Fantasy Baseball Opener: Jackson Holliday, George Kirby, Max Scherzer (4/10)

Greetings, friends. He’s finally here! After oddly sending him down to begin the season, the Orioles are correcting their mistake and calling up top prospect Jackson Holliday. The baseball gods may be taking all of our pitchers from us, but at least we’ll get Holliday in The Show now.

Also, be sure to check out our NEW SHOW on the FantasyPros Baseball Podcast feed. The Cycle, featuring Ryan Wormeli and yours truly (along with other recurring analysts like Kelly Kirby and Chris Welsh), is a new weekly fantasy baseball show to complement the daily Leading Off offering. We’re stoked about it, and we hope you are, too. Give it a listen, let us know what you think, and leave us a review on Spotify, Apple or wherever you listen to such things.

Fantasy Baseball News & Notes

Jackson Holliday is being called up. The 2022 No. 1 overall pick flew through the minor leagues and looked like he belonged during spring training this year. He was surprisingly sent down to begin the year, but the Orioles announced Tuesday night that he’s coming up. There could be some rookie bumps and slumps along the way, but his ceiling is about as high as you can imagine. He needs to be rostered everywhere if he isn’t already, even in shallower leagues.

George Kirby started the season strong with 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox. Since then, things have not gone so well. He allowed five earned runs over 4 IP in a loss to the Blue Jays last night to give him 11 ER over his last 7 2/3 IP. The consensus opinion seems to be that Kirby is pounding the zone too much and too often, and the lack of swinging strikes seems to back that up. I don’t have any Kirby shares this season because he was being drafted way too high for my liking, but I obviously think he’s better than this. He’s a clear buy low if the Kirby manager is panicking, but something about him has always left me lower than consensus on him.

Max Scherzer will throw live batting practice next week as he returns from back surgery. He’s still probably a month away from returning, but this is another step in the right direction. Given all of the pitcher injuries we’ve seen recently, Scherzer is going to be very popular on the waiver wire soon. He’s available in more than 30% of Yahoo leagues and more than 60% of ESPN leagues. If you need pitching, you could do worse than picking him up early, especially if you can stash him on your IL for a few weeks.

Fun!
