Welcome to the FantasyPros Week 6 starting pitcher rankings for 2024. On Fridays, we view the upcoming week and rank starting pitchers based on their talent and the team they play against. These rankings are for Monday, April 29, through Sunday, May 5.
These rankings use expert consensus rankings (ECR) as a starting point. Matchup information is found on the helpful Pitcher Planner’s resource for probable pitchers.
As usual, remember that some starts are projected over a week in advance. Dates can change due to rain, injury or anything else. Two-start weeks pitchers often end up as one-start weeks.
Sometimes it is best to treat a second start as a pleasant surprise rather than an expectation, especially during a rainy spring season. Be sure to check the Pitcher Planner later on for more up-to-date information.

Top 50 Starting Pitcher Rankings: Week 6
*Two honorable mentions are Walker Buehler (at Arizona) and Framber Valdez (vs. Seattle). Both pitchers are top talents when healthy and might pitch this week. They might. This uncertainty causes them to remain off the list.
Pitchers (Hopefully) on Waivers
- Mitchell Parker earned a win against the Dodgers in his major league debut. He continued impressing when he struck out eight Astros in a seven-inning shutout. Add the 2-0 rookie for his matchup, albeit against tough Texas batters.
- Edward Cabrera seems to be a pitcher the analysts always love due to his strikeout potential. I doubt his ability to remain healthy, but I see no harm in claiming Cabrera for the upside.
- Clarke Schmidt is not eye-popping. Sadly, the injured state of pitching today has caused the Clarke Schmidts of the world to make it on these lists. Schmidt performed well against the Guardians, Rays and Athletics, so managers may want to give the 28-year-old a chance.
Best Matchups
- Zack Wheeler had a slow start to the season, yet he has lifted off after 13.1 scoreless innings and 16 strikeouts in his last two starts. It will be exciting to see him face the Angels.
- Ranger Suarez may not be as big a name as others in the top 10, but he has been the hottest starter in baseball lately and is on track to do well against the Giants. His last three starts have yielded 22 scoreless innings, including a complete game shutout.
- Logan Webb is quietly dominant. The Giants ace does not rack up strikeouts, which allows him to pitch deep into games. Managers should look forward to Webb’s two-start week against Boston and Philadelphia.
Unfavorable Matchups
- Kevin Gausman, a supposed ace, has disappointed so far. I have faith the Blue Jay will lower his 5.57 ERA and 1.57 WHIP, but the opposing Nationals are not as bad as last year and will put up a fight. Consider benching Gausman in ratio leagues until he figures things out, which should be soon.
- Jordan Montgomery is finally pitching after his offseason contract debacle. He is still warming up to the regular season, so managers should be cautious and possibly sit him against the Dodgers.
- Cole Ragans was electric in 2023. So far this season, his talent has not quite translated. The southpaw prepares to duel a solid Toronto lineup this week.
- Zac Gallen is one of the best pitchers right now. Nonetheless, he is facing a Dodgers team that can make any pitcher look bad.
