Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report: James Wood, Luisangel Acuna, Ricky Tiedemann, Connor Norby

Welcome to my weekly prospect report at FantasyPros. The goal of this column is to give you the most fantasy-relevant prospect information throughout the last week in one place. The format of this weekly prospect report will be by level and we will go through players in order of their placing on my latest Top 150 prospect rankings (click here to view).

I won’t be hitting every prospect every week but will focus on the most relevant players throughout the week. I will also follow up with other notable players who didn’t make my top 150 cut. This article will not focus on any AAAA-type players or veterans in the minors who have outlived their prospect status. AAA HITTERS

    • Notes: Lawlar is on the IL for at least two months after undergoing thumb surgery.

    • Notes: Crow-Armstrong will have to show better plate discipline before getting called up but he’s been electric when it comes to making things happen. He should get the call within the next couple of months.

• #20 Colson Montgomery (SS – CWS)

    • Notes: Montgomery is off to a slow start. With his health track record, it might be more important to have health and build into consistency than to press too hard for a big league spot.

    • Notes: Kjerstad is a good enough hitter he would be starting on almost every team in the majors, just not the Orioles. He’s making a case for himself to be starting at 1B over O’Hearn with an insane beginning of the season.

    • Notes: Quero has been out since after his first AB with a shoulder injury. We are still waiting for more information on the timeline and severity of the injury.

• #62 Jonatan Clase (OF – SEA)

    • Notes: Clase could be fighting for a late-season call-up. He has zero stolen bases because you need to get on base first to steal bags.

• #64 Coby Mayo (3B – BAL)

    • This Week: 11/27 | 4 XBH, 2 HR, 1 SB
    • Notes: Mayo is off to a strong start XBH-wise, however, the plate skills need to look better if he’s going to get a call-up, especially considering he might be battling Kjerstad for a roster spot. I’ve always been down on Mayo because the hit tool is slightly below average and the plate skills are below average. The power is definitely there, though.

• #65 Owen Caissie (OF – CHC)

    • Notes: Caissie might also be battling for a roster spot later in the season but that depends on health and what spot might open up. We might see DH or 1B open up before a corner OF spot.

• #67 Drew Gilbert (OF – NYM) 

• • • Season: .240/.321/.360 | 7.1 BB% / 35.7 K%| 1 XBH, 1 HR, 0 SB

    • Notes: Gilbert looks like he’s trying too hard and needs to settle into AAA. He’s probably not looking at a call-up until later in the season.

• #73 Luisangel Acuna (2B, OF – NYM)

    • This Week: 3/21 | 0 XBH, 0 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: Acuna could potentially beat Drew Gilbert up thanks to the Mauricio injury but there’s a good chance the Mets hold many of these guys down in the minors until September. Acuna is overrated a bit due to the name and is being bumped up above his level.

• #80 Jordan Beck (OF – COL) 

• • • Season: .320/.428/.720 | 18.8 BB% / 34.4 K%| 5 XBH, 2 HR, 0 SB
    • This Week: 6/18 | 4 XBH, 1 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: Beck hit a couple of monster home runs. It’s the PCL, so we have to take some power with a grain of salt, but the fact he’s in AAA, while Sterling Thompson and Yanquiel Fernandez aren’t is a good sign for him in the OF pecking order in Colorado.

• #82 Joey Loperfido (2B, OF – HOU)

    • Notes: Loperfido barely missed the cut with the Astros, to good ole Jon Singleton, but I would expect him up in the majors if there are any OF injuries. The power he is showing is insane.

    • Notes: Jung looks a lot like Nolan Gorman working his way up. He will have to show better plate skills to come up with Justyn Henry-Malloy not even getting the call yet. He’s struggling a bit to start the season.

• #91 Thomas Saggese (2B, 3B – STL)

    • Notes: The 2023 AA hitting champ is off to a slow start this week at AAA after a strong spring training. He did hit a homer on Sunday, though (not shown above). He might be turning a corner on the cold streak.

• #93 Justyn Henry-Malloy (3B, OF – DET)

    • Notes: Justyn Henry-Malloy is looking to transfer full-time to a corner OF spot and has shown the plate skills for the majors. He needs to show good enough defense to get the call.

• #105 Connor Norby (2B – BAL)

    • This Week: 9/28 | 6 XBH, 3 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: The Orioles’ minor league squad is ridiculous between Kjerstad, Mayo and Norby. Who is going to make it up into a starting role? Who is destined for the bench? Who is trade bait? Norby is the Michael Busch of the Orioles.

• #109 Andy Pages (OF – LAD) 

• • • Season: .219/.342/.313 | 10.5 BB% / 15.8 K%| 2 XBH, 0 HR, 2 SB
    • This Week: 6/25 | 2 XBH, 0 HR, 2 SB
    • Notes: Pages had a strong spring and is looking to show he’s healthy and ready to rip. In the event of a Dodgers injury he could get the call, even before Miguel Vargas.

