2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Javion Cohen

Javion Cohen (OG – Miami)

6’4” – 305 lbs.

Background:

Javion Cohen began his collegiate career at Alabama. He redshirted 28 snaps into the 2020 season and then started 14 games at left guard the following year — allowing zero sacks in 1,047 snaps. He started 12 games at left guard in 2022, but only played 553 snaps before transferring to Miami, where he also started at left guard.

Positives:

Comes with three years of starting experience for major programs. Solidly-built guard with what looks like good length and nice thickness in the lower body. Impressive functional strength is readily apparent on tape. Can be an effective phone-booth blocker. Has a powerful shove to jolt opponents on contact with some leg churn to generate push after engaging. Able to pull to the right and secure blocks in the hole. Pass sets show a wide base. Comfortable catching and riding in pass protection, with a strong lower body. Gets good extension from opponents to keep them out of his frame. Able to recover and win some plays ugly. Shows some alertness in pass protection to seek out opportunities to help. Can knock opponents off balance when he finds an opportunity.

Negatives:

Has only played left guard, aside from 28 snaps at left tackle in 2020. Overall coordination at the second level — or after chipping one opponent — can be hit-or-miss. Doesn’t seem to have the most flexibility in his lower body, which undermines his leverage to some extent. Can seem more reactive than anticipatory. His ability to sustain in the run game leaves something to be desired with balance issues that occasionally crop up and lead him to fall off of blocks to either side. Lateral quickness is closer to average; doesn’t have a ton of range and can lunge at opponents rather than engaging with form. Can play a bit over his toes in pass protection. Doesn’t always anchor at the line as effectively as he could.

Summary:

A thickly built, powerful and experienced left guard who has made it through his entire collegiate career without allowing a sack. However, at times it can seem like his feel for the game and technique isn’t quite where it should be after spending three years at Alabama and one year with the Hurricanes. Without ideal balance, flexibility and quickness, he will need to play with more anticipation to perform at a high level. Seems more like a developmental option for an inline/gap scheme.

Projection: Round 4/Round 5
