SmashUp Fantasy Sports: Championship Weekend Strategy

Welcome to SmashUp Fantasy Sports, one of the most entertaining twists on the fantasy football experience. SmashUpSports is a completely free-to-play multiplier salary cap game that allows you to assign multipliers or boosts to players of your choice. This is done via SmashCards. SmashCards can be assigned to players or positions and can be adjusted at any time before the slate starts. Users can enter up to three lineups per week, but if you use the promo code FANTASYPROS, you will get to enter a fourth lineup up until the Super Bowl.

SmashUp Fantasy Sports: A New Way to Play Fantasy Football

Get excited. SmashUp Fantasy Sports is matching its biggest contest ever for Championship Weekend, with a 1st place prize of $1,000. This is the best 1st place price we have seen at SmashUp Fantasy Sports, and there are now payouts for the top 200 instead of just the top 100. This is massive news for a completely free-to-play game, especially one that has proved to be as fun as SmashUp Fantasy Sports. It is easy to see why SmashUp Fantasy Sports is one of the fastest-growing free fantasy games. For more of an introduction to the game, click here.

Far from just a multiplier game with a twist, SmashUp Fantasy Sports requires more strategy than ever before. The SmashCards (which we touched on here) are multipliers, but you get to choose your multiplier and assign it to whoever you choose (providing you stay under the SmashCard salary cap). SmashCard allocation will be just as important as the roster you build. For example, take my choice to add the 2x multiplier card to Jalen Hurts for four weeks in a row. This required me to surrender a significant portion of my SmashCard salary cap each week and did not pay dividends as Hurts has been in an endless struggle mode. With new SmashCards being added every week, strategizing both roster build and SmashCard will be critical to success.

Strategy

As mentioned above, I have been playing SmashUp Fantasy Sports for a couple of weeks now and have begun to truly appreciate the innovation and differentiation. The graphic user interface (or GUI) brings back memories of the original Nintendo Entertainment System or Sega Master System, but this is far from an 8-bit production. For proof, hover over one of the SmashCards to see 2023 Magic Card level graphics.

For Championship Weekend, I will be building four different lineups. I made sure to sign up with the promo code ‘FANTASYPROS’, so I have the luxury of a fourth lineup, just like you will when you enter the code upon signing up. Sign up, to setting a complete lineup, and applying SmashCards takes just five to 10 minutes.

My lineups last week were an abject disaster. My highest finish was in the 600’s due to making multiple bad player selections including Nico Collins, Zay Flowers, and Gus Edwards. I will need to rethink my strategy for this weekend.

I am excited about the new format for the Conference Championship. Flex9 means we get to choose nine players (or D/ST) from any position providing that we stay under the salary cap. There are no new SmashCard additions this week, and as always, selecting the right SmashCards will be the deciding factor between finishing in the money or being embarrassed like I was last week. I set three lineups early in the week and set another on game day. Here are the three lineups I have set so far.

Lineup 1

Lamar Jackson, BAL D/ST, SF D/ST, Justin Tucker, Harrison Butker, Isiah Pacheco, Amon-Ra St. Brown, KC D/ST

The goal here was to field a full lineup and to try to make use of each opportunity for fantasy points. I have been tinkering with lineups missing one or more players but have not had the type of success I was hoping for. Yes, most of that has to do with the selection of players I chose and not the strategy to field as many studs as possible without regard to starting a full lineup, but with my results from last week, I am exploring new options.

Starting DEF, Sacks in the City: Ravens D/ST
I went with the 2x multiplier overall and the 4x multiplier on sacks for the Ravens defense. I have seen top-performing SmashUp lineups focus on TE, K, or D/ST, and I am attempting to recreate some of that magic here. The Chiefs offense has not been very consistent this season and will have a much tougher time with a healthier Ravens defense that could be welcoming back Marlon Humphrey.

Not So WR: Amon-Ra St. Brown
This card gives me a 2x multiplier if Amon-Ra fails to score. It has a low tag of $2000, so it is a card I often use to varying results.

Starting RB: Christian McCaffrey
I had $4000 left and decided that a 1.5x multiplier on CMC had the best potential value of what SmashCards I could still afford. This will not give me the type of boost I need to win the tournament, but it could be an excellent complement to the defense cards I selected if the Kansas City Chiefs offense struggles against the Ravens.

Lineup 2

Lamar Jackson, Justice Hill, Dalvin Cook, Gus Edwards, Zay Flowers, Nelson Agholor, Justin Tucker, BAL D/ST, Christian McCaffrey

For this lineup, I did a heavy Ravens stack with Christian McCaffrey. I left out Isaiah Likely because Mark Andrews is slated to be back for the conference championship, and due to not yet being listed, Likely wasn’t given a salary accordingly. I couldn’t fit Odell Beckham Jr. because of CMC’s exorbitant tag.

SmashCards

Big Kick Energy, All Pro K: Justin Tucker
These two cards give me a 2.5x multiplier on Tucker’s fantasy points and a 2.5x multiplier on field goals of 40 yards or more. I thought about adding the double doink card that awards 10 points for each missed field goal, but that would probably have been a better idea for Tyler Bass or Anders Carlson last week as opposed to the most accurate kicker of all time.

Starting QB: Lamar Jackson
I thought about Projectile Dysfunction here, but Lamar is not always a volume passer, and due to his ability to make the right RPO read as well as rip off chunk plays on the ground himself, he has been very efficient in the passing game. He has had more than enough games with few enough incompletions to make this worth the SmashCard budget. I instead went with Starting QB, which gives me a 1.5x boost to Lamar’s fantasy score.

Human vulture: Gus Edwards
This card gives me double points for TDs and 0.5x for rushing yards. With Dalvin Cook set to see an expanded role between the 20’s, this seems like a strong use of my leftover SmashCard budget.

Lineup 3

Travis Kelce, Sam LaPorta, George Kittle, Isiah Pacheco, Christian McCaffrey, Justin Tucker, Jahmyr Gibbs, Brandon Aiyuk

I decided to try something a little different with my third lineup. I went with three stud tight ends, the only two true lead runners on the four teams, as well as Justin Tucker, who should be a busy man on Sunday, Gibbs, who has proven to be a game-breaker, and Brandon Aiyuk, who figures to be more involved regardless of the status of Deebo Samuel.

SmashCards

Hall of Fame RB: Christian McCaffrey
This card gives CMC a 2.5x multiplier on all his fantasy pings for this weekend’s matchup against Detroit. Brock Purdy has had his struggles against good teams and could have his hands full against a Detroit Lions team playing its best football of the season. The 49ers will lean heavily on CMC as long as gamescript allows for it.

All Pro K: Justin Tucker
This card gives me a 2.5x multiplier on Tucker’s fantasy points for the weekend. Tucker could play a big factor in the Conference Championship, so he is someone I tried to get on all my lineups this week. Being historically accurate also doesn’t hurt, as I am not trying to give away fantasy points.
