Fantasy Baseball Lineup and Roster Notes (as of FRI 5/18)

  • Baltimore Orioles:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Adley Rutschman is having a better season this year than last year, which is a little surprising considering how many people thought last year was close to his max potential.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Kyle Bradish has an 18% K-BB rate and 3.30 SIERA through his first three starts on the season.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Yennier Cano and Craig Kimbrel have a bit of a co-closer situation going on with Cano having the only save between them since May 5th.
  • Boston Red Sox:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Tyler O’Neil was moved back to 5th in the lineup with Connor Wong (who started the season in a split starter role with Reese McGuire) hitting third.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Bryan Bello and Nick Pivetta are back in the rotation.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Chicago White Sox:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Bryan Ramos is hitting 8th and is showing top end contact skills.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Mike Clevinger has had two bad starts so far, continuing the trend of guys missing spring training being terrible.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No Update.
  • Cleveland Guardians:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Tyler Freeman is leading off now and interestingly has a nice power/speed combo, but is being weighed down by an unlucky .208 BABIP.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Triston McKenzie had another decent start and Tanner Bibee has been solid, but it would be nice to get some more strikeouts.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Detroit Tigers:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Is Wenceel Perez for real?  No, he has a .368 BABIP against a .306-.313 last year in the minors and despite having a high average EV, his max EV is only 106.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Matt Manning has basically been league average since replacing Kenta Maeda in the rotation – nothing special here.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Houston Astros:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Alex Bregman moved back up the order to 4th after slugging .368/.381/.947 and 3 homers this week.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Ronel “stick stuff” Blanco is out for 10 days with a suspension.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Kansas City Royals:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Seth Lugo has been on a tear with a 27.2% K-BB rate and 2.56 SIERA over his last three starts.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Los Angeles Angels:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Jo Adell is doing the Jo Adell this month by hitting only .159/.224/.364 with 3 homers and 2 steals on the month.  Tools, but no hit tool.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Griffin Canning and Reid Detmers are going in opposite directions luck-wise, but Detmers is still way better than Canning.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • Minnesota Twins:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Trevor Larnach is hitting second now, but his average is way above his actual ability with a .375 BABIP helping to boost him.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Simeon Wood-Richardson is making himself into a weapon by posting a 16.3% K-BB rate and only 5.8% BB rate with a 3.87 SIERA thus far.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • New York Yankees:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Clarke Schmidt is the Yankees best pitcher with Gerrit Cole out.  He has a 16.2% K-BB rate and 3.77 SIERA.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Oakland Athletics:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Shea Langeliers is hitting fourth and should be hitting for a higher average (slowed down by a .213 BABIP), while the power looks real with a near 92 average EV and near .280 ISO.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Nothing worth talking about.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new – just more Mason Miller dominance.
  • Seattle Mariners:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Bryan Woo has two starts cut short on workload, but has performed excellently with a 17.1% K-BB rate and 3.64 SIERA.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • Tampa Bay Rays:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Josh Lowe is hitting second since returning and is hitting .300/.364/.533 with two bombs.
      • Jonathan Aranda is hitting fourth since returning from injury and is playing second with an 0/6 stretch going since returning.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Taj Bradley is looking great since returning with a 22.7% K-BB rate and 3.07 SIERA through two starts.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Pete Fairbanks is back in the closer role.
  • Texas Rangers:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Evan Carter has been day-to-day all week, but should be returning this weekend at full strength.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Jack Leiter is stuck in AAAA limbo right now.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • Toronto Blue Jays:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Alek Manoah might be back, at least half-way.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • Arizona Diamondbacks:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Joc Pederson has started in every game, except two this month and has a .308/.357/.615 line with 3 bombs and a steal over that time period.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Sorry about my Slade Cecconi takes, he just looked good under the hood.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update
