Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers have started negotiations
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and QB Baker Mayfield have begun contract negotiations, with the team “making every effort to get it done,” though Mayfield won’t take a discount.

Fantasy Impact

Mayfield resurrected his career in Tampa with career-high numbers of 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns. With Mike Evans‘ return being made official on Monday, March 4, there’s more incentive for Mayfield to stay. However, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that Atlanta and Minnesota are waiting in the wings to attract Mayfield when they have the chance.

Brian Burns receiving franchise tag from Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are placing their franchise tag on edge rusher Brian Burns, a guaranteed $24 million for one season.

Fantasy Impact

It was reported recently that Burns and Carolina’s front office had stalled on long-term contract negotiations, and with Burns holding the leverage with the threat of walking, Carolina opted to place the tag. It’s possible this move was made by Carolina to buy more time on their contract talks, but if things don’t pan out, the Panthers could always opt to tag-and-trade the edge rusher – though he won’t fetch the same value as the trade they turned down from the L.A. Rams.

Saquon Barkley will not be franchised by New York
Saquon Barkley will not be franchise-tagged by the Giants. He will be able to test the market as a free agent.

Fantasy Impact

Barkley’s career as a Giant is seemingly at a close. Though he struggled with injury at times, when healthy he has been one of the most talented and capable backs in football. The running back market is uncertain, but as a top talent he’s sure to garner interest from running back needy teams.
