We’re halfway through the season so you should have an idea of what kind of fantasy team you have. If you’re at the top of the standings, you’re gearing up for a playoff run. If you’re not, well, then it’s time to start unloading. Luckily, FantasyPros has you covered up until the trade deadline. Not only is there the ‘Who Should I Trade?’ tool where you can get instant feedback but every week in this space, we’ll dig even deeper into players that should be moved.
There will be the classic one-for-one deals but also deals where multiple pieces would equate to one piece which will be indicated with a ‘-plus’ next to the player’s name. Without further ado, below are some possible trades to make as we ramble on with the 2023 season.
Fantasy Football Trade Advice
The Trade: D’Andre Swift (RB – PHI) for Jahmyr Gibbs (RB – DET)
The Reasoning: It’s a battle of one former Detroit Lion running back for a current one. D’Andre Swift, originally cast off the Lions this off-season and traded for a pittance to the Philadelphia Eagles, has bounced back to become a legitimate RB1 in fantasy leagues.
Through nine games this season, Swift has 614 rushing yards and three touchdowns while catching 30 balls for 166 yards and one touchdown. He’s the clear-cut starter in the Eagles’ backfield, even if he loses goalline touches to quarterback Jalen Hurts, and has been one of the better values from fantasy drafts. And while Swift is a fine option down the stretch, Gibbs could be an even better one. He’s missed a few games due to injury but even in six games has 28 receptions for 165 yards, about the same as Swift does in nine games, and has 399 rushing yards but a 5.3 yards-per-carry average on 76 carries compared to Swift’s 4.5 yards-per-carry on 135 carries.
But the reason to pull the trigger now is Gibbs about to take off as a workhorse back. We got a preview of that in Week 8 when Gibbs ran the ball 26 times and caught five passes for an astounding 31 touches or nearly 40% of the Lions’ total offensive plays. Make no mistake that veteran running back David Montgomery will have a place in the pecking order when he returns from injury, but the showcasing of Gibbs wasn’t an accident. The reason the Lions moved Swift was their belief in Gibbs after drafting him 12th overall. And if the Lions, widely considered one of the smarter franchises going right now, chose Gibbs over Swift, maybe you should too.
The Trade: Jerry Jeudy (WR – DEN) for Demario Douglas (WR – NE)
The Reasoning: Jerry Jeudy seems to be perpetually ticketed to break out. Ever since he was drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft and proceeded to total 856 yards his rookie season, the sky was seemingly the limit. But an injury in his sophomore season derailed that, totaling only 467 yards and no touchdowns in 10 games. He bounced back last year, recording 67 receptions for 972 yards in 2022. But we’re back in the dumps again in 2023, with Jeudy, again missing time due to an injury, recording 27 receptions for 336 yards in just seven games.
For Jeudy managers, his usage is the most troubling aspect of this season. He’s played in more than 70% of snaps in just two games this season after being used that much in 11 games last season. For whatever reason, new coach Sean Payton is deferring to veteran receiver Courtland Sutton to be the top snap-getter in Denver this season.
For Demario Douglas, he’s seeing as much usage in his last three games as Jeudy has all season. Thanks to injuries to most of the Patriots’ receiving corps including JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kendrick Bourne, and DeVante Parker, Douglas has been thrown into the fire. He was in on 77% and 83% of the snaps in the last two games respectively and recorded seven targets and five receptions in both. Now with Bourne on injured reserve, Douglas’ spot in the rotation is secured.
We know the role that Jeudy has, but Douglas could be just warming up.
The Trade: Taysom Hill (TE – NO) for Logan Thomas (TE – WAS)
The Reasoning: At first glance, this trade looks like it should be reversed. Taysom Hill, the Swiss Army Knife of the Saints, has been on a tear lately, putting up TE1 numbers for the last month. Whether it’s passing, rushing or receiving, Hill is doing it all. And while he undoubtedly carried fantasy teams to victory over those four weeks, there is doubt that he would be able to consistently provide the same value when it comes to playoff time. How do we know? The highest percentage of snaps Hill has played in any game this season is just 60%. He’s topped 50% just three times this season. Hill has been super efficient, but where is the volume?
Enter Logan Thomas, tight end of the Washington Commanders. While not the sexiest pick at tight end down the stretch, at least we know he’s reliable and will stay on the field. Thomas has played in at least 68% of offensive snaps in every game he’s finished this season (he was knocked out in Week 2 and missed Week 3 altogether). On the season, he has 46 targets, catching 33 of them and turning that into 311 yards and three touchdowns. He’s a fringe TE1 when it comes to fantasy scoring but is someone you can safely plug into lineups.