  • Atlanta Braves:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Nothing new since last week.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • If you haven’t noticed, Chris Sale is pitching like a top 20 SP again and has a 27.2% K-BB rate and 2.42 SIERA on the season.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Chicago Cubs:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Mike Tauchman is leading off for the Cubs every day .266/.391/.430 with 4 homers and 3 steals a quarter through the season.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • Cincinnati Reds:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Jeimer Candelario is hitting much better in May with a .311/.326/.467 slash and one bomb.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • It’s possible Nick Marinez re-joins the rotation with the Nick Lodolo IL stint.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • Colorado Rockies:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Jordan Beck has a .304/.304/.478 slash with a bomb and a steal over the last week.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Jalen Beeks is the closer now and has four saves now in May with an 18.2% K-BB rate and 5.73 SIERA, so he has not been lucky.
  • Los Angeles Dodgers:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • No update.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • In case you haven’t noticed, Tyler Glasnow has a 26.7% K-BB rate and 2.57 SIERA this season.
      • Walker Buehler has not been great since coming back with an 11.1% K-BB rate and 4.32 SIERA.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Miami Marlins:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Josh Bell and Jake Burger have been atrocious.
      • Jesus Lopez is hitting the crap out of the ball from a hard hit perspective, but he’s hitting the ball on the ground way too much.
      • Otto Lopez has a great hit tool, but the power he has shown to date does not have any track record of being real.  He’s hitting seventh in the lineup and has some artificially high numbers.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Luzardo had a great first start back going 5 ⅔ with 8 Ks and only 1 BB.
      • Braxton Garrett also had a great first start back going 5 ⅓ IP with 8 Ks and 2 BBs
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Milwaukee Brewers:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Joey Ortiz has a .300/.382/.733 with 3 homers in the month of May.
      • Christian Yelich since returning from the IL in six games has taken off where he left off with a .400/.423/.520 slash.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Robert Gasser’s track record in the minors is stuff over control, but since being in the majors he’s been control over stuff.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Trevor Megill has four saves over the last month, while Joel Payamps seems to be relegated to the setup man.
  • New York Mets:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Christian Scott has been a beast so far and has a 22% K-BB rate and 3.15 SIERA
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • Philadelphia Phillies:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Bryson Stott is hitting .412/.551/.657 with a homer and 5 steals in May thus far.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.
  • Pittsburgh Pirates:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Oneil Cruz is mashing in May with an average EV of 99 MPH and a .333/.375/.711 slash with four homers and a steal.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Paul Skenes had a 31% CSW, 25% K-BB rate and 2.79 SIERA in his first major league start.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • San Diego Padres:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Luis Arraez is hitting .317/.364/.366 since joining the Padres and is leading off.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Joe Musgrove is expected to return to the rotation later this weekend.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • San Francisco Giants:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Mike Yazstremski is leading off with Jung Hoo Li on the IL with Matt Chapman hitting third.
      • The Giants called up both Heliot Ramos and Luis Matos to start in the OF.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Pen Notes:
      • Nothing new.
  • St. Louis Cardinals:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • The Cardinals have been leading off Masyn Winn and Matt Carpenter during their winning streak this week.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • The Cardinals going with a fifth day bullpen day with Matthew Liberatore as a three inning starter is terrible.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No updates.
  • Washington Nationals:
    • Lineup Notes:
      • Jesse Winker has been out of the lineup with an injury, I suppose we will see what that means for him more when he is back.
    • Rotation Notes:
      • Nothing new.
    • Pen Notes:
      • No update.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Assistant Analyze Moves Who To Pick Up

