Monday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
Joe Ryan (MIN) at CWS
According to FanGraphs, in five starts spanning 28.2 innings this year, Joe Ryan has a 3.45 ERA, 2.25 xERA, 2.43 SIERA, 1.01 WHIP, 3.4 BB%, 32.8 K%, 31.6 CSW%, 93 Stuff+, 109 Location+ and 105 Pitching+. He had a quality start last week against the White Sox, allowing three runs on four hits, one walk and eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Ryan allowed three earned runs or fewer in all his starts this year and struck out at least six batters in four straight.
Ryan's matchup is tasty tonight. This year, the White Sox are dead last in wRC+(73) and have a 24.2 K% against righties. They're also last in wRC+ (64) and have a 25.9 K% at home. Unsurprisingly, the Twins are -165, and the game's total is only 7.0 runs.
Max Fried (ATL) at SEA
Max Fried was a trainwreck in his first two starts this season. Fortunately, he's turned his performance around. In three subsequent starts totaling 20.1 innings, Fried has had a 1.77 ERA, 3.35 xFIP, 0.93 WHIP, 67.2 GB%, 6.5 BB% and 15.6 K%. Sure, the strikeout rate was underwhelming. Otherwise, Fried's numbers in his past three starts were rock-solid.
He can continue to roll in a favorable matchup tonight. The Mariners are 19th in wRC+(93) and have a 24.3 K% this season. They also have a 97 wRC+ and 28.8 K% at home. The Braves are -155, and the game's total is 7.5 runs. Fried is a stellar pick in all game types at DK and a grossly underpriced GPP choice at FD.
Bailey Falter (PIT) at OAK
Bailey Falter is an appealing bargain-salary SP2 at DK. In five starts spanning 27.0 innings in 2024, Falter has a 3.33 ERA, 3.97 xERA, 4.57 SIERA, 0.89 WHIP, 5.8 BB% and 17.3 K%. The lefty has below-average pitch modeling and has been somewhat lucky.
Nevertheless, Falter can have an acceptable DFS start tonight in a plus matchup. The Athletics are tied for 23rd in wRC+ (84) and have a 24.7 K% against southpaws this season. They're also 26th in wRC+ (80) and have a 26.9 K% at home. Finally, the Pirates are -130, and the game's total is a non-threatening 8.0 runs.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
James Paxton must have an unimaginable collection of good luck charms based on his 2.61 ERA this year. Paxton's 5.30 xERA and 6.90 SIERA are more reflective of Paxton's pitching quality. He's walked 17 batters and struck out only 11 in 20.2 innings in 2024.
The other shoe will drop, and that could happen tonight. Seven of Arizona's projected starters have had at least a 110 wRC+ against southpaws since 2021, and five have had at least a 121 wRC+.
- Road (Guaranteed Rate Field)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 7.0 Runs/MIN -165
The Twins exploded for 11 runs yesterday, hanging five on left-handed starter Reid Detmers. They're facing another lefty tonight, and Garrett Crochet is in a funk. After holding opponents to four runs in 18.0 innings in his first three starts this year, he's coughed up 17 in just 11.2 innings in his three most recent turns. Crochet has yielded at least five runs in three straight, including ceding five runs to the Twins in 4.0 innings last week.
In addition, Minnesota has a decent lineup against lefties. Six of their projected starters have had at least a 114 wRC+ against lefties since 2021.
Core Studs
- Ketel Marte has a .362 OBP, .211 ISO, and 137 wRC+ in 130 plate appearances this season, as well as a track record of success against left-handed pitching.
- In 311 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, Byron Buxton has hit 18 homers with a .315 OBP, 270 ISO and 130 wRC+.
- Michael Busch is a change-of-scenery success story after struggling initially in the majors with the Dodgers. In 103 plate appearances this year for the Cubs, he's swatted six homers with a .340 OBP, .244 ISO and 136 wRC+.
Value Plays/Punts
- Jo Adell might finally be actualizing his intriguing tools. In 55 plate appearances this season, he's hit three homers and stolen five bases with a .382 OBP, .265 ISO and 175 wRC+.
- In 490 plate appearances against lefties since 2021, Randal Grichuk has hit 25 homers with a .337 OBP, .248 ISO and 129 wRC+.
- Jose Miranda has hit 11 homers with a .306 OBP, .216 ISO and 125 wRC+ in 186 career plate appearances against lefties.