• #112 Marco Luciano (SS – SF)

• • • Season: .407/.556/.481 | 25 BB% / 27.8 K%| 2 XBH, 0 HR, 1 SB
    • This Week: 11/24 | 2 XBH, 0 HR, 1 SB
    • Notes: Luciano was sent down in a bit of a shocker but it might be the best long-term move for his development if he can improve his plate skills at AAA. He’s looking good so far at AAA.

• #114 Tyler Soderstrom (C, 1B – OAK) 

• • • Season: .148/.233/.519 | 6.7 BB% / 26.7 K%| 4 XBH, 1 HR, 0 SB
    • This Week: 4/24 | 4 XBH, 1 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: Soderstrom has a good amount of work to do in the minors after being promoted a year too early in 2023. I might drop him out of my top 150 in the next rankings.

• #146 Ryan Bliss (MI – SEA)

• • • Season: .160/.333/.200 | 18.2 BB% / 30.3 K%| 1 XBH, 0 HR, 4 SB
    • This Week: 3/18 | 1 XBH, 0 HR, 3 SB
    • Notes: Bliss had a very strong year in the minors in 2023 but it may have been a bit luck-oriented. We will see if the hit tool is real as this minor league season progresses.

• #147 Matt Mervis (1B – CHC) 

• • • Season: .261/.387/.391 | 19.4 BB% / 19.4 K%| 3 XBH, 0 HR, 0 SB
    • This Week: 5/16 | 2 XBH, 0 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: Mervis is probably blocked on the Cubs roster but he might be a nice throw-in on a trade and would probably be starting for the Nationals or Athletics.

• #148 Justice Bigbie (1B, OF – DET) 

• • • Season: .143/.226/.179 | 9.7 BB% / 29 K%| 1 XBH, 0 HR, 0 SB
    • This Week: 3/22 | 1 XBH, 0 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: Bigbie is another guy with a strong 2023 out of nowhere who we will learn if it’s real or not. The issue is where would he play in Detroit?

• Kyle Stowers (OF – BAL) 

• • • Season: .333/.381/.872 | 2.4 BB% / 14.3 K%| 9 XBH, 6 HR, 0 SB
    • This Week: 9/30 | 8 XBH, 5 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: Stowers had a killer spring and is off to a hot start in AAA. Just one more Orioles prospect to block up the depth chart.

• Spencer Horwitz (CI – TOR) 

• • • Season: .350/.536/.550 | 28.6 BB% / 14.3 K%| 2 XBH, 1 HR, 2 SB
    • This Week: 9/30 | 1 XBH, 0 HR, 2 SB
    • Notes: Horwitz is an older guy but should be in the majors and is competing against Damiano Palmegiani for that next corner-hitting roster spot.

• Jose Fermin (MI – STL)

• • • Season: .429/.520/.857 | 16 BB% / 4 K%| 5 XBH, 2 HR, 2 SB
    • This Week: 5/13 | 1 XBH, 0 HR, 2 SB
    • Notes: Fermin had a strong spring and is taking it into AAA. He looks like a classic, legit late-blooming super UTIL guy the Cardinals are experts in developing.

• Heliot Ramos (OF – SF) 

• • • Season: .290/.371/.645 | 5.7 BB% / 22.9 K%| 4 XBH, 3 HR, 0 SB
    • This Week: 9/27 | 3 XBH, 3 HR, 0 SB
    • Notes: We have been here before with Ramos. He might be a AAAA player or a guy who can’t break out due to his skills in San Fran. He is again performing in the minors.

• Blake Dunn (OF – CIN) 

• • • Season: .242/.324/.333 | 5.7 BB% / 22.9 K%| 2 XBH, 0 HR, 3 SB
    • This Week: 7/25 | 2 XBH, 0 HR, 3 SB
    • Notes: Dunn has moved quickly because he’s older but he also served in the military. He could make an impact on the Reds this season.

Note: Miguel Vargas is raking but he is no longer prospect eligible.

AAA PITCHERS

• #10 Paul Skenes (SP – PIT) 
  • • Season: 6 IP | 50 K-BB%, 21.1 SwStr%
    • This Week: 3 IP | 45.5 K-BB%
    • Notes: Dominant stuff as Skenes seems to be in extended spring, ramping up for his debut in a month or so.
• #21 Ricky Tiedemann (SP – TOR)
  • • Season: 4 1/3 IP | -12.5 K-BB%, 11 SwStr%
    • This Week: 4 1/3 IP | -12.5 K-BB%
    • Notes: Tiedemann was roughed up a little in his first go-around this season. I’m not concerned.
• #55 AJ Smith-Shawver (SP – ATL)
  • • Season: 2/3 IP | -28.6 K-BB%, 13.8 SwStr%
    • This Week: 2/3 IP | -28.6 K-BB%
    • Notes: Smith-Shawver had one really bad outing. It’s such a small sample size, though, you can’t draw anything from it. He could get the call with the Spencer Strider injury, or it could be Bryce Elder or Dylan Dodd.