Fantasy Baseball Injury Notes (as of FRI 5/17)

  • SP Emmet Sheehan (Dodgers) – I was super high on Sheehan this offseason and he just got Tommy John, so it’s unlikely we see him until 2026 at this point.  This one just sucks.
  • SP Nick Lodolo (Reds) – Lodolo was placed on the IL as a precautionary measure and is expected to be back as soon as he can… sounds like a way to limit his innings.
  • OF TJ Friedl (Reds) – TJ Friedl broke his thumb after just coming off the IL missing six weeks earlier in the season, poor dude only played in six games before getting nailed by a Kyle Harrison pitch in the hand.
  • RP Adbert Alzolay (Cubs) – Alzolay was placed on the IL with right forearm tightness, further strengthening Hector Neris’ claim.
  • 1B Rhys Hoskins (Phillies) – Hoskins hit the IL with a hamstring injury after smashing a killer bomb off the Cardinals.

NOTE: Under 50% Owned (CBS)

Last Week:  RP Yennier Cano (Orioles, 36%), OF Lars Nootbaar (Cardinals, 42%), SP Mitchell Parker (Nationals, 36%), OF Johnny LaDuca (Rays, 26%), SP JP Sears (Marlins, 31%)

  1. SP Robert Gasser (Brewers) 33% – Gasser is being promoted up from the 15 team list to the 12 team list this week and we should see even more Ks from him moving forward as he projects as at least a 20% K rate guy in the majors if not up at 24-25%.
  2. OF Lars Nootbaar (Cardinals) 43%  – Another repeat from last week, and no, I’m not being lazy here.  Nootbaar is 7/25 with 5 BBs, a homer and a double over the last week.  He’s getting things rolling as the Cardinals have actually looked better the last few games
  3. OF Joey Loperfido (Astros) 45% – People gave up on Loperfido too quick, but he’s starting to find his groove in the majors now with a .360/.429/.520 slash over the last two weeks, even with an over 30% K rate with a bomb and a steal.
  4. RP Yennier Cano (Orioles) 39% – No Orioles pitcher has a save over the last week, but if one does get a save I would assume Cano is still the favorite.  This is his second consecutive week on this list.
  5. C Connor Wong (Red Sox) 42% – If you were unlucky enough to have Willson Contreras injured on your team, your best replacement might be Connor Wong who has been hitting third for the Red Sox and has a .340/.370/.530 slash the season with 5 homers.

Tim’s Top 5 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Adds (15 Team Leagues)

NOTE: Under 30% Owned (CBS)

Last Week:  SP Robert Gasser (Brewers, 12%), SS/3B Josh Rojas (Mariners, 29%),  OF Tommy Pham (White Sox, 18%), 2B Michael Massey (Royals, 14%), SP Slade Cecconi (Diamondbacks, 12%)

  1. 1B / OF Luke Raley (Mariners) 9% – Luke Raley had an incredibly slow start to the season, but has been on a tear since the start of May with a .375/.444/.688 slash, 3 bombs and 2 steals over this time.
  2. OF Tommy Pham (White Sox) 22% – Tommy Pham should be owned in all five OF leagues, it’s that simple.  This is his fourth consecutive week on this list and I’m not taking him off, because he needs to be owned in all 15 team leagues.  He has a .306/.370/.490 slash in May with 2 homers and a steal.
  3. OF Eddie Rosario (Nationals) 16% – Rosario is on one of his infamous tears right now and you should own him while he’s hot.  He had a heater last season that lasted almost two months so get on while it lasts.  He’s hitting .333/.429/.778 with 2 bombs and 2 steals over the last week.
  4. SP Andrew Heaney (Rangers) 28% – I recommended Heaney a couple weeks ago in 15 teamers and he has stayed pretty hot since.  Over Heaney’s last five starts he has a 23.7% K-BB rate and 3.21 SIERA.  Heaney has these stretches as well where he can be really good, as we saw when he was with the Dodgers, he’s on one right now.
  5. OF Jordan Beck (Rockies) 19% – Beck, like Loperfido didn’t get a long enough leash and here he is tapping into his potential.  Over his last five games he’s 7/19 with a bomb and a steal.  Go take your shot to see if he is figuring it out for long term value, now is your chance.

Fantasy Baseball Trade Finder

Tim’s Top 10 Fantasy Baseball Redraft Prospects (not promoted yet)

1. 3B Junior Caminero (Rays)

  • 2023 A+/AA:   .324/.384/.591, 31 HR, 5 SB
  • 2023 MLB:  .235/.278/.353, 1 HR
  • 2024 AAA: .316/385/.582, 7 HR, 1 SB
  • Age: 20
  • ETA: Late May
  • fScores:  103 fContact, 74 fDiscipline, 113 fPower, 97 fSpeed, 57 fDurability
  • Comp:  Ronald Acuna w/o the wheels
  • Prime Skills:  Probably the quickest bat speed in the minors, the hit tool is ridiculous and now the power is catching up.  He could be one of the best hitters in baseball sooner rather than later.
  • Ranking Explanation:  The only reason for the Rays to keep Caminero down at this point is to make sure he doesn’t win Rookie of the Year, so they can keep the extra year of control.  He’s ready and they need him.

