PGA DFS Picks: Sony Open (2024)

Aloha again! It means hello and goodbye, but this week, it also means “welcome back.”

The Sony Open from Wai’alae Country Club on the island of Oahu has been a PGA Tour staple for decades and marks the return of full-field golf in the new year. Hawaii is gorgeous throughout the year, and this week’s romp around quaint, cozy Wai’ailae is no exception.

This week also marks the first tournament of the young season where the sportsbooks and DFS algorithms are clueless and ripe for exploitative picking.

Wai’alae Country Club is among the shortest tracks the players will face all season, guarded only by tree-lined fairways and postage-stamp greens exposed to the Pacific trade winds. The rough was lengthened a touch last season but only affected the scoring average by a couple of strokes. The par-70 layout will demand accuracy from the tee box and precision on approach, especially on the 10 par-4 holes. Some focus will also be required around the greens since there won’t be nearly as much square footage to aim for compared to Kapalua last week.

Have no fear; the weaker field at the Sony Open still holds oodles of value and leverage in DFS lobbies. I found it incredibly easy to build lineups around my core plays and player pool at large. That won’t happen often as we traverse this marathon golf season, so here’s a chance to snowball our bankrolls early.
