 30 2/3 IP | 35 K-BB%, 18.6 SwStr% | 1.47 ERA, 0.82 WHIP
      • This Week: 6 1/3 IP | 8 Ks, 1 BBs | 4.26 ERA, 0.79 WHIP
      • Notes: I saw Matthews vs. Thomas White this week and both were incredibly impressive. Matthews is good enough he should probably be in AA at this point. The fastball / slider combo was sick and generated a ton of swinging strikes.
      • Season: 24 2/3 IP | 19.8 K-BB%, 12.7 SwStr% | 4.01 ERA, 1.70 WHIP
      • This Week: 5 IP | 6 Ks, 1 BBs | 1.80 ERA, 0.80 WHIP
      • Notes: White was very effective at generating ground balls and avoiding hard contact. The 12/6 breaking ball was his best strikeout pitch and he also dotted in the fastball nicely.
  • SP Juan Salas (Cardinals):
      • Season: 25 IP | 23.8 K-BB%, 15.4 SwStr% | 1.80 ERA, 1.04 WHIP
      • This Week: 4 IP | 7 Ks, 1 BBs | 4.50 ERA, 1.25 WHIP
      • Notes: Salas showed some strong swing and miss stuff last year, but this year is really putting things together.
      • Season: 30 1/3 IP | 41.4 K-BB%, 19.6 SwStr% | 0.89 ERA, 0.76 WHIP
      • This Week: 4 2/3 IP | 9 Ks, 0 BBs | 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP
      • Notes: Tug Boat Wilkinson keeps on rolling and at his age, he should be at least at high A.

      • Notes: This is the Welsh’s dude, he put him on my radar, but he had two triples and is smoking the ball in early complex games.

      • Notes: Bonilla is projected for some big time power and thus far he’s fitting the bill.