2. OF James Wood (Nationals)

  • 2023 A+/AA:  .262/.353/.520, 26 HR, 18 SB
  • 2024 AAA:  .354/.453/.583, 7 HR, 9 SB
  • Age: 21
  • ETA:  Late May
  • fScores:  104 fContact, 103 fDiscipline, 117 fPower, 126 fSpeed, 58 fDurability
  • Comp:  Lefty Aaron Judge
  • Prime Skills:  Light tower power from the left side of the plate.  He has a home run swing if we’ve ever seen one and has the biggest power upside of the top 10, even more than Wyatt Langford and Junior Caminero due to the huge 6’ 7” frame.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Wood has shown increased contact and plate skills this season and basically just needs to put that together with the natural power in order to be ready.  Wood improved on his poor GB rate this week and also has an over 115 max EV on the season.

3. SP Drew Thorpe (White Sox):

  • 2023 A+/AA:  139 ⅓ IP, 182 Ks, 38 BBs, 2.52 ERA, 0.98 WHIP
  • 2024 AA:  36 1/3 IP, 33 Ks, 11 BBs, 1.73 ERA, 0.96 WHIP
  • Age: 23
  • ETA: Late May
  • fScores:  fPDurability 61, 128 fStuff, 114 fControl, 134 fERA
  • Comp:  George Kirby-light to Chris Paddack-ish
  • Prime Skills:  Primarily a fastball, changeup guy (though the best attribute of the fastball is where he places it), Thorpe might remind Padres fans of former top Padres prospect Chris Paddack.  He has a nice slider he mixes in between the two and has dominated the minors to date ala Mr. Paddack.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Thorpe is looking great and I’m assuming he’s only in AA because they want him pitching to Quero.  He’s probably better than a couple of the current White Sox starters, but at this point they might as well let him work in the minors a little longer with his future teammates, the big league squad doesn’t have many of their long term assets there.

4. 3B Coby Mayo (Orioles, 2024)

  • 2023 AA/AAA:  .290/.410/.564, 29 HR, 5 SB
  • 2024 AAA:  .282/.353/.594, 13 HR, 3 SB
  • Age: 22
  • ETA: Late July
  • fScores: 89 fContact, 101 fDiscipline, 108 fPower, 77 fSpeed
  • Comp:  Wil Myers at 3B with less speed
  • Prime Skills:  Mayo has a quick and powerful swing that portends to 30-ish homer power with 10-ish steal speed, but he might strike out a lot as well.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Mayo is going to be great when he gets the call, but the Orioles don’t need to promote him and I’m not convinced he’s up until Jackson Holliday gets another chance in the majors since one is on the 40 man and one isn’t.  My guess is they need to clear some room with a trade before we see May in the bigs, but I still like him better than the guys lower in the rankings ultimately.

5. SS / 3B Orelvis Martinez (Jays):

  • 2023 AA/AAA:  .243/.340/.496, 28 HR, 2 SB
  • 2024 AAA:  .261/.346/.536, 10 HR, 0 SB
  • Age:  22
  • ETA:  Late May
  • Comp:  Willy Adames and Marcel Ozuna mash up
  • Prime Skills:  Martinez has a ton of power and if he can manage a major league average hit tool and reign in the strikeouts, he could end up a very productive fantasy league asset.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Martinez could easily be starting at 3B for the Blue Jays soon if he keeps mashing like he is in the minors.  An average EV around 90 and max EV over 115 gives him a ceiling as a top 10 power hitter in baseball.

6. SP Cade Horton (Cubs):

  • 2023 A/A+/AA:  88 1/3 IP, 117 Ks, 27 BBs, 2.65 ERA, 1.00 WHIP
  • 2024 AA:  16 ⅓ IP, 18 Ks, 2 BBs, 1.10 ERA, 0.92 WHIP
  • 2024 AAA:  7 IP, 11 Ks, 8 BBs, 10.29 ERA, 2.14 WHIP
  • Age: 22
  • ETA: Mid July
  • fScores: 43 fPDurability, 120 fStuff, 106 fControl, 113 fERA
  • Comp:  Hunter Brown
  • Prime Skills:  Dude looks like a righty Jon Lester throwing 98 MPH darts and has a nasty curve.  He has shown insane command with three plus pitches between the fastball, slider and curve and should be moving pretty quickly next season due to his well above average command.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Horton was promoted to AAA, bringing him one step closer to a call up.  The Cubs are competing this year and if they want their best chance down the stretch they will want Horton in the rotation.  He has had a rough start to his AAA career, but he will even out.

