2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Andrew Raym

Andrew Raym (OC – Oklahoma)

6’4” – 305 lbs.

Background:

Andrew Raym was a four-star guard recruit out of high school who played sparingly in 2020 before starting seven games at center, appearing in 12 total games and allowing one sack. Allowed two sacks over 10 starts at center the following year and then all 12 regular-season games there this year, with three sacks allowed.

Positives:

Big, thickly-built center with 29 career starts under his belt. Functional strength is very good and combined with a tough temperament he is physically appropriate for an offensive lineman. Fires out low and gets his feet going to generate push on inside rushing attempts; has some thudding power on contact to jolt opposing defenders. Hand placement is generally good, and does a nice job of resetting; works hard to stay engaged through the whistle. Shows a strong understanding of positioning to wall off opponents in the run game. Short-area quickness is just good enough to chip one opponent and successfully engage another. Overall awareness to recognize rushers looks pretty good. Has a strong lower body to hold the point of attack against power. Active with his punch and shows impressive power in his hands.

Negatives:

Length may be a concern. Doesn’t have the most range to get out in space; wasn’t asked to climb up to the second level much and may have difficulty lining up second-level defenders. There’s a bit of lunging on his tape as he tries to reach defenders outside his frame. Can be a bit of a leaner when engaged and will occasionally end up getting slipped by defenders with active hands. Lateral quickness in pass protection is average; looks much better when opponents are coming directly at him. Struggles to recover once he’s set his feet. Occasionally gets a bit grabby and has been flagged 10 times over the past three years, plus twice on calls that were offset or declined. Was a guard recruit out of high school but has only taken a few dozen snaps there in school, all back in his freshman season.

Summary:

May not have the sexiest game of any interior line prospect but is the type of big, tough, strong phone-booth mauler teams looking to establish a smashmouth identity tend to look for at the position. Anchors easily against power, has thudding force in his hands and competes hard through the whistle to stay engaged. A three-year starter, his experience is apparent in his strong understanding of positioning, allowing him to wall off opponents in the run game. Range limitations may constrain the number of teams that see him as a perfect fit but looks like a relatively safe choice for a gap/power-blocking scheme.

Projection: Round 4
