DraftKings Pick6 2/22/24
Jalen Green (G/F – HOU): 20.5 points
Jalen Green is a talented scorer but still needs to mature as far as shot selection and defensive effort are concerned. He is shooting a career-low percentage from the field (.411) despite no longer being the top option and appears to be at risk of ceding serious minutes to Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore, two rookies who are forcing their way into larger roles. Amen is likely to start seeing more minutes with the starting unit, which could lead to Green heading to the bench until Ime Udoka gains some confidence in him. Green has scored 16 or fewer points in three of his last four games, playing under 30 minutes in each of those three. If he plays under 30 minutes tonight as expected and no longer has the green light to jack up 20 shots a game, Green is likely not going to see many 21+ point nights. Jab the Less on Jalen on a point total that is sure to drop in the near future.
Pick: Less
Amen Thompson (G/F – HOU): 25.5 P+R+A
Fred VanVleet will be back tonight, so there is obvious value on this line. I do believe that Amen may get the starting nod over Jalen Green tonight, but even if he doesn’t, there will be some direct cannibalization, which is why both of the Rockets’ promising young stars are listed here today. Amen has proven that he is still a work in progress as a playmaker, but with someone like Alperen Sengun on the floor, it is easy enough to still run actions effectively. With FVV back, Amen will play even more of an off-ball role and is going to see his minutes take a hit as well. His minutes will likely be higher than they were prior to his brief stint as the starting point guard, so there is no game data to draw conclusions from, as his role for tonight will remain uncertain until closer to tip-off. Amen should be good for eight to 13 rebounds and and assists, so he will need to be aggressive from the field and see enough minutes for there to be danger of the More hitting. Tap the Less on Amen for Thursday night.
Pick: Less
Kawhi Leonard (G/F – LAC): 3.5 assists
This may seem like an odd play at first glance, given that Kawhi is averaging just 3.7 assists on the season and is playing more off-ball than ever with James Harden running the point. However, Kawhi has recorded four or more assists in four of his last five games and in 10 of his last 16. Oklahoma City is actually one of the better teams in the league in limiting assists to the small forward position but still allowed Kawhi to dish out six dimes when he faced them earlier this season (he missed the first game). Kawhi should be motivated against an impressive Thunder team, so expect him to hit at least four assists tonight. Tap the More on Kawhi for Thursday night basketball.
