FantasyPros will be taking a look at early NFL Draft scouting reports before the Combine in March. Here’s a look at Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengartern.
2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten (OT – Washington)
6’6″ – 300 lbs.
Background:
Roger Rosengarten was a four-star recruit who played a total of three snaps between 2020 and 2021. He then started all 13 games at right tackle the following year and all 15 games this past year, allowing zero sacks over that span.
Positives:
A two-year starter for a major program who managed to get play over 1,200 snaps without being credited with a sack; the right tackle spot at Washington was the blindside blocker as Michael Penix Jr. is a left-handed quarterback. Tall offensive tackle who carries his weight well. Fires out of his stance low and shows good toughness in the run game. Good athlete who was asked to get out in space and line up opponents; can also chip and climb. Has a strong understanding of positioning to wall off defenders in the run game. Not the thickest tackle but shows good power in his upper body to generate torque and can occasionally sling down opposing blockers. Capitalizes on opportunities to put defenders in the dirt. Pass sets look good with a straight back, a sufficiently wide base and good knee-bend; very effective at maintaining his balance and replicating his form on a snap-to-snap basis. Keeps his hands nice and tight, with an active punch and strong overall placement; does a good job of resetting. Lateral quickness is above average to mirror against speed rushers. Good awareness to recognize stunts and twists.
Negatives:
Has no starts and virtually no snaps at any other positions on the line, so there could be a bit of an adjustment in terms of footwork if he’s asked to flip over to the left side. Functional strength is closer to adequate and may be asked to add some additional bulk at the next level. Can occasionally overrun his spots in space. Has some physical and nasty traits but isn’t overwhelmingly powerful in a phone booth; tall, svelte frame isn’t necessarily conducive to getting low and uprooting defensive linemen. His ability to sustain is closer to average, depending more on effort than grip strength. Can occasionally be jolted by speed-to-power. Saw a few snaps where he lost his base a bit with distance.
Summary:
A tall, athletic and fundamentally sound blindside protector who has been shutting down opposing pass rushers for the past two seasons. May not have the ideal power and grip strength in the run game but his athleticism there allows him to play in space and get up to the second level better than many of the other blockers in the class. While there may be a bit of an adjustment period in terms of his football he could eventually turn into a pretty good left tackle in a zone-blocking scheme.
Projection: Round 2
