Wednesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
Joe Ryan (MIN) vs. CWS
According to FanGraphs, in four starts spanning 22.2 innings this year, Joe Ryan has a 3.57 ERA, 2.13 xERA, 2.38 SIERA, 1.06 WHIP, 3.2 BB%, 32.3 K%, 30.7 CSW%, 89 Stuff+, 111 Location+ and 106 Pitching+. He's also pitched at least 5.1 innings in his four starts, struck out at least five in each and fanned at least six batters three times.
Ryan has a tantalizing matchup and dreamy betting info. This season, the White Sox are dead last in wRC+ (64) against righties. Thus, the Twins are -200, and the game's total is 7.0 runs.
Reynaldo Lopez (ATL) vs. MIA
Reynaldo Lopez's plate discipline numbers and pitch modeling this season haven't been awe-inspiring. However, in three starts spanning 18.0 innings, he has had slate-bests for ERA (0.50) and xERA (2.08). Lopez also has a 0.94 WHIP, 8.6 BB% and 26.5 K%. So, he's pitched well, even if he doesn't check every underlying data box.
The righty should stay hot in a good matchup tonight. The Marlins are tied for 25th in wRC+ (85) against right-handed pitchers in 2024.
Garrett Crochet (CWS) at MIN
Garrett Crochet has coughed up 12 runs in only 7.2 innings in his previous two starts. He salvaged his start on April 13 by striking out 10 batters, but his start on April 19 had no redeeming qualities.
Regardless, Crochet's full-season profile has been outstanding. In five starts spanning 25.2 innings this year, he has a 5.61 ERA, 2.19 xERA, 2.59 SIERA, 1.01 WHIP, 5.8 BB%, 32.7 K%, 31.1 CSW%, 111 Stuff+, 101 Location+ and 103 Pitching+.
The lefty has a GPP-friendly matchup tonight. This season, the Twins are 26th in wRC+ (80) and have an exploitable 25.0 K% versus left-handed pitching. Crochet could be undervalued as the B-side of a pitching matchup against Ryan, enhancing Crochet's appeal in GPP.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
The Padres have scored only seven runs in their first two games at Coors Field, squandering a pair of desirable matchups. Roster Resource is projecting Ty Blach to start for Colorado tonight, giving the Friars another golden opportunity to explode. Manny Machado is listed in the projected lineup but could miss another contest while on the paternity list. Still, San Diego has plenty of righties to throw at Blach. Since last season, the left-handed hurler has yielded a .398 wOBA to 282 righties.
Core Studs
- In 303 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, Fernando Tatis has hit 17 homers with a .383 OBP, .263 ISO and 152 wRC+.
- Xander Bogaerts is atop San Diego's lineup, awarding him the maximum number of chances to benefit from hitting at Coors Field tonight. He's also excellent against lefties. In 557 plate appearances against southpaws since 2021, Bogaerts has hit 16 homers with a .384 OBP, .169 ISO and 137 wRC+.
- In 489 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, Ha-Seong Kim has hit 13 homers with a .357 OBP, .172 ISO and 125 wRC+. He's also stolen seven bases in eight opportunities this year.
Value Plays/Punts
- Eguy Rosario is cheap exposure to Coors Field as a platoon batter. In 34 plate appearances against lefties since 2022 he's popped four homers with a .382 OBP, .588 ISO and 268 wRC+.
- Since 2021, Seth Brown has had a .298 OBP, .228 ISO and 113 wRC+ against righties and faces one who struggles with left-handed batters. Since last year, Clarke Schmidt has surrendered a .371 wOBA to 381 left-handed batters.
- In 181 career plate appearances against lefties, Jose Miranda has hit 11 homers with a .304 OBP, .216 ISO and 123 wRC+. He's a more appealing pick at FD than DK since Miranda and Rosario are only third-base eligible at the latter.
