The 2024 NFL Combine is in the rearview mirror. That means the NFL teams will take a minute away from the draft and focus on free agency. While free agency is always exciting and full of breaking news alerts, nothing beats the NFL Draft and all the coverage leading up to the event.
Thankfully, we have less than two months until the big event in Detroit. However, the NFL Draft can’t get here soon enough. After seeing several prospects’ draft value change over the past week, let’s look at four burning questions about the 2024 NFL Draft.

2024 NFL Draft Burning Questions
Is J.J. McCarthy a Lock as a Top-10 Draft Pick?
McCarthy’s draft stock was on the rise heading into the NFL Combine. While many on social media have already said he can’t throw because of Michigan’s run-heavy offense, McCarthy is all but a lock to be a top-10 pick. After Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels opted out of throwing at the NFL Combine, McCarthy was the top quarterback on the field in Indianapolis. With several quarterback-needy teams picking in the early teens, expect one of them to jump into the top 10 and secure the former Michigan star.
How Many Wide Receivers Will Get Selected on Day 1?
Most mock drafts have Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, Rome Odunze, and Brian Thomas Jr. coming off the board in the first round. Keon Coleman and Troy Franklin were near first-round locks but had sub-par NFL Combine performances. Meanwhile, the Texas duo of Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell stole the show during the 40-yard dash. Furthermore, Ladd McConkey and Xavier Legette could sneak into Day 1. With several wide receiver-needy teams picking at the end of the round, don’t be surprised if the record of seven gets tied this year.
Who Will be the First Cornerback Drafted?
Anyone who read a way too early 2024 NFL mock draft in May saw Kool-Aid McKinstry as the first cornerback off the board. However, his former Alabama teammate, Terrion Arnold, has been the first cornerback selected in most mock drafts over the past month. Yet, that could change after Quinyon Mitchell’s performance at the NFL Combine. The former Toledo star had the second-fastest 40-yard dash (4.33) among cornerbacks. More importantly, he shined during the on-the-field work. Mitchell is a near-lock as a top-15 pick and potentially the first cornerback drafted.
Will the NFL Finally Stop Making the Big Guys Run a Meaningless 40-Yard Dash?
Everyone loves to see prospects run the 40-yard dash. However, the 40-yard dash has become somewhat obsolete with the GPS tracking chips. More importantly, not every position needs to showcase their speed running 40 yards. Multiple offensive linemen suffered injuries running their 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine this year, including potential top-10 pick Olumuyiwa Fashanu. The 10-yard splits are what matters for the offensive and defensive linemen. Hopefully, the NFL will quit making the big guys run a 40-yard dash next year, instead stopping the run after 20 yards.
