NFL Draft Burning Questions: J.J. McCarthy, Drake Maye, Caleb Williams (2024 Fantasy Football)

The NFL Draft is one of the most popular sporting events in history. It’s not often that an event is talked about from when the season ends and continues for multiple months. The 2024 NFL Draft is no different. We have had unique storylines already, with more to come as free agency continues to pan out.

Today, we will drop the most important questions you need to focus on in the NFL Draft this season.

2024 NFL Draft Guide

NFL Draft Burning Questions

Is Caleb Williams the future Patrick Mahomes?

Thankfully, we no longer have to ask if we should stick with Justin Fields over Caleb Williams in Chicago. We can finally move on to where we think Caleb Williams is as a talent on the field. He is a polarizing player and most likely the No. 1 pick. Has there ever been a rookie given as much talent as Caleb will have in his rookie season?

Most veteran quarterbacks would sell their souls to have DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet and Gerald Everett as their pass catchers. In most fantasy leagues, Caleb Williams will go 1.01 in his rookie drafts as the “can’t-miss” rookie; let’s hope he can live up to it.

Does Drake Maye have IT?

It’s a scary thought going to a UNC quarterback again early in a draft when Mitchell Trubisky has destroyed our lives coming from the same university. Drake Maye has insane arm talent that is NFL-caliber. My issue with him lands with his decision-making, which always scares me in a rookie. When decision-making is an issue, it tends to lead to more sacks, interceptions, and pressures.

That chaos in the backfield has led to other first-round caliber quarterbacks flaming out and becoming “punch-drunk” under center. Let’s hope he fixes this issue and emphasizes the fundamentals that cause him to miss his throws sometimes, and we get a polished product in either Washington or New England (those are my projected landing spots.)

Who will draft J.J. McCarthy?

J.J.’s stock has been rising since Michigan won the college playoff tournament. He has talent that shows whenever you watch the tape, promptly his good, clean, perfect motion that makes a QB coach drool. J.J. Can hang tough in the pocket, and he adds mobility to your team. He feels like an ideal product for a lot of teams. Now, most experts have him outside of the Top-3, but I say not so fast!

He could edge out a Drake Maye and land at the beginning of the draft. However, if that doesn’t happen, where does he land?

Will he land with the New York Giants and usurp Daniel Jones?

Will he go ghost-hunting with Sam Darnold in Minnesota?

Will his former Michigan coach pull a fast one on all of us and trade Justin Herbert to draft his guy at pick five?

Will the Denver Broncos make a move up?

There are a lot of questions and all I can say is whoever drafts him needs to continue to teach him not to fixate on a target and put McCarthy in the weight room to build some strength.

Which team will be the first to trade back?

Everyone loves a good Draft Day trade! This year, we have multiple teams in the first ten picks that could move on the board. The first could be the Arizona Cardinals. They moved around the board last year and showed they aren’t afraid to take risks.

Next, we have the Chicago Bears, who have the ninth pick they could move from more draft capital as they sit here today with only four picks.

Finally, we have the Los Angeles Charger under a new regime trying to right the ship. They have multiple areas of need and could use the extra capital to move around and plug holes within their organization.

Will The Las Vegas Raiders make a pick that shocks us all?

The Raiders have a reputation within the draft to:

1. Mess up their selection and reach for a player

2. Draft speed

Would it shock anyone if the Raiders reached for Xavier Worthy after he recorded the fastest 40-yard dash of all time at the NFL Combine? I bet in your head, even you just said, “Yup, I can see this.”

Be ready with popcorn because the Raiders always throw the draft for a loop.

Who will be drafted first, Rome Odunze or Malik Nabers?

Two uniquely talented wide receivers will be on the board after Marvin Harrison Jr.is drafted first from the wide receiver group. We are still asking which wide receiver will end up in which organization between Rome Odunze and Malik Nabers. Odunze gives your team size, while Nabers gives you unique movement skills even for NFL standards. My selection would be Nabers over Odunze, but each team has specific needs. This conversation should heat up as we approach the draft.

Will a veteran get traded mid-draft?

Personally, the veteran trade mid-draft (A.J. Brown to the Eagles) is one of my favorite moments. It’s electricity. It’s pandemonium. It’s great TV! Hopefully, we get one this year, and if I had to pick the player and the trade to happen:

Tee Higgins will be traded to the Chargers, and the fifth pick will go to Cincinnati.

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION IS…

What will my team do?

We all ask this question multiple times before the draft begins. We all want the best talent. We all want to fleece other teams in trades. It’s natural. However, for most fans, the most important thing is how your team does in the draft. As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, we have enjoyed the drafts more often than not.

If you are a New York Jets fan, the sentiment isn’t shared. The draft is a multiple-day anxiety fest, but nothing is like it!

The NFL Draft is a wild time for casual and die-hard fans as these new players represent change. They represent possibilities. They represent hope for a championship. We hope you bring your popcorn, wings, sodas and any other beverages you may like and get comfortable; it’s going to be a bumpy but fun ride during the Draft weekend.
