NHL DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Primer: Tuesday (12/19)

Twenty-two teams hit the NHL ice tonight, providing us with many combinations to build a profitable DFS lineup. Below, I’ve listed the lineup I’m playing in the classic $50,000 Salary format at DraftKings. I’ve also listed each player’s price at FanDuel.

Let’s dive into who I think has a chance to go off tonight in the NHL!

Today’s NHL DFS Picks & Analysis

The lineup below is based on DraftKings, but FanDuel prices are also listed.

C1: Bo Horvat (NYI) | $6,600 DK, $8,400 FD

One of the marquee matchups tonight pits the Oilers against the Islanders in a cross-conference showdown. Edmonton has dropped two straight games, reverting to awful defense in the process. They lost 7-4 to the Lightning and 5-1 to the Panthers. I’ll take this opportunity to fade the vulnerable Oilers’ netminding with a pair of Islanders tonight.

First is Bo Horvat, who is third on the team with 30 points (12G, 18A). Nine (4G, 5A) of his points have come on the power play, which will have a favorable matchup against an Edmonton PK that’s just 20th in the league (79.41%).

C2: Tommy Novak (NSH) | $4,200 DK, $4,900 FD

The Predators are currently playing great hockey, winning 13 of their last 16 games. They’ll host the Canucks tonight, who are 5-0-1 in their last six games. If you’re looking for value with this Nashville team, you have to search under the big dogs up top, like Filip Forsberg and Ryan O’Reilly.

I’ll take a shot with Tommy Novak tonight, who is up to 13 points courtesy of six goals and seven assists. Six (4G, 2A) of his points have come on the PP, and this unit should find success against a Vancouver team that’s 24th on the PK (76.00%).

W1: Johnny Gaudreau (CBJ) | $4,400 DK, $4,900 FD

The Johnny Gaudreau era in Columbus hasn’t gone as promised, but the winger has climbed up to 17 points (5G, 12A) this year. That’s tied for third on the Blue Jackets. Speaking of underwhelming, the Sabres haven’t met their expectations either this year. Specifically, the defense, which is 23rd in goals against per game (3.16). This should be a high-scoring clash between two bad defenses, and I think Gaudreau’s an affordable option to take a chance on.

W2: Anders Lee (NYI) | $4,100 DK, $4,500 FD

The other Isle I’ll play tonight is Anders Lee. The winger has a couple of power-play goals this season, which brings his point total to 10 (7G, 3A) on the year. Despite some recent success over the last few weeks, this Edmonton club is still ranked 27th in goals against per game (3.25). This should be a high-flying showdown tonight, and I think Lee has a great chance to light the lamp.

W3: Matias Maccelli (ARI) | $3,900 DK, $5,100 FD

The Coyotes host the Senators tonight at Mullet Arena, and Ottowa enters this one riding a four-game losing streak. Over the four-game stretch, they’ve been torched for 19 goals (4.75 GAA). I’ll fade their underwhelming backend tonight and play Matias Maccelli as a cheap, depth winger. Maccelli has emerged as the team’s second-leading scorer, racking up 22 points (6G, 16A). I think he’ll do some damage tonight against the 30th-ranked Ottawa defense (3.38 GAA).

D1: Evan Bouchard (EDM) | $6,900 DK, $8,500 FD

The final player from the Oilers/Isles game I want in my lineup is Evan Bouchard. The D-man ranks third on the team in points (8G, 24A), and 16 (4G, 12A) of them have come on the man advantage. Look for this top-tier Edmonton power play (28.42%, fourth) to go to work against the league’s worst PK in New York (70.79%).

D2: Rasmus Dahlin (BUF) | $6,100 DK, $7,500 FD

As mentioned, there should be no shortage of scoring tonight in Buffalo as the Sabres gear up to host the Blue Jackets. Columbus comes into this game ranked 28th defensively, allowing 3.31 goals per contest. I’ll lock in Rasmus Dahlin, who has picked up 25 points (7G, 18A) this year. He runs point on the power play, which hasn’t been great this year but could break out tonight against a subpar Columbs side.

G: Connor Ingram (ARI) | $7,800 DK, $8,300 FD

Connor Ingram is emerging as a top-tier netminder in the NHL this season. The 26-year-old is 12-6-0 with a 2.41 GAA (sixth) and .923 SV% (sixth). He also leads the league with three shutouts, and he’s coming off one against the Sharks on Friday night. I like Ingram to have a big night in net at home, where his GAA dips to 1.96. He’ll take on a middle-of-the-pack Ottawa offense that’s scoring 3.3 goals per night (10th).

UTIL: Jeff Skinner (BUF) | $6,000 DK, $6,700 FD

Building off the Dahlin section, Jeff Skinner also slots in on the Sabres’ top power play. The winger has five power-play goals this season. That brings him up to 22 points (12G, 10A), tied for third on the team. Skinner hasn’t been shy to shoot the puck, as he has amassed a team-high 107 shots on goal. I love Skinner to score at least once tonight.
