Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Davante Adams, CeeDee Lamb, Sam Howell, Zach Charbonnet

Fantasy Football Trade Advice: Davante Adams, CeeDee Lamb, Sam Howell, Zach Charbonnet

We’re halfway through the season so you should have an idea of what kind of fantasy team you have. If you’re at the top of the standings, you’re gearing up for a playoff run. If you’re not, well, it’s time to start unloading. Luckily, FantasyPros has you covered up until the trade deadline. Not only is there the ‘Who Should I Trade?’ tool where you can get instant feedback but every week in this space, we’ll dig even deeper into players that should be moved. There will be the classic one-for-one deals but also deals where multiple pieces would equate to one piece which will be indicated with a ‘-plus’ next to the player’s name. Without further ado, below are some possible trades to make as we ramble on with the 2023 season.

Fantasy Football Trade Advice

The Trade: Sam Howell (QB – WAS) for Geno Smith (QB – SEA)

The Reasoning: Despite some skepticism before the season, Sam Howell has been decent for the Commanders this year. The former fifth-round pick had to fend off Jacoby Brissett for the starting job but did and through eight games, is up to 2,146 yards and 13 touchdowns. Of course, a good chunk of those numbers came in Week 8 when Howell torched the Eagles’ defense for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns. Therein lies the issue – Howell was a low-end QB2 in fantasy scoring until Week 8 when his outburst propelled him to a fringe QB1. Until then, he had only nine touchdowns in seven games but even after, he’s still only on pace for fewer than 30 touchdowns.

This takes us to veteran Geno Smith in Seattle. Geno had a bounce-back year in 2022 after not starting a significant amount of games in seven years. He ended the season with 4,282 yards and exactly 30 touchdowns and even added 366 rushing yards and was a bona fide QB1 in fantasy.

If you need a reliable option, Geno would be the choice. Geno and the Seahawks are in the driver’s seat for a playoff spot and will be playing meaningful football all season. Howell and the Commanders are in the midst of a fire sale with the trade deadline this week so who knows who will even be left. Commanders players and coaches will be in a state of flux the rest of the way which makes Howell extremely unreliable.

The Trade: CeeDee Lamb (WR – DAL) for Davante Adams (WR – LV)-plus

The Reasoning: It’s a new day in Las Vegas…again. Less than two years after bringing in Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, the Raiders fired them both. Vegas will be searching for their third head coach in four seasons with Raiders players essentially auditioning throughout the rest of 2023. Perhaps no Raider has more to prove the rest of the way than receiver Davante Adams. Signed to a huge extension when McDaniels and Ziegler were brought aboard, he had a typical Davante Adams season in his first as a Raider – 100 receptions for over 1,500 yards and eight touchdowns. Then for some reason, like most everything else in Vegas, this season hasn’t quite lived up to expectations for Adams. He’s still a top-15 fantasy receiver but is averaging more than 20 yards less this year, scored just three times, and has just one 100-yard receiving game compared to the eight he had last year. It could be the new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo – himself discarded after the McDaniels news; it could be the addition of Jacoby Meyers; whatever it is, Adams has been suffering.

Yet, there is hope. Rookie Aidan O’Connell will start under center starting this week. In his lone start for the Raiders in Week 4, Adams saw 13 targets and caught eight balls for 75 yards. Adams hasn’t had as good of a game since.

None of this to take away from CeeDee Lamb who has been putting together a career-best season. However, if you can get close to the same production plus another asset, that would diversify your roster and put you in a better position for a championship.

The Trade: Tyjae Spears (RB – TEN) for Zach Charbonnet (RB – SEA)

The Reasoning: It’s a battle of rookie running backs when it comes to the Titans’ Tyjae Spears and Seahawks’ Zach Charbonnet. Drafted in the third and second rounds respectively, Spears and Charbonnet have both carved out small but efficient roles on their offenses.

For Spears, he has the honor of spelling one of the best real (and fantasy) running backs in recent memory. Playing behind Derrick Henry, Spears has looked a little like Henry from an efficiency standpoint. He only has 34 carries halfway through the season but is averaging a blistering 5.8 yards per carry. Spears’ stock was rising this season as it seemed more possible that Henry would be traded. That ship has sailed, however, and Spears will spend at least the rest of this season as a backup.

For Charbonnet, he was a popular pick even before the season. Drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, he was headed to a Seattle team that had already used a second-round pick on a running back last year. That pick was Kenneth Walker III who proceeded to run for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns, so it was curious that Seattle used another second-round pick on Charbonnet. For Charbonnet’s part, despite the lack of playing time, he’s also been very efficient, averaging the same 5.8 yards per carry as Spears.

So why choose one over the other? Charbonnet is part of an offense that is more likely to break up the run game especially considering the draft capital. Tennessee, on the other hand, has used Henry in a workhorse role for years and is more likely to keep it that way now that rookie Will Levis is slated to be the starter. The coaches won’t want to roll with two rookies in the backfield when they can have the future Hall of Famer in Henry guide Levis along. Give the back with the higher draft capital and a better shot at unseating the starter.