7. SP Cade Povich (Orioles):

  • 2023 AA/AAA Stats:  126 2/3 IP, 171 Ks, 66 BBs, 5.04 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
  • 2024 AAA Stats:  41 2/3 IP, 57 Ks, 17 BBs, 2.16 ERA, 1.10 WHIP
  • Age: 23
  • ETA:  Mid July
  • fScores: 69 fPDurability, 105 fStuff, 88 fControl, 91 fERA
  • Comp:  Matthew Liberatore, but better
  • Prime Skills:  He’s a lanky lefty with some loopy stuff that plays up in the minors for K’s, but I’m concerned about how the stuff will play at the major league level based on my comparison to Matthew Liberatore who has gotten hit hard in the majors.
  • Ranking Explanation:  I always like Povich as a strikeout pitcher, but his lack of control concerned me and I thought he might end up in the pen.  He still has an 11% BB rate, which isn’t great – but if he can stick there he should be fine.  The Orioles are going to hold him down as insurance in the event someone gets hit with a longer term injury.

8. SP Adam Mazur (Padres):

  • 2023 AA Stats:  96 IP, 90 Ks, 17 BBs, 2.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP
  • 2024 AA Stats:  32 ⅓ IP, 32 Ks, 5 BBs, 1.95 ERA, 0.87 WHIP
  • 2024 AAA Stats:  6 IP, 6 Ks, 2 BBs, 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP
  • Age:  23
  • ETA:  Late July
  • Comp:  Tanner Bibee, but a harder more Luis Castillo like slider
  • Prime Skills:  Impeccable command with a nice hard 12/6 slider and a changeup with a ton of run.  He’s been a lot more consistent with the fastball up in the zone this year.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Mazur could be the next man up for the Padres and they actually did just promote him to the difficult PCL.  Randy Vazquez is probably the guy for a short term injury, but Mazur in the event of a long-term injury.

9. SP Ricky Tiedemann (Blue Jays)

  • 2023 Rk/A/AA/AAA:  44 IP, 82 Ks, 23 BBs, 3.68 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
  • 2024 AAA:  8 IP, 10 Ks, 9 BBs, 5.63 ERA, 2.00 WHIP
  • Age: 22
  • ETA:  Early July
  • fScores:  49 fPDurability, 121 fStuff, 96 fControl, 167 fERA
  • Comp:  Good Andrew Heaney
  • Prime Skills:  Tiedemann was a huge breakout last year and has a really nice fastball – slider combo.  His changeup plays great off the slider, which is probably his best pitch.  He’s a tunnel master who has a short arm / side arm funky delivery from the left side which makes his slider even tougher to pick up.  He does have bullpen risk.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Despite the pen risk, his stuff is pretty ridiculous and he’s throwing again at complex so it’s possible we see him ramp up into the majors mid-season.

10. SP Sem Robberese (Cardinals):

  • 2023 AA/AAA:  124 IP, 130 Ks, 57 BBs, 4.28 ERA, 1.35 WHIP
  • 2024 AAA:  47 ⅔ IP, 47 Ks, 12 BBs, 2.65 ERA, 0.99 WHIP
  • Age: 22
  • ETA: Lat May
  • Comp:  Joe Ryan light
  • Prime Skills:  Robberse is a secondary first guy who has a lot of deception in his delivery making his 90-92 MPH fastball play up a lot more in velo.  I saw him a couple times this spring and thought he looked more like a future reliever, but he’s been dominating AAA with impeccable command and has figured something out this year as far as maximizing his pitch mix.  His slider is more vertical and his cutter looks almost like a power curve, while his change up against his fastball (which looks like it has some nice IVB) makes for a different look than most pitchers give.
  • Ranking Explanation:  Robberse didn’t get the call this week as the Cardinals went for a bullpen game and then proceeded to have his worst start of the season, Cardinals being Cardinals I guess.  This call here is if you need some innings as there are much better players in the honorable mentions below, but those guys might be a bit further away.