• #59 Carson Whisenhunt (SP – SF) 

• • • Season: 6 2/3 IP | 26.7 K-BB%, 15.9 SwStr%
    • This Week: 3 2/3 IP | 10 K-BB%
    • Notes: The Giants were aggressively promoting Whisenhunt to AAA to start the year. I love it and am looking forward to a debut at some point in 2024 (probably in the second half). The first start was phenomenal and the second was below average.

• #85 David Festa (SP – MIN)

• • • Season: 5 2/3 IP | 4 K-BB%, 14.1 SwStr%
    • This Week: 2 2/3 IP | 0 K-BB%
    • Notes: Anthony DeSclafani is likely out for the year, so Festa steps in as the defacto sixth man in the rotation in the event of an injury. You would like to see much better control moving forward — it’s been bad through his first two outings.

• #88 Carlos F. Rodriguez (SP – MIL)

• • • Season: 7 IP | 7.9 K-BB%, 10.9 SwStr%
    • This Week: 4 IP | 0 K-BB%
    • Notes: Looks like he added a tick to his fastball this offseason, which is his worst pitch and can only help him. The BBs were uncharacteristic and he had some bad BABIP luck in the start but Rodriguez is one to watch — despite many knocking him because of the lack of fastball velo. The second start was a piggyback, which may have thrown him off.

• #97 Cristian Mena (SP – ARI) 

• • • Season: 11 IP | 9.8 K-BB%, 12.3 SwStr%
    • This Week: 6 IP | -4 K-BB%
    • Notes: Mena is underrated as a fresh 21-year-old. He’s seventh in the pecking order for a rotation spot with the Diamondbacks and should have a good shot at a call-up at some point this season as long as he can maintain the strides in his control. Welcome to the PCL.

• #107 Mike Vasil (SP – NYM)

• • • Season: 2 1/3 IP | -25 K-BB%, 4.5 SwStr%
    • This Week: N/A
    • Notes: Vasil struggled with the robo ump in 2023 and is off to a pretty bad start in 2024.

• #111 Connor Phillips (SP – CIN)

    • This Week: 6 IP | 0 K-BB%
    • Notes: Phillips needs to work on the control if he’s going to be an effective starter. My bet is he ends up a reliever long-term.

• #113 Mason Black (SP – SF)

• • • Season: 8 2/3 IP | 23.7 K-BB%, 8 SwStr%
    • This Week: 3 2/3 IP | 20 K-BB%
    • Notes: Black was the last cut on the Giants. If there’s an injury pre-Robbie Ray comeback, he could be first up (with Kai-Wei Teng already coming up). Velo was down a couple of ticks from 2023, so keep an eye on it. Besides that, he’s pretty close to the majors.

• #115 Gordon Graceffo (SP – STL) 

• • • Season: 7 2/3 IP | 12.5 K-BB%, 7.7 SwStr%
    • This Week: 2 2/3 IP | 17.6 K-BB%
    • Notes: Graceffo fell off in 2023 after a stellar 2022. His velocity is also down a tick and a half but it did look like his control was back from 2022.

    • This Week: 3 IP | 16.7 K-BB%
    • Notes: Nastrini had a rough start against the best team in the minors, the Norfolk Tides, but he had decent underlying metrics.

• • • Season: 4 1/3 IP | -16 K-BB%, 13.1 SwStr%
    • This Week: 2 IP | -18.2 K-BB%
    • Notes: Flores is already relieving in AAA and would likely not make my top 150 as a reliever when I re-rank.

• #134 Richard Fitts (SP – BOS)

    • This Week: 4 1/3 IP | 4.5 K-BB%
    • Notes: Fitts is likely the next man up for the Red Sox after Lucas Giolito‘s injury. The good news is the rest of the Red Sox rotation is looking fantastic.

• #141 Christian Scott (SP – NYM)

    • This Week: 4 IP | 52.9 K-BB%
    • Notes: Scott looked fantastic in his first AAA start. It’s going to be hard for the Mets to hold him down once they gain the extra year of arbitration. He should be bumped up into the top 100, easily.

• #143 Mason Montgomery (SP – TB)

    • Notes: Montgomery likely won’t be ranked in my next top 150.

    • Notes: Arrighetti has added some velo but it won’t matter if he’s walking everyone. Ronel Blanco has surpassed him on the depth chart.

    • This Week: 3 1/3 IP | 18.8 K-BB%
    • Notes: Jack Leiter might be back. He could be the sixth man up for the Rangers at this point, so keep an eye on him. The fastball is up a tick as well.

• Jackson Rutledge (SP – WAS)

    • This Week: 5 IP | 25 K-BB%
    • Notes: The swinging strike rate was way up for Rutledge. With the increased velo of MacKenzie Gore, their pitching coaches may have figured something out finally.

    • Notes: The stuff was good but the control was all over the place for McDermott, who is in a battle with Cade Povich for the next man up.
